Your right. Don't forget we drafted Swinson, however I'm sure Vrabel is going to teach him how to play ILB as well as edge. Like Vrabel did.

Elliss and gibbens continue to improve is and would be a welcome sign going forward.. we have some depth, and some time left with Spillane LBs can have career spans into thier mid 30s.. Bruschi played until 34. Did we sign any UDFA LBs?
If Ponder sticks, he could be an EDGE/OLB.

I looked it up and confirmed teams have the opportunity to spread it out over two years post June 1st. If they release or trade a player prior to June 1st, the entire hit is applied for the current season.
Correct. Given our cap room this year, a decent amount of which will carry forward to next year, that becomes irrelevant.

Why did Vrabel keep him around and seemingly have him in line for a starting role then?

So he could take an injury away from someone that matters….i kid…but yea sucks he’s injured…karma what?

I popped a calf muscle hiking one time, You could actually hear a pop, then this blue spot appeared, and I couldn't put any weight on my forefoot. So I had to hike four miles back to my car that way, up one side of the mountain and down the other. I stayed on the ground at first for a minute or two, though. That pop was very creepy.

Unlike Tavai, I did not miss a single day's work. There I was, the next day, my cane hanging from a coat hook, holding forth on the English vs. the Petrarchan sonnet.: pretty heroic stuff on my part, I feel. Clearly, I am the more manly man. We can only hope, for the sake of the team, that Tavai is half the man I am.

I like it. The more depth the better. If you look all around the NFL no team has all pro level talent beyond thier starting level players. Good teams have quality depth wich we've lacked the past few years.

Next man up became next man flop. I think that’s changed.

I disagree. He has potential. Is why Vrabel matched the raiders offer to keep him.
Matching because if potential isn’t he same as he played on and improved last year. Watch the tape. It’s bad.

The entire defense had bad tape last season. Even all pro gonzo gave up some big plays at times last season. Coaching has a lot to do with a players positions they take on the field.

Point is he has potential. Under some real coaching he has a chance to get better. Same thing with Zack baun.. guy was a special teams player, signs a one year deal, and under Vic vangio guy becomes an all pro.

The entire team was bad doesn’t make one of those bad players good.
It’s really a lame excuse.

I have said hopefully he improves, we are in the same page there, but I just totally disagree that he wasn’t terrible last year or that he improved.

I’m just not the guy who makes the argument that if you can find one guy who improved that’s proof that a different guy will. 100s times more guys with Ellis’ background and resume on the field remained bad than suddenly broke out.

I want to make sure we are clear here.
LB, the mental part, is 99% about instinct and reading and diagnosing plays. It’s as much a skill as speed or strength. Ellis was abysmal and reading and diagnosing plays and showed terrible instincts.
Those are difficult things to fix, because they are the inherent skill set that separates good LBs from guys who have the physical skills but can’t translate them to success at the position.
