Clayton: Moss not close to deal, entertaining other offers

I hope your saying that when CJ Jones could be our number 3 wr, and tom brady feels like crap again ..

Please stop! I don't usually get annoyed with posters, but your constant pessimism has started to get extremely old. Yes they have holes, and some of those holes are substantial at the moment, but we're just over 24 hours into free agency! They have $24M in cap space, Randy's still on the market (so they could still resign him), and they would still have enough money left over to sign other players. They've also got the 7th overall pick, along with 3 other picks in the first three rounds, and 8 picks total. This years draft actually happens to be strong at some of their current areas of weakness.

So, I kindly ask you to either tone the pessimism down a notch, or find another thread to post your constantly misguided complaints. Thank you!

Re: Latest on Moss from Clayton...

Oh, please.... you whine about everything, as the game threads of a 16-0 regular season can attest to. You're the kind of person who would hit a $300 million jackpot and then spend the next 20 years of your life complaining about the taxes you had to pay on it.

Did we win the super bowl??? NO you nimbus.. That was the goal, no we will be weaker... I know moss still could still sign, but when Shefeter says that its not a synch , you have to worry.. Im sure Tom Brady is jumpin for joy in Costa rica...

OK, since everyone is in a panic, I've been holding this one in for awhile.

What in the world was Randy doing leaving the huddle on the second to last play of the Super Bowl???

3rd down and he leaves the huddle before Brady even gives the play??!

Brady yelled at him to get into the huddle, and Light had to grab him and pull him back.

The most important play of the year, and he pulls that?

Randy is fantastic, he's great, I want him on my team, but--to compare him-- Manny has never acted like Manny during the most crucial part of the World Series.

In fact Ive been postive with the Moss thing, and I still think it could get done.. But why is it taken so long??? This should have been offseason priority number 1.. Oh yeah I forgot we could just plug anyone in the slots.. like reche caldwell and doug gabrial... I forgot how those worked out.. 1 was cut in dec, the other dropped 2 passes in the afc title game.. Brady was pissed when we lost Deion Branch , David Givens, and Andre Davis.. I hate to see him when we lose, Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth, and or Jabar Gaffney..

Im as positvie as the next guy, but someone want to tell me why Moss is looking at Teams like the Panthers...???

14 mil under the cap, and you can justify losing Samual Moss, and others to our draft in april..??? how many draft picks are on roster going into 2008?? I will give you 2 right now if you want to count Wes Welker... Brady needs Moss, nuff said..

Quit acting like a 2 year old.

Quit actiing like a homer and open your eyes. Ive been with you the last couple of weeks, but its been tough now..

If the FO betrays his trust again by ditching talent that works well with him and he adamantly wants to keep, he's going to work to secure a contract from the highest bidder and say to hell with the Patriots.

well then...that's HIS prerogative.

this current ownership and staff have brought three Super Bowls , a fourth appearance and six AFC East championships to the fans. Kraft just upped the already pricey ticket structure 50% in some cases...there is a 5 million year long waiting line for season's tickets(exaggeration, OK?). Fans are lining up to throw money at the Patriots organization and all its ancillary arms. Vetch and moan and gripe all you want BUT so far, for seven years the model has WORKED despite ANY OF YOUR PROTESTATIONS.

So, it certainly seems like the Patriots will continue to do what they do businesswise until the season comes that it doesn't work anymore, and there isn't anything your mewlings and bleatings about your favorite players going elsewhere is going to do about it. So go ahead, keep beating your breasts and pounding your heads against the wall and making idle threats about what you are going to do if they don't do what YOU want them to. It's all completely meaningless as things stand today.

Myself, I went through this excruciating period of doubts and questions in 2000 and 2001...then I just let go and began living by the credo, In Belichick I Trust. So far, I'm not sitting through 1-15 seasons watching Patriots teams with a superstar LB and a Hall of Fame cornerback and 51 scrubs and busts, and listening to the company line about how fortunate I am to see Hog Hannah play the offensive line.I'm not sitting on metal bleacher benches in lightning storms and getting soaked in urine when I go to the men's room, like it used to be in the "good old days".

Life is change...and certainly the Patriots are not immune...but I think I'm gonna stick it out and see how far this run goes....now the rest of you depressed and disillusioned "fans" should really think about finding another team that better suits your needs for immediate gratification and hero worship...like, say, Dallas. You'll feel better and so will the rest of us loyal Patriot fans who root for the laundry, not the player.

You're right. Moss will not have the same season he had this year next year. No way. I think the Pats might know that. The league is going to start where it left off. Shutting down Randy. If he does come back I will bet he doesnt have 15 td's next year.

I agree we won with less , and did not win the super bowl with more.. but you got a guy that is in his prime of his carrer, and you got a WR and QB combo that could make any other combo look silly the next 4 yrs.. You going to tell me that CJ Jones and Chad Jackson will step up??? I dont think so..

