Vrabel tells it like it is about the Pats drafting

My problems with this explanation:

First it sends a terrible message to the lockeroom.

But more than that we need way more than depth out of those first rounders. If we passed up on Micah and all we get for our patience is some depth multiple years from now then that's not good.

They had a chance at a generational talent and instead chose to sit on the draft picks so the pressure is on to get something better with them and not just depth. I'll be pleasantly surprised if we do better than Micah.

I call BS This wasn't about picks. This was about money.

Among professional sports teams there is often a "win now at all costs" philosophy - perhaps because the coach figures he'll get fired otherwise. That creates an economic opportunity, as some teams will give up great value in future draft picks for an asset today. In economic terms, they are using a very high discount rate. The Tampa Bay Rays have made a good living taking advantage of this - they give up their star players for a great future return. (Pisses-off their fans though).

Vrabel realizes full well that this team is still a long way from being a contender - it makes zero sense to give up future draft picks to win perhaps a couple more games this year.

Building depth isn’t only about drafting or spending money on players. In fact I think it’s more about having coaches who are good teachers.

I’m hopeful that they have much better teachers now than they’ve had for quite some time, in particular for the QB, WR, and OL groups.

The 2024 Draft is Drake Make short of being the Worst Draft in NFL History. We got one Good player from that Draft: and we were Drafting Fourth overall.

The 2022 and 2024 Drafts set this Franchise back some.

I think Vrabel’s got it all right. This is a multi year project where long term goals are the priority. You build the core of your team through the draft, and use free agency to address the things you couldn’t address in the draft.

Drake needs to be lights out or that 2024 draft WILL be the worst in NFL history.

I don’t see Wolf here beyond this year unless he takes a demotion to scouting dir.

It was that bad.

Especially so if rumors are true that Vrabel, Stretch, and Cowden ran this year’s draft.

So let's wait until '26 & '27 to do something about it. And just assume we can find something like Micah out of either of those picks.

I don't' think that's rumor; look at the projected Starters... T-Rex Campbell - J Wilson maybe C Woodson. Guy who will get playing time Henderson - Kyle Williams and the Kicker. We can guess Wolf had no part in that.

If the players were placed in tiers of where they had to be drafted, and we had to abide by these tiers, I am confident everyone on this site could do better than Wolf did.

Even if the organization was bad last year, that doesn’t force you to choose players who can’t play.

We have no other choice: I don't think we are ready to bump the Chiefs off just yet. Micah would have cost us a lot of capital: we don't have that to burn. Losing out on Hunter and Carter sucked: we could have opted to Trade if we had the chance and stockpile draft capital. IF I Never see MAyo again it would be too soon.

You left out Ashby, Farmer and Bryant.

And then there are UDFAs like Chism and Ponder, and it would have included Larison and Lampe if they were not injured.

Yeah that's how you build a Team and depth.

Here’s where Bill needs to look to make sure it doesn’t get ugly…

Duke.

If UNC loses to Duke in football they will run him out of town .

He can and will lose to Clemson, and probably Wake Forest.

He can’t lose to Duke AND have all the weird personal stuff going on.
You posted in wrong thread.

I think what Vrab was saying is to create the kind of culture and sustainability you want year in and year out. You draft guys, develop guys pay/ reward your own guys. It’s not a great message to a team trying to build a culture to give up the farm for Micah Parsons.

He’s a celebrity and comes in and is instantly the focal point and face of for organization, this is going to cause some discontent and lack of trust with guys who’s been here putting in the work.

You are also giving up two first round picks and a pro bowl caliber player or a third high pick that should be a cap controlled player for at least 4 years that allows you to get better, younger and keep the cap at a comfortable level where you keep paying your own guys.

I think the model franchise for this is the Baltimore Ravens.

Now I know they haven’t won a championship in a while but they are always respected and a tough in a league trying to be build around parity.

everyone with an eye on paying Maye, rightfully so (hopefully)
but Gonzo is coming due first and CB's are blowing up the market
Gonzo could set the market if he remains healthy.
''If he remains healthy'' is the key. i'm starting to wonder about his durability. That hamstring pull in the first of training camp looked pretty minor.

He acknowledged the drafting sucked. Guess what, if the drafting didn't suck, he wouldn't be here. Bill would still be here, likely breaking the wins record this year.

It's not really news IMO.

micah's already considering an epidural needle for his back and he hasn't even played one game of a 5 yr contract worth over 180 million. i'd call that a red flag and i'm glad (so far) we flinched. i'd love parsons but we need good draft picks more.

I mean, this is how it is. If you make that trade then you're gaining Parsons (an elite player in his mid 20s) but losing two first round picks, a current starter on defense like Keion White or maybe even Christian Barmore, and also the cash that it takes to extend Parson which was record-setting.

So by trading for him, you are losing two first round level talents, a currently good player, and hits to your cap that could have otherwise signed several additional veteran players. The Pats aren't good enough yet to trade potentially 6+ starting level players just for 1 guy.
