WEEI's Meghan Ottolini had a good piece this morning on Efton Chism III, with Ottolini getting in touch with the undrafted free agent's former high school coach, Michael Bumpus.

Definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen it.

Thanks,Ian. That was a good read.
Very excited about the upcoming season.

A nice bit from the article that does a good job suggesting his pathway to a roster spot:

The Patriots’ receiver room could use a pair of steady hands. The group ranked towards the bottom of the league in production last season, and now several young players are battling just for a spot on the 53-man roster. Both Bumpus and Best agree that Chism’s strongest chance to make the team may come through special teams. He returned tons of punts and kicks for EWU, but the Patriots already have a world-class punt returner in Marcus Jones.

Still, Jones has a track record of injuries, and the Patriots could use someone to return kickoffs.

“He has great hands and makes good decisions,” Bumpus said. “But he’s also used to tackling somebody. So he’ll be a gunner. He’ll do the dirty work, and he’ll be fine.”

Have we ever had such interest in a UDFA so early?

Actual draftee Kobe Minor isn’t even a blip on our radar.

I've been looking to see something like this. We can't just assume he'll make it as a returner so the more he can do the better his chances.

(I think Henderson will return kicks and Marcus stays as PRer)

Marcus Jones is a good returner, no doubt. But it might be better to preserve him for defense and give those reps to Chism instead.

I knew he could return kicks at a high level, but this is the first I had heard or read that he can play defensive special teams as well. There is no way this kid doesn’t make the 53.

Got to feel for Kobe Minor, he must know he has little or no chance of making the roster.

Perhaps he will surprise everyone in camp

Yeah, I would say he starts as a gunner, then slowly starts getting some reps as a punt or kick returner, and then after that slowly starts getting WR reps.

I always thought a gunner needed speed like Slater and Schooler. Chism ran over a 4.7 sec 40 yards dash, that is as slow as molasses. I know Chism's high school coach thinks he can be a gunner, but I highly doubt that. Running a 4.7 40 time the length of the field gives the returner extra critical time to catch the ball and setup the return. I think you might be missing what a Gunner's key athletic traits are.

Gunners are responsible for sprinting down the field during punts and kickoffs to tackle the returner or to force the returner into a less advantageous position. To effectively fulfill this role, gunners must possess significant speed, agility, and the ability to evade or shed blockers. The primary attributes that contribute to success in this role include exceptional speed and acceleration, agility, and strong tackling skills.

There is FAR MORE than recorded speed.
I've seen that ****, been so dumb... it's not as ridiculous as you guys think.
Speed is a Straight line, it's not what is reality in football.
Guys have twitch, that's why Chism is going to make the 53...he broke Kupps ****, which means he is pretty good without camp.
I'm betting he makes it.

Wasn’t it a 4.7?

Chism ran a 4.71 40, and when you are talking about 10’ths of a second I would think that the ability to evade blockers and the football sense to know where the returner will end starting from matter much more than just a pure 40 time, and his acceleration is one of his best assets.
