So look…should he be in? 100% yes.

Did he do it to himself by being an insufferable prick to everyone any chance he got?

Also yes.
Any claim that Bill was "an insufferable prick to everyone every chance he got" is , at best, a ludicrous over generalization and, at worst, an outright lie. In an attempt to be fair to you I'll assume it was former rather than the latter. Bill Belichick learned very early on in Cleveland that many , many media members will **** you over if they get the chance. From then on, if he sensed a media person was playing a "gotcha" game, he refused to play and he didn't hide his disdain for that person. With virtually everyone else, he was civil, cooperative and interesting to listen to. I have a c!ose relative who was on the field for virtually every home game from 2000 to 2020. He's told me that Bill treated everyone in that organization with respect and interestingly he said that the lower you were on the "totem pole", so to speak, the nicer he was to you, i.e. food servers, custodians, office staff, etc. I could go on and on, but I won't. I'll just say this: the" Bill was a prick to everyone" BS is just that - ******** and those who continue to perpetrate that myth are full of it themselves.

I’ll say this: by “everyone” I meant media, peers, and players.

Not support staff. I’m sure Bill was nice to the lunch people and janitors…who isn’t?

How do you explain his treatment of Tom? To the point that Tom said “FU and F this place I’m out”.

I mean that sincerely not snarkily.

I’m guessing the media, some coaches, some players and clearly some of the voters. I can’t think of another reason why he wouldn’t get in first ballot
So you make one up? Can you give any examples?

I don’t care about his personal life, that is his business and it isn’t for me to judge. I do not believe owners are more responsible for the success than a coach and players. Kraft has pissed me off with his treatment of Bill and that hatchet job of that documentary.
I wasn’t happy that Brady left like that but there is more to the story than we know. And Kraft willingly let Brady go but it seems Bill gets more of the hate than old Bob !!!
Anyway , keeping him out of the HOF is pathetic and childish and vindictive!!!
We know why Bill gets more blame for that. Brady himself has outright confirmed that friction between him and Bill led to the split. If you want to blame Kraft, it's because he sided with Bill in that matter and gave his coach leeway. We can do this all day, but there's a reason Kraft and Brady are very tight and why almost everything from Brady's camp was that him, his family, and the people around him were not happy with how Bill was treating him at the end.

We all have different opinions on this.
We all agree that he 10000000% should be a first ballot HOFer.
But to say he isn't partially responsible for all the hate towards him is just wrong.
For what?

For not feeding media frenzies?

How do you think Vrabel is going to be when he has a bad season and starts hearing the hyenas?

I don’t know why these specific voters didn’t vote for him. Could be they had a grudge, overweighted Spy Gate, think he has made a fool of himself.

But the fact is that he has behaved like a douche bag for much of his career. It was cute to us for a long time because it was constant winning. Bill didn’t need to be that way.

He should absolutely 100% still be in. But he made more than a few enemies and that’s probably why he isn’t first ballot.
It's pretty evident that the things that sustained the most incredible period of success in NFL history are not recognized by a lot of fans.

No one else has sustained that success.

What exactly did he do that made him a douche bag?

And don't say his disdain for the media, because that's something that only people in the Boston area who listen to douchebag radio care about. I promise you in other parts of the country, radio hosts don't go out of their way to be masshole-like.

Belichick frequently treated media with disdain, unprovoked a lot of the time. He would be a **** about answering simple questions. It wasn’t just the “gotcha” types.

I agree he wasn’t a prick to everyone, obviously. A lot of people, especially coaches and players seem to like him. But he was enough of a prick overall to make some people hate him. And that’s why he isn’t a first ballot.

So you make one up? Can you give any examples?
I mean just asking chatgpt to consolidate examples using quotes

Bill Simmons (ESPN / The Ringer)

What he said (multiple times on podcasts & columns):

  • Referred to Belichick as “a miserable prick” and “the least fun great coach in sports history.”
  • Frequently mocked his press conferences as “a waste of everyone’s time” and said Belichick “treats the media like enemies instead of adults doing their jobs.”
  • During Deflategate, Simmons said Belichick’s silence and evasiveness “made everything worse” and “screamed arrogance.”

