DRAFT 2022 PTP Draft Board / Pats Draft Talk

Those numbers look tantalizing. I think it really depends on our new OC but it feels like BB wants to go back to double TEs after informing our FB that we were eliminating the position and thus had to let him go.

Who knows this might be a case of BB zigs when other teams zag. Everyone drafting WRs early so he takes the best available tight end in Woods instead. I wouldn't hate it if that were the move and our new OC properly utilized dual TE formations.

From what I’ve read about him in draft profiles is he can make plays sideline to sideline. Just needs some coaching but has the athleticism. I’d take a late round flyer on him.
A lot of teams have waaayyyy too many picks for someone not to pick him with a mid-rounder.

What can you tell me about Joey Blount? Great career stats, great testing -- am I just late to the party, or is he way under the radar?

@BaconGrundleCandy
He's been on my radar for a few years but definitely not a name most know unless you're a real geek.

Former QB, multi sport in HS. Dad played at UV. High football IQ. Listen to him talk and he'll do great in interviews. Knew he was an athlete but he made money today. He outperformed what I thought he'd put up so good for him bc again he seems like a good dude. Makes tons of plays from everywhere. Single high, sealing off or knifing through backside, 2hi. Very patient and aggressive in same breath. Fine line and he draws off both well. Like him against bigger targets he's loose and has enough size to play them but I don't always see the athleticism show up on tape tbh. I checked my notes and said as much a few times. "More smooth is fast than straight out explosive." So again it was interesting to see his testing #'s outperformed my expectations a little. His instincts and versatility should be coveted next level though. And he seems like a guy you'll never have to worry about off the field.

+ instincts, versatility (not just a fill in effective from different spots) and isn't afraid to come up in run support along the line. He does a great job baiting and reading QB's eyes deep. I think he's much better eyes forward everything in front of him.

Could clean up some technique. Back pedal is a bit high. Again athleticism is there but not overly explosive like #'s we saw. I know he has enough size but he could add a little muscle and lbs imo. 20 reps on the bench is solid but I'd like to see him really max out to see his potential peak. I mentioned closing speed being inconsistent or I thought I did. His footwork could also be more efficient all around.

Listening to other players and coaches and you can tell he's a leader and we'll liked in that locker room.

might as well post this here too ... from the TE thread in the DF ...

Kolar has been on my short list for top tier TE's for 2-3 years now, for his class. I'm pretty sure him and Ruckert are going top 75. None are ranked just in the neighborhood where I think they belong but Wydemeyer just shot a dud none really expected.

@miloofcroton mentioned him and he is in my tier 3 but Gerrit Prince is a name to remember. Pats went to multiple UAB practices last year. Wright too. He's currently working with Chuck Smith I believe.

You can see Prince's athleticism, agility and rec ability stand out. He's able to work the seam and deep MOF. You can give him touches in the flat and underneath for yac. He's able to stop and start without hesitation at 240. Quick, pretty nimble. Quicker > fast but has enough speed for chunks of yards. He understand his limits and switches up his tempo, strides etc to max out what he has. Big time effort in the run game. He'll never be a "killer" like Mayock would say but he's tough and isn't afraid to contribute. He won't stand a chance against real NFL trench players but he can work over DB's and stalk block down field. If he could improve on his blocking and get a little stronger, a little faster he could be a great flex hybrid. RD 5-udfa depending on your opinion.

A lot of teams have "wayyyy" to many picks? The amount of picks in each draft only changes by a slight few every year. It doesn't really change much if one team has more picks than another team. All teams have needs.

I thought Bill was already zigging with the Power Run attack while others were zagging with the Run 'n Shoot...?

Any relation to Mel?

I've been a fan of Gray and Robertson for a few years especially Gray though. He's got a track background and also plays ST's which might be a bigger need than some think. I wouldn't call him "big" though, 6'/185-190 soaking wet. Just makes the cut-off there.

2nd is too rich imo. Wait to the 3rd, see where guys like Austin, Robinson etc end up. Then you have Phillips & Covey types who might be available later.

I agree though and have been saying as much all last year. This team needs an "easy button" water bug that can get open and win quick. Whether its Austin, Robinson, Phillips or w/e doesn't matter. This group isn't bad but we're missing that quickness in the MOF on those option routes, juke routes etc. That and a true X but either would go a long way.

This is why I said that Meyers really isn't a fit for the Pats offense and I hope that a team puts in a tender offer or that the Pats can trade him.

Meyers does have Mac's trust, which is a good thing, but I'd rather take those targets and give them to Bourne, Henry, Smith, new guys for the slot and X..

The next Cameron McGrone?

Spinal Fusion surgery? Is that the same surgery Gronk had? To say he'll make a "full recovery" is a long shot. So many things could happen. Such as excessive scar tissue. That's not something that surgery and rehab can control.

Is that why they have the draft?

So you're telling me a team like Baltimore that has (2) 3rd rounders and (5) 4th rounders can't take a flyer on Clark earlier in the draft, unlike the Pats? They absolutely can punt on a draft pick for a year. We don't have a shot at this kid in the "later rounds" because other teams have waayyy too many more picks earlier in the draft. That is my point.

Edit: I see about 15 teams with at least 9 picks and 7 teams that have 10 or 11. Some of those teams will not make all those selections. A team like Jax (had a ton of picks last year as well and signed a bunch of FA's this year) and Baltimore do not need a dozen rookies coming in. Though Jax with new coach may want to purge some of the "old guard".

In case people were wondering about Blount.

The "Cons" I saw about Blount (and I value their take with a grain of salt) is from thedraftnetwork.com :
"As a zone defender, Blount’s eyes and instincts are extremely inconsistent and he will often bite on double moves resulting in big plays. He doesn’t have the athleticism to recover when he makes a mistake. Blount takes very poor angles to the football as a run defender and comes in out of control at times, leading to missed tackles. "

I think he's referring more to the fact that Teams like Miami, JAX, KC, GB, Houston and NYJ have 9+ picks in this draft.

EDIT: Added Jax. Removed Miami after reviewing the GBN page.

Not sure if it's worth it for NE to trade up all the way from 21 to 7...but the Giants are open for business

Oh, wow. That’s so ****ty. I mean, it’s great it was found before something terrible happened but talk about an absolute buzzkill for your next journey excitment.

Yes. Add Baltimore and Dallas and Philly (without looking at the list again) as well.

I would love that but doubt they'll do it with the Pats, though our conference and division just got much tougher. Depends on the return I guess. I can name about a dozen players (Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Jax Smith-Njigba, Paris Johnson, Bryan Bresee, Jalen Carter, Kelee Ringo, Myles Murphy, Bijan Robinson, Kayshon Boutte, Eli Ricks, Baby Gronk, Ojulari and my favorite, Will Anderson) off the top of my head in next year's draft that could be studs or at least 1st rounders so not sure if BB would do that trade either. It looks like another deep draft 2023.

Next year's draft is stronger, so I would hold onto the 2023 1st. Who are the pats going to get at 7 anyway? Garrett Wilson? They can get a quality receiver at 21.