Who is the front office going to sign with that 17 million, dont want to sound like Felger, but you have to wonder who, if and I want to say a big IF , Moss leaves.. That is alot of money to toss around to Clark Haggins..

Please... This team hasn't lost any players to free agency that it wasn't expected to, and you're crying like a little sissy.

What's "a fact"? That they currently have holes? Seriously, DUH!

It's also a fact that they have around $24M in cap space, we're only 24 hours plus into free agency, and we have yet to see this process to it's conclusion. So, you haven't a clue as to what holes they'll actually need to fill via the draft. Also, the Patriots have had a number of rookies contribute (Hobbs, Wilson, Mankins, Maroney, Seymour, Wilfork, and so on and so fourth). It's funny how people have been b*tching that the Patriots need to go younger, and now that it seems it might be a possibility (we have yet to see what free agency will hold for them), people are acting like the season is dead before it's even an infant.

I'm just saying to chill a little with all the complaints, and constant pessimism, especially since you don't actually know anything, yet.

Tell me how this team is better now oh great one.. I will give you Samual , and that no one thought we would sign him.. What if we lose Moss , Stallworth, Gay ,Colvin, and replace them with Draft picks would you be happy then.. I dont think Tom Brady would think so..

The Pats needed to get younger at LB, you mean to tell me David Harris would not have been a good addition to this team right now?? No I dont know anything yet, but Adam Shefter does, and when he speaks I take seriously.. Ive been the guy saying when Clayton talks, its not worth a grain of salt..

Tell me if , and again .. IF WE LOSE MOSS, NOT WHEN, What do we spend the so called 24 mill in cap space, and dont tell me Ty Law..

If you say a trade for Chad Johnson and Lito Sheppard, I will say ok, but this is not a great Free agency class... yes its day 1 and Moss still could sign, but If Im Brady , I stood back once , I wont stand aside again.. And if the FO wants to allinate Brady, I would like to hear someone defend that

Trade for Lito, Johnson, Huff, sign Law.

Chad replaces Moss.
Lito replaces Samuel.
Law replaces Gay.
Huff gets in the mix and when Harrison retires, Huff and Meriweather are your Safeties.

14 mil under the cap

First, do we actually know that Moss is actually looking at signing with the Panthers, or that some reporter just claims the Panthers are interested?

Second, the Patriots are $23-24M under the cap, after they released Kyle Brady. Miguels numbers are wrong, as they came from a misguided NFLNetwork report. Before the Patriots released Kyle Brady J. Kraft personally said the team was almost $22M under the cap, which made complete sense considering the numbers that had previously been posted on NFL.com ($17.4M prior to their release of Colvin, which added $5.8M worth of cap space, and brought them up to $23.2M, then they signed Bruschi and Washington, and went slightly under $22M).

OK with what number 1 draft picks will this work??

1.) Let's try this again.....

THEY HAVEN'T LOST ANYONE PEOPLE DIDN'T EXPECT THEM TO AS OF NOW

There, I feel better. Maybe that will sink in one of these days.

2.) Stallworth, while being a home run threat, was being phased out of the offense for reasons I don't begin to fathom, although the story about him being an absolutely horrendous route runner would certainly have explained it. However, his loss won't leave me crying in my oatmeal. There are going to be receivers available.

3.) Gay, while being fine as a nickel, was nothing but a nickel corner for this team, and was often injured. I want him back, but if he moves on, I'm confident that the team will be able to put someone else in the nickel spot. It's the #1/#2 CB spot vacated by Samuel that's the problem.

4.) I've made it clear that I don't know what the hell the team was thinking when it cut Colvin. I've said that it looks awful in a vacuum, and put forth the 'pet' theory that they've lost their minds following the SB loss. However, I understand that Belioli are the best in the business at putting a team together, and they know their personnel far better than either you or I.

5.) Losing Moss would suck. It would require a hunt for a top flight receiver, or two lesser receivers to mitigate the damage. And, as in the case with Stallworth, there are going to be receivers available.

6.) I have no problem with replacing Stallworth and Gay with draft picks, although I don't think the team will waste a high slot on a receiver. Unlike you, I'm able to understand that a momentary setback ≠ complete disaster. That's why I wasn't crying in almost every game thread in the second half of the season.

OK..the FO alienated Drew Bledsoe and fans like you went beserk then...how'd that work out? You're problem is you see everything in terms of individual players...that's great for fantasy league play, but the NFL is all about the TEAM...something the Patriots have been better at than any other franchise since 2001.

You realize you are talking about Tom Brady right? that is a moronic comment. Tom brady is #1 or #2 all time among QBs ever. You think the pats can win with cassel??
