NFL Trade Deadline Discourse

Take it FWIW. He is kinda redundant with Barmore and Williams. Not sure where he would fit in. Would love to have a player the caliber of Simmons, but I don't know why they would do this. If he was an edge rusher, I would be all in.

Pass..

Let's get a good FS or rotational edge player
But possibly we already gone one by signing the guy on waivers from chargers.

They replaced 4/5 of the starting OL, and they went after a number of interior OL who decided to take other deals. That's about as much as you can do on one unit in an offseason. They will continue to address it this coming offseason through both the draft and free agency. They had one of the best offseasons you can put together, but you can't fix the worst roster in football in one offseason.

You don't think its possible to fix a roster in one season? What league have you been watching for the past 30 years? Before free agency began in 1994, I would have agreed with you but ever since free agency began plenty of teams have in fact fixed bad rosters in one season, including our very own New England Patriots in 2001. This is a league where at least one team has improved from worst to first virtually every season since free agency began.

As you already mentioned we've already replaced 4/5 of the starting OL from last year. Why would it be so unreasonable to plug the remaining leak. If there is a reliable OG in the last year of his contract that a team is willing to let go of, we DEFINATELY need to talk to that team before the trade deadline? Wilson isn't playing well. He only had one year of starting experience in college and simply isn't ready to be a starting OG on a team with Super Bowl aspirations. He's the weak link on this team. Plug that hole and this team become a Super Bowl contender right now.

No, but there are cries to bench him for Ben Brown, or to trade for a veteran LG. That's more than pointing out growing pains for a rookie transition to a new position in his first 7 games.
I didn't see those cries. I imagine it is a tough assignment, and the opposing DL is not going to be nice to Wilson, just the opposite.

It might not be a bad thing to let Wilson sit a bit and let Ben Brown play. Sometimes if a guy clears his head it helps. I know the cries are probably not thinking that way, but there are different ways to handle various situations.

Jake Andrews, Michael Jackson, and Cole Strange are all starting across the NFL. Maybe they are not having the greatest success, but they are starting so Ben Brown can not be bad if he beat them out. Brown was OK in the one game he played.

Ben Brown is a JAG. A decent enough backup, but NOT starting material.

If you didn't see those cries, you haven't been reading this thread.

The only way Wilson will develop is to get him more experience. You don't give up after 7 games.

I think people are being way too hard on Jared Wilson. He will be fine (though the Cleveland game may be rough).
I don't think anyone wants to give up on Wilson. We're all hoping he has a bright future as our starting center. Its just that he's very inexperienced and isn't ready to be the starting OG on a team with Super Bowl aspirations. If there is any opportunity to upgrade that position before the trade deadline, we should explore it. Wilson will then become valuable depth and backup all three interior line positions. We're not giving up on him. We just need more production from that position. We're going to need to be able to run the ball when the weather turns.

That sounds ridiculous to me.

This is a young team at the beginning of what looks like a long-term window. People are acting like this is 2018, and we need to squeeze out 1 more SB.

Wilson will be a 10 year starter, whether at LG or C. Give him time to develop. Come January, he will not be the player that prevents us from advancing.

The 2001 team started 5-5, and won a SB with Mike Compton at LG.

Captain Stoned is discussing trading away valuable draft capital for Kevin Zeitler, a guy drafted 2 picks after Dont'a Hightower. Maybe better than Jared Wilson right now, but on his last legs. Not part of any lobg-term plan.

Stick to the plan and develop the players.

With a 5-2 team, the angst over Henderson, Williams, and Wilson is ridiculous.

Also, the OL needs contuity. We have good OL coaches. IMHO the worst thing we could do would be to disrupt the continuity.

Finally, Wilson was out injured earlier this season, he may not be 100%.

