Re: Should they give Culpepper,Holcomb,Rattay or Weinke a call?
I agree. In a way BB hasn't done himself any favors playing Brady as much as he has in blowouts and late season games. Cassel could have really used those reps. He always seems to come off the bench tight but he tends to settle in as the game progresses. Although I firmly believe that this season the OLine is making it hard to get any kind of rhythm going on offense.
I also think that the fact that we play it differently in the preseason than most teams - situations, personnel groupings, etc. trumps an organized effort to win - something I see a lot more from in the competition. Many of whom will never look as good again as they did in pre season because they weren't working on things that will matter down the road and they end up building a false sense of accomplishment that leaves all the talking heads scratching their heads as to what went wrong... 'cause they looked so good in preseason. Not to say BB isn't concerned about execution, 'cause he better be.
We've just got too many starters unavailable early on. 2/5ths of the starting OL, this was the first preseason game for Moss and Welker (who apparently does not rust ), Morris looked like a guy who hadn't played in almost a year, Rodney and AD out, Hobbs working his way back off PUP, Brady still not taking a snap against an opponent (although he took all the practice snaps this week which does impact the #2).
The highlight of the evening was when they flashed that early schedule, though...
For those who think O'Connell is ready to be a backup all I can say is they have no clue what they are watching. Forget the pick, he was falling apart down the stretch as do most rookies making poor decision after poor decision - just lucked out in that none of them resulted in turnovers. He is definitely "developmental". I love how some here call for the OC to make use of his running more - they have no clue what he's supposed to be doing, that running is a last resort that the more athletic kids fall victim to when the going gets tough and it's something Bill actually cringes at. Cassel can run to, he just knows that isn't what they want him to do. His job is to try and run this offense - and thank god he's doing it as I don't want to see Tommy on the field until the OLine gets it's **** together or it's starters back and the rust knocked off the RB's.
Will be interesting to see if Gutz is already being prepped for the PS. He looked aweful against third stringers last week, got hurt and missed most of practice this week, and then while they took him on the trip he doesn't see a snap. It seems as if he is feeling the pressure of drafting O'Connell far more than Cassel is feeling the pressure of "the team" supposedly really liking Gutz. I'm sure they appreciate he's an effort guy, but that effort does not seem to have translated into progression for him this season. Cassel may not be developing a Schaub like buzz, but neither is anyone beneath him on the depth chart.
I think it's too late for a veteran backup, let alone anything from 64's list. And Griese won't be going anywhere and I doubt there are too many Simms supporters left after tonight. The call for Joey Harrington made me laugh - reality for Dimitrof is he has no alternative lest he ruin Ryan.
That was my take, too. It looks as if he really needs to get a full game of work in if they're going to keep him at #2. I stated in the game thread that they should have him play the whole 4th game if they keep him as the #2, so he can settle into better habits.
