Is dugger so bad that he cannot find a spot in 53 as a backup. Or do we have backups who flash insane potential that we can cut dugger . I hope that's how the call should be made unless someone is willing to take dugger and it saves u say 5 million $ or something of that effect.
Right now it seems like a little of both.
Hawkins is playing well and is a FS.
Woodson also seems to be playing well and can back up both spots.
Dugger is clearly having a tough summer. Which brings up several questions:
First how much does he have left in the tank?
I'd like to think he's young enough that he can still get past this but if he did permanent damage to his ankle last year maybe not.
Can he expand his role to include some linebacker?
Vrabel seemed to basically say they are giving it a try.
Depending on the answers to the first two questions you may want to keep him since there isn't a lot of savings or is there someone who might trade for him?
At this point trade is probably our best option but his cost makes it prohibitive. Maybe if he makes the 53 and gets on the field a little a team with a need for a box safety will feel better taking on his salary and maybe they get a little desperate and ignore the red flags.
All that said and he probably just winds up cut and then hitches on elsewhere with a reasonable salary that allows that team to utilize him in a role that fits what he has left in the tank and is worth his salary. Probably plays a few more years at a decent level but never getting back to where he was a few seasons ago.
