Veteran Starter w/Big Long Term Deal

Interesting situation there... while Collins may be great in this league, it's odd to declare that a rookie is already the "starting Mike LB" before he's even been to a rookie mini-camp. I certainly wouldn't be handing him the job if it means driving out a veteran starter who's only making $2m this year. I let the vet know it's his job to start, and find ways to use both of them. But I'll admit I don't know enough about either player specifically, so perhaps they're working off information I'm not seeing. Either way it's a stark contrast to what's been spoken about here regarding Newton and Jones.

The competition for Outside WR #2/Agholor backup, Swing Tackle, Nose Tackle & Outside CB #3 isn't good enough.

I disagree on your general assessment of our free agent additions at DT, and I'm not sure we're going to be using a traditional nose this year. I also have a higher opinion on Herron than you, but that's certainly not a strong conviction on my part, so another vet OT would be welcome. I guess for Outside CB 3 I'm looking at it a little differently: We have a lot of DB's that can cover a lot of different skill sets. A couple injuries would throw a wrench in that for sure, but that's a hard position to have a TON of quality depth at, simply because of how the market values it. We're in better shape than most teams at outside CB.

You and I agree on the Agholor backup (and both would have liked Byrd back). I guess my general statement was too general, but I do think the fact that the holes we have are all in reserve roles (with the exception of NT, which again, we'll see how much we use) is a good sign in and of itself.

We still need Somebody to back up Agholor, or to play along-side of him in certain situations that require two receivers to threaten the deep sideline...All we have there with any kind of experience is Harry...

Personally, I'm hoping that player is Devin Smith. I would absolutely love to see him turn his career around. However, i understand his history, and I'm not counting on him whatsoever.

It was just exciting to watch him play at Ohio State. He was electric! Those long legs really gave him a 5th wheel only a few players have. He also had some great ball tracking skills. It sucks to see injuries ruin someone's career, but he's stuck around for a long time with teams while working back, which says something on its own. Again, I'd love to see him succeed, It would help the team a lot.

"The Human 9-Route"

Yeah it's too bad what's happened to him since he turned pro...Of the WRs trying to crack the top 5 (Agholor, Bourne, Meyers, Harry & Gunner), he certainly has the strongest pedigree and is exactly the type of outside guy we need to complement Agholor...Good luck & Good health to him...

He's also produced the least of any of them (his career numbers are staggeringly bad), although his 51 yard touchdown with the Cowboys in 2019 shows the kind of deep threat he could pose if he's healthy and motivated.

The Devin Smith story really sparked my curiosity. He's stuck around for almost 4 seasons, had some success sprinkled in, but ultimately got dropped by 2 teams in two years. I've basically watched every video I could of him as a pro and read all the reports and fan opinions I could find.

The conclusion i drew, was that it's a combination of him not being fully healthy and confident, along with just bad luck making tight rosters where he's been pushed off due to more significant team needs at other positions. Teams just couldn't afford the space to let him get fully healthy and his confidence back to 100%.

I think he's become my Binkie, because of all the fringe roster guys, he has the greatest opportunity to help the team fill an important role. Plus who doesn't like a good come-back story?

Experienced Starter w/First Big Contract
Its more like play well against Pats and you're on the list.
NE were expected to add @CB but if they were interested in old vet on a down year they could just kept JMac..
I know it was reported that McCourty signed with the Fins, but it's weird that they haven't released his contract details yet, at least as far as I can find.

McCourty's a couple of years older than Kirkpatrick - last year, he looked like he had hit a bit of a wall. Since I'm guessing that his contract was dirt cheap (particularly since it's not yet released), I'm surprised that he didn't re-sign with New England.