Dan Shaughnessy (Boston Globe)

What he said:

  • Called Belichick “contemptuous of the press” and “hostile by design.”
  • Wrote that Belichick “goes out of his way to belittle reporters” and treats media sessions as “an annoyance rather than a responsibility.”
  • During Deflategate, said Belichick’s approach was “smug, evasive, and self-serving.”

Mike Florio (ProFootballTalk)

What he said:

  • Said Belichick “uses the media when it suits him and stonewalls when accountability is required.”
  • Called his press conferences “performative non-answers” meant to “assert dominance rather than inform.”
  • During league controversies, Florio said Belichick’s media posture “invites suspicion” and “creates distrust.”

Jason Whitlock (Fox Sports / later OutKick)

What he said:

  • Called Belichick “arrogant and condescending” toward the press.
  • Said his media demeanor showed “a man who believes he’s above explanation.”
  • Claimed Belichick “weaponized silence” to control narratives.

Jemele Hill (ESPN)

What she said:

  • During Deflategate coverage, criticized Belichick’s refusal to engage substantively, saying his posture “felt insulting to the intelligence of the audience.”
  • Said the Patriots’ leadership “acted like the rules didn’t apply to them.”

LOCAL / REGIONAL MEDIA (NOT JUST FELGER & MAZZ)

Michael Holley (Boston / NBC Sports Boston)

What he said:

  • Said Belichick “doesn’t respect the media process” and “has no interest in mutual professionalism.”
  • Described Patriots press conferences as “rituals designed to assert control, not communicate.”

Kirk Minihane (WEEI, former Globe columnist)

What he said:

  • Called Belichick “a bully in press conferences.”
  • Said he “embarrasses reporters intentionally” and “gets off on shutting people down.”

Tom Curran (NBC Sports Boston)

  • Said Belichick “creates an adversarial environment with the media that is entirely of his own making.”
  • Noted that players often had to “clean up the messaging mess afterward.”

FORMER PLAYERS TURNED MEDIA (PATRIOTS ERA CONTEXT)

Rodney Harrison (NBC)

What he said:

  • Acknowledged Belichick was brilliant but said “the way he treats the media rubs people the wrong way — and he doesn’t care.”
  • Said players knew “press conferences weren’t about answers, they were about control.”

Willie McGinest

What he said:

  • Defended Belichick’s right to be private, but admitted “he doesn’t make it easy for the media, and he knows it.”

Andrew Perloff (The Maggie & Perloff Show, Sirius XM)

  • Labeled Belichick a “hypocrite” — saying someone who “openly mocked the media for two decades” shouldn’t be hired as a media analyst now.

What he said:

“Someone who… mocked the media for two decades… shouldn’t be able to walk right in and get multiple media jobs.”

Ryan Clark (Commentator and Former NFL Player)

  • Implied contradictions between Belichick’s strictness as a coach and his behavior now in media, calling him a hypocrite for timing and demeanor.

__________

I mean let's be real. He developed a reputation. This isn't shocking. The media dislikes him. The media is mostly who votes on these sort of things. They've been using his UNC run to get their pound of flesh, this is just more of it.

I always planned on visiting Canton someday.

**** it
It's a dirty disgusting place. We used to drive 3 hours from Buffalo down there regularly because they have 10 turf soccer fields surrounding the complex so that's where midwest premier soccer teams congregated from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Western PA and Western NY. The whole place is pretty shabby.

How do you explain Tom's treatment of Bill? How about shoving Guerrero (aka Dr. Quack) down Bill's throat (a metaphor) or openly playing footsie with the Dolphins while still under contract with the Patriots? Oh, and with all due respect, if you have to ask "who isn't" nice to those workers on the lower rungs in organizations, I really y don't know what to tell you...

There's only one guy on this list above who is ranked first or second in every category.

He won 31 playoff games, the next closest won 9.

Dumb.