Devin was really good, not great. He exemplified “do your job.” Not be great at your job. I don’t think he makes the hall. Earl Thomas has a good case. But the NFL has been void of high quality, free safeties for a long time. Ed reeds don’t grow on trees. Looking at the lineup, if you could get a sure thing blue chip player at FS, you take him without hesitation. Probably the rarest position to find sure thing HOF like players. I think Caleb downs is the best prospect since Malik hooker. And even that didn’t go as planned. It takes elite brains and elite athleticism mixed with a little psycho to be elite at the free safety position.
3X 2nd team all pro (2010, 2013, 2016). I'd be stunned if he made the HOF.
He wasn't a big play guy, but he seemed to not allow many big plays over the top. This is probably why he won't make the HOF because of the lack of stats. However, he was pretty dangerous when he got the ball in his hands from an INT. He was underrated in the area.
100%. Let's not forget he made the pro-bowl and had 6 ints as a CB his rookie year.
Absolutely correct. He looked the part his rookie season. Something went wrong the next season where he wasn't playing with the same technique as a rookie in 2010.
He played zone his rookie season. Although he had 6 INT's, he showing cracks in coverage where he finally got exposed in the divisional round against the Jets. Braylen Edwards bullied him and welcomed him to the NFL. From 2011 to 2012 is when a change needed to be made as he was routinely getting roasted in man coverage and giving up yards at a historic rate. Had Chung not gotten injured, Bill may have given up on him and cut/trade him the following season like Wheatley, Wilhite and Butler before him. McCourty had said he was pretty pissed when Bill forced him at FS. Tebucky Jones was in a similar situation. He was awful at CB, but had decent success at FS and scored a nice contract in New Orleans. Malcolm Jenkins is another guy that couldn't play CB, but transitioning to FS saved his career.
Man I loved Ed Reed, what a phucking player he was.
Could you imagine if Bill pulled the trigger on Ed Reed in 2002 over Daniel Graham? I remember Ed Reed was the talk that year as he was a boom/bust player. He was elite from day 1.

What I said was that it's not possible to fully fix the worst roster in football in one offseason, and I stand by that. This is a multi year process, not a quick fix of an already good team.

Good points. I believe we went to a 4-3, man coverage in 2011.. I remember talking about it during training camp that year.. that Jets game.. it's a prototype of being division opponent and the Jets had the horsepower on defense to deal with our offense.. flooded the zones and made Brady throw outside the numbers.. 14-2 season wasted IMO.

Mcourty best part of his career was being moved to S. He fit perfectly due to his CB skills and instincts.. Chung was SS playing out of position his first go round..

Boy we would have had at least a decade of ed reed highlights in NE.. Reed would have had at least 4 rings.. had he been drafted here... there are other examples through the league where CBs transition over to S and they become better players.

Steve! Why are you doing this to me.. a defensive front of Williams, Barmore, Tonga, Simmons!!!!

What is Tennessee asking for Zeitler? What’s his cap hit for us? How many years left on his contract?

Don't know what they're asking for him, though I would ass-ume that whatever the cap ramifications are for a one-year, $9M contract, we should be able to absorb it easily.

I get it cap.. Henderson and Williams are talented players with speed. I feel like maybe we expected based on small sample sizes in camp/pre-season that they would have immediate impacts. I believe they both will end up becoming factors down the stretch here.

I hope so; because I've seen the other movie too many times...

That's not the point.

Do I feel that Wilson will eventually become a starting-level talent at either LG or Center? Yeah probably. But the dude left college WAY too inexperienced, including at the position he's currently playing. And as of right now, he's the Weakest Link on the OL; so what's wrong with trying to strengthen your weakest link, anywhere?

Also, the OL needs contuity. We have good OL coaches. IMHO the worst thing we could do would be to disrupt the continuity.

Finally, Wilson was out injured earlier this season, he may not be 100%.

Even more reason to sit him.

I have not one time mentioned trade terms... But to not even consider the possibility of replacing Wilson in the starting lineup, at Any price, is ****ing moronic. Kyle Williams isn't seeing many snaps, so what about his "development"? Or Farmer's at DT?
