Will Campbell Watch

Dan Kelley is talking the **** of someone who clearly hasn't been watching Campbell all year long.

Campbell was off his game last night, making the kind of mistakes we haven't seen him typically make this season whether because of the MCL issues, flu issues, or even playoff heebie-jeebies or a combination of these.

He sucked last night. Not exactly the day to parade around bleh’ing. I like the kid but whether it was not being 100% or short arms it doesn’t matter. He (and Wilson) just didn’t have it last night and it definitely helped throw things off.

Complete overreaction. KCSEVEN has it right. He clearly went through the game play by play and broke it down.

I used to tape the games and then rewatch them as I rode my stationary bike at home, and the most striking thing to me when I did that was just how far off the in game narrative was from the actual play when you focused on one unit or player, especially the offensive line. What people thought happened was as far from reality as it gets.

Dan Kelley is the same moron who said Drake Maye sucked and would be a horrible QB in the pro's. He's a ****ing idiot.

the pressure is only going to get amplified vs Houston. They need to give him help. Run the ball more. And perhaps go back to Ben Brown at LG as Wilson struggling didn't help either.

Lets not forget Campbell is coming off a pretty bad knee injury and undoubtedly is not as strong as he was prior to the injury. Not sure how much leg work he could have done while he was out injured.

Realize that Dan Kelley is so intellectually challenged that he said that Drake Maye would never make it to his second contract, and that they should have kept Joe Milton and traded Drake Maye. Come to think of it that was the same sentiment the quitters expressed.

then he shouldn't be out there. LT is a critical position.

Gotta be honest, I was thinking they'd bench the 2 rookies midway thru the 2nd half. They just didn't look ready from their layoffs. Lowe and Brown have played well, and Lowe especially doesn't get beaten though his run blocking isn't great. It'll be under consideration this week.

He sucked last night. Shouldn't be any denying that. He had a terrific rookie year and looks like a very good player overall but he had a bad game. The bad game does not invalidate that and between injury/illness nothing wrong with writing it off as nothing to worry about big picture, but don't deny it was a bad showing. I get that he was a controversial pick in some ways here so there's the urge to defend him when the vultures circle after a bad game, but lying to people's face and trying to pretend like he didn't play poorly when he did only makes you look like you've lost objectivity about him and casts doubt on anything you say.

Worst game of his career quite easily from what I saw

Lmao. Some things never change.

Disappointing, but we also need to remember that Kalil Mack is very tough to block. Lowe would have been worse. We needed to give him more help, with a TE for instance.

True Lowe probably would have fell flat on his backside.

Will Campbell it's going to be pick your poison do you want a league average LT or a potentially elite guard.

I don't think he'll ever be horrible at LT but i just don't see how he could ever be an elite tackle with his physical limitations when i could see it at guard he's built like a guard, i think if you think Campbell can be a game changer at guard you should put him at guard and get a left tackle and turn that left side weakness we just saw into a strength.

But they gotta figure things out because there are some killer rushers in the playoffs.
I agree. The left side of the line could sink the ship. It is that important.

That is to me the biggest question. It’s why I might consider shutting him down for now.

It is possible that 100% Lowe > 75% Campbell at the moment.

Before he was injured he was already much better than a "league average LT". With experience and the weight room he will get better.
No doubt. But that’s future, and during the playoffs we can’t afford to wait.

It’s the playoffs, win or go home. Nobody can afford to be off their game for even one night. Veterans know they have to be honest about how much injuries etc. are going to affect them. Rookies haven’t yet experienced that.

Had to check the timestamp on this post to make sure it wasn't a pre draft take.

He already played as an above average LT this year from what I saw. So limiting him to less than he played this year like you did n your first paragraph doesn't make sense to me. Now, he'd hardly be the first player to regress after there's more tape of him so it's not like that's locked in stone. But it'd an odd take to be making at this point that he can only be league average at LT when so far he's been better.

in your second paragraph you moved the goal posts to questioning if he can be elite at LT. That's a more valid concern and one I share. But moving him to guard just because he's not elite at LT has one key variable you left out... where are we getting that elite LT? Or even just an above average one to match how WC himself played this year. Those guys rarely make it to FA and our days of picking high in the draft are hopefully over.

Also this idea that he'll automatically be some all pro LG is overstated. Maybe he has the body type/athleticism for it but you're also asking him to play a new position he's never done before. His stance has to change. The angles he blocks at would be different. It's a whole new position. I get that LG is easier than LT overall, but it's not like every failed OT pick kicks inside and plays well at Guard. That's not automatic.

I'm not opposed to the idea of him eventually playing guard if the roster works that way. Maybe we end up with a 2nd or 3rd round pick who's clearly a stud LT and Campbell takes well to the position change and we can from good to dominant. I'll never turn that down. But nothing about how WC played this year looked to me like it's something we should be pushing for.
