Bentley allegedly wasn't a fit in Vrabel/Williams scheme, so out for respect for him he was released early to try to latch on with another team. Obviously not news to anyone here. So If anything I can see gibbens being given a shot next to Spillane.. I hear gibbens is a thumper..

How could Bentley not be a fit but slow lumbering Tavai is??????? Bentley is a better athlete than Tavai and was a good captain. I dont see anything on the field that would make me want Tavai over B.

Tavai is a good player too, and is a good off the ball LB, Bentley is a thumper and is often injured. I liked Bentley and I thought him being a captain would factor in to him being here.. also he's coming off his 2nd major injury... Tavai is younger.. but to your point i don't know why he was kept over Bentley.

Bentley was released with a failed physical designation. Tavai hadn’t been injured until yesterday. Simple as that. There’s a reason Bentley hasn’t latched on (and not the “because he stinks” posts that are coming….), it’s because he’s not healthy yet.

We only use 2 LBs
Spillane is an every down guy.

Tavai was in the mix with
Gibbens
Ellis
Mapu
as the other and depth.
Jennings may very well end up playing there some as well because he can’t rush the passer.

If you asked me where we could sustain an injury best, this position would have been near the top.

I’m no Ellis fan, but Tavai to Ellis isn’t a dropoff to be concerned with.

I'm not really sabre rattling to bring him back but as for "not being a fit" - everyone is a fit when **** starts to go sideways... its early yet, and there might be other guys who are kicked loose that can work... but I wouldn't delete Bentleys phone number just yet...

Tavai is not the make-or-break for your defense if he misses time. There are some free agent vets you can bring in to generally plug the role he would play if needed.

Definitely leaves us very thin at LB and probably puts some responsibilities on the safeties to help with the depth. Specifically Mapu who maybe can play both although we haven't really seen it at this level.

Ellis and Spillane will need to step up.

Wish we weren't so quick to cast off Bentley.

I hear you... I admit i was a little surprised when he was released. I believe it likely had more to do with the injury then anything.

The dead cap was more favorable to Bentley than Tavai at the time. Tavai would've been over a $6.4M in dead cap. It's now dropped to $3.5M. I think we've seen the last of Tavai.

One can only hope, he showed up for a play or two a game but I always saw him as a JAG.

It's a loss, but not a huge one. His development had sort of stalled, it seems to me. Too bad, but we have far bigger fish to fry: 300-pound fish who can pass block, for example, and twitchy fish who can catch a ball.
