I'm dream of a Julian Edelman (7th rounder) for Nixon... (less QB more WR)
Gunner would be the answer to the wish for an Edelman.

Even if Nixon is another Edelman in 5 years, he is very unlikely to be on the patriots squad. Edelman made the team as a PR, again and again. In that time, he developed into a top WR. That COULD happen to Gunner, but not Nixon, who will be long gone.

I feel that the first 2 rounds should be successful more often than not. That is why is our rage with 2nd round db busts are justified. 3rd and 4th round have lower expectations and so forth. This draft has been better than you can ask for. We are getting rookie of the year performances out of Mac, Barmore, and Stevenson. The rest are a work in progress and I have a good feeling about Perkins.
The thing is, some of them were good picks at the time. In particular Ras-I Dowling definitely had the talent to justify that selection. It's just bad luck that he couldn't stay healthy in the pros. And you can't predict something like Cyrus Jones becoming a complete basket case, either.

That said, I absolutely won't criticize anyone who hated the picks of Tavon Wilson and Jordan Richards, who were both drafted several rounds too early. I also have issues with the trade up for Duke Dawson, which made little sense at the time.

How many times do we need to go down the road of poor drafts in this winning franchise??. every draft has winners and losers as their ability to adapt to the NFL cannot be gauged by viewing tape, talking to their coaches and the combine.

How can we gauge how well Perkins, McGrone, Bledsoe, Sherman or Nixon will play as most have not played a down in the NFL yet?? The jury hasn't even been convened on these 5 players..

It's freaking stupid.

Bill misses on draft picks. Same as the other 31 teams.

Historically they've always picked in the the bottom 1/3rd which makes the odds even longer to draft an impact player

Oh, no. Patsfans lawyers, marketing gurus, HVAC installers, computer nerds, sanitation specialists and finance pros would definitely draft better than BB. Don’t you know that yet? Please keep up. ;)

Group-sourced insight sometimes works. The draft forum usually comes to a good consensus. I think we'd do a credible job. Three contributors per year is my guess.

But we also aren't in the room fielding trade calls and looking at medical reports and going through interviews. It's not an easy decision to make with all the pressure and time limits. I don't think that we'd ultimately do better over a long enough average, and likely far worse.

Ben Watson? Not even close.

We all love Jules, but it’s not happening.
Read my post again. These two will be on the list. I didn't say they are HOFers. They will be one of the approx. 14 players added each year to voting.

Ben Watson is 13th all time in receptions for TEs, top 20 in TDs and Yards. You better believe he will be on the ballot. Anyway you cut it, when you draft a guy who is top 15, top 20, in the 3 most important categories, it's a great pick.

I know what you meant and didn’t misread it. Edelman never made a Pro Bowl or All Pro. He’s only had 1,000 yards 3 times and had 36 total TD’s. Wouldn’t shock me if the voters to get on the list see through his postseason performance as he had many opportunities. It’s hard for him to get consideration when he wasn’t even among the best of his generation.

Watson won’t even get consideration. Never made a Pro Bowl or All Pro. Was never considered the best among his position. He was an average to above average TE.

I think most of this stuff comes from the wacky worlds of Michael Felger, Mark Bertram and a few others who rely on some sort of controversy for the sake of publicity, any publicity will do.

The same thing was said about Duron Harmon.

Ras IR Dowling was a pretty controversial pick at the time due to how many bad injuries he had suffered prior to the draft. Ditto with Dominque Easily. These are one of my most hated picks.

I don't remember Cyrus Jones going nuts. I wasn't ecstatic about the pick, but it worth a shot to see if he turned into the next Devin Hester as Jones was a stud returner in College.

That's true, and I'll own up to being upset about all of the above being picked. They were all very similar situations in how they were generally evaluated pre-draft and how early they were drafted in the end. However, just because the approach worked 1 of 4 times doesn't make the criticism of the 3 misses completely invalid. The insight should come from examining what was different about Harmon.

There are times when 9 out of ten ham and egger draftnicks would have made a better player selection than BB. (See N'Keal Harry, Jordan Richards, Tavon Wilson, Justin Rhorwasser, Lawrence Maroney, etc. ) I'm not hating on BB, but there have been many times where a lesser informed casual fan would have picked a much better player.

It’s a question of probabilities over a long period of time covering many picks. BB wins that against the casual fan every day and twice on Sunday. He’s not alone; many coaches/GMs do. On the other hand, check out Myock in Vegas; nothing special in the last three years despite having earlier picks and being considered the ultimately draft guru, and deservedly so. The draft seems like a crapshoot to me.

Harry was one of those dreaded "draft risers". I heard chatter the night before the draft that Harry was sneaking up boards. Those guys always worry me. While he was projected to be a 1st rounder, I saw most rated him as the 4th or 5th WR to come off of the board. Richards, Wilson and the K were idiotic picks. Maroney was not a "WTF" pick as he was right up there as the 2nd best RB after Bush. Williams and MJD had their red flags and there was a reason they dropped.

In 2010 BB traded up to draft a TE with major injury concerns and skipped over a favorite of many of the "experts" here, Sergio Kindle.

BB and other teams had info, I am sure, of an on-campus incident with Kindle that raised red flags.

How many people here knew of the red flags on Kindle, and were upset that BB drafted Rob Gronkowski?

I understand how invested fans get in their teams' drafts, but I think most of the time it is best to leave the drafting to the experts, and then just ***** about it here.

But then again, BB then followed that pick up by drafting Jermaine Cunningham over Carlos Dunlap.....
