The fact is the next season for the Superbowl loser has not been kind. It's not only that you now have a target on your back either. It's the playing more than another full month of football. It's the fact you suffered the wear and tear of a TWENTY-ONE game season. You drafted at the bottom of every round. AND you have to live with fact that even though you got to the Superbowl, you ended up just like every other of the 30 other teams who have nothing to show for season, but a nice effort.

Maybe this large roster turnover is a good thing in the end. They have clearly improved areas of weakness in the OL, secondary, and depth. This IS a more talented team that last year, with a lot of that great rookie class showing a 2nd year bump. The current draft class seems to be holding their own, especially the top 4 picks, BUT so has every other team in the league.

Bottom line, the majority of every game in an NFL season is going to be a one score contest. Games like that can often turn on a play or two. We used to say that there will be 5 plays in any game that will determine the outcome, you just never know when these plays will happen. It could be a tipped ball that just happens to fall into a defender's hands, while the next one just hits the turf. A fumble that bounces TO a defender, or to the offense. A referee's call or non-call. And many more of those things that we all put down to LUCK in the game that help determine the winner of a close game.

We had a lot of good bounces last season and there is NO guarantee that this season will see a repeat. Just like there is no guarantee that it won't. The NFL is just THAT competitive. All I DO know is that the team did a decent job improving this team and setting up for another playoff run. Now we just have to see how it plays out.

I agree, the roster refresh/turnover is a good thing.
also, Maye and Campbell need to remove the stain of arguably their worst game of the season.
I expect a great game, in a very difficult environment. I also question if Darnold can replicate last season.
regardless, win or lose, this is a great barometer for what the team is very early on
perhaps a silver lining, they will have a very long week to heal/prep for game 2

Injuries held back the 1997 team as they would've taken the #2 seed from the Steelers and most likely have beaten them again at home in the divisional round.

The 2008 team bounced back to that devastating loss and should've made the playoffs at 11-5.

The 2012 team went back to the AFCCG and would've been back in the Super Bowl if it weren't for the mismanagement of Gronk and Talib's injury.

Pats won in 2018.

Barring major injuries, they should be fine in 2026.

Then again they were champs in 2016 coming off the greatest comeback of all time and got thumped by Alex Smith's Chiefs in the opener.

Funny that Alex Smith has beaten the Patriots comfortably twice but Kermit Mahomes has never done so even against way worse Patriot teams. I guess logically that means Alex Smith > Kermit Mahomes. Can't argue with that.

Terry Glenn missed time as well. They all just couldn't be on the field at the same time. KC looked like the the AFC favorite. Those divisional games Den at KC and NE at Pittsburgh were some of the weirdest playoff games I've seen.

It wasn't that bad. They went 4-5 against teams .500 and above. Had few blowouts against Miami, SD and Pittsburgh though. Close loses to Indy and NYJ. 6 AFC teams had at least 11 wins which is insane.

I had enough of WW after that. They didn't lose the game because of that, but those mistakes just can't happen.

14-3 is really tough to duplicate. I see 5 losses at most. They are going to be a top 2 team in the AFC.

Historically, Super Bowl losers tend to fight to get back and win it, even if it's not always the very next season. Those who don't tend to have fundamental ownership and management issues (like they're dead set against winning).

The Vikings suffered from playing in an inferior conference and being unable to handle the tougher AFC/AFL opponent.

The Bills had the situation reversed, and got out coached by the Giants. But they got there, benefitting from Flutie being exiled to Canada. Ironic that Wilson then committed football suicide like Berry did eleven years earlier, benching Flutie and ruining a promising season.

The Broncos found themselves overmatched, but also got there benefitting from Berry treating Eason like his adopted son.

Barring serious injury, regardless of their regular season record, if the Patriots find themselves in the playoffs again I see them being very determined to return and win the Super Bowl. What happened last February was ugly, frustrating and sickening. Vrabel is able to channel players' anger into focus and productivity. I like our chances to win #7 this year.

Thank you Ian. Personally the Season opener is the perfect recipe for the team to kick of the season.

A team you last saw that beat you and took advantage of the offensive line youth. Since the schedule came out this game is marked. I can bet Vrabel shows clips of the superbowl in team meetings for added motivation.

This game is important and a tone setter for the season. Can't wait!

You're right, but the Patriots under Vrabel seek to meet their own standards, outside of the opponent they're playing or any other circumstances. It is reminiscent of how things were done under Belichick, but the environment around here today is distinctly defined by Mike.

Agree completely, playing 21 games while everyone else played 18 takes a toll.
A major reason why it is so hard to go back to back.
It may come down to have we brought enough new talent to be able to sustain this team once again, we will find out soon.
This is Maye's & receiving corps 2nd season in McDaniels system with that there can be some optimism.
