He had his shot to make an impression. He didn't do anything with it. Blame whoever you want. But I would rather see two FB/TE make the roster and blast holes into the secondary. Bell is a receiving TE and won't beat out Henry or Hooper. I love the size of Dippre and Lampe.

When I thought of the Pat’s rookie class last year, I felt they would use Bell as a secret weapon like he was in college, sneaky routes, even wheel routes. But when he played last year, they really didn’t utilize him like his college teams did, which was surprising. That being said, when he did play, mostly as a blocker, he did pretty well despite not being a typical TE (size wise)

I think Dipre will probably make the team over his m due to massive frame and blocking ability.

I know they had 2 solid TEs ahead of him last year, but he only played 83 snaps. Many of which came in week 18 or garbage time. With a crappy WR core he had every chance to force himself on the field and show at least a few flash plays. He didn't flash once. That is kind of discouraging. He did fine as a blocker, but IMO that's all. Fine. You can find a lot of 'fine' blockers. If that is all he does here he has to be better than that

We've held 3 TE's on the roster before along with a FB.. if Bell has a great camp and preseason under some real coaching I can see him making the final roster cuts or worst case PS.

Josh will presumably carry 3 TE’s and a dedicated FB.

There’s a path to Bell making this roster, but it’s likely at FB unless an injury occurs in front of him.

Agree, although I think he ultimately goes to the PS, at least initially. I think he would be easy to get through waivers without getting poached. A guy like Chism, who was sought after by Denver before deciding to sign with NE, would be more likely to get picked off on waivers. There will be some roster juggling those first couple of weeks. Bell could be involved.

Agreed. I don't understand why some posters can't see this. Bell will have a great opportunity to develop under Josh and a good TE group. Henry being the leader. We also need to start talking about the TEs when we factor in the receiving threats. Henry is a mismatch for Safeties and LBs. I like bells potential he should develop nicely.

I remember Bell lining up wrong on more than one occasion. If you doesn't make the team, it will most likely be about reliablity.

I really like the look of Dippre. I’d give him the best shot of the guys that you mentioned
I can envision Dippre dressing with the 53 as the top two TEs get dinged up with injuries. Happened before, odds are it’ll happen again.

As Mark Morse writes, the Patriots were fortunate to land CJ Dippre as a UDFA.

CJ Dippre will very likely take the 3rd blocking TE role, but there will still be a job search for a FB.

Jaheim Bell and Hector Johnson are good athletes, Johnson is more FB sized but they’re similar.

Duane Martin is a unique athlete, not amazing but a low center of gravity, a whole lot of mass and really strong. He might be the most punishing blocker out of the backfield, which will be something McDaniels will value.

IMO one of these three have the best chance to stick at FB.

Lampe?

As a FB maybe but I feel like CJ Dippre will be our blocking TE. He's got a chance to develop into much more than that though. He's faster than all of them. He just needs to work on his catching and route running.
My take also. Dippre will be TE3 and Bell giving the chance to be the FB/ H-back jack of all traded. I think they hope the kid Larisen is the 4th back.

You love Lamp?

What about him… he’s a stiff. I don’t get the love affair people seem to have with him… is it his cool name?
McD typically uses a FB and I think Lampe is the only player on the team who was a FB in college. I don't think this guarantees him spot they could chose to convert someone else or just go without one but I think this makes him an easy UDFA to pull for. Plus FBs are just fun.

Looked it up cause I was curious, in 3 preseason games last year Bell caught 3 passes for 33 yards. I mean, it's fine. But he didn't really flash in the regular season or preseason.

And I am a believer in preseason production for the most part for these guys. Yes practice matters, but ha.e speed is different. As is the tone. Boutte was the star of that preseason from a pass catching perspective, and it translated to the regular season to some degree.

Bell played a lot of fullback.

Bell played out of he backfield in college, he blocked, ran and caught the ball. Plus maybe more importantly he’s a good athlete, not a stiff.

I don't see him on the 53 this year. He is undersized and doesn't really do anything exceptionally well nor is he a freak athlete. Place him on the practice squad and see if he can be developed into a 2nd or 3rd stringer for next year if they move on from one or both of Hunter/Hooper. Next years free agency and/or draft needs to drum up a TE or two.

He's probably already our 3rd TE but if he can switch to FB that makes room for Dipre or saves a roster spot if he does both. If he's FB we probably need someone else to be TE3 either Dipre or someone else. We'll see either way works for me. Maybe we find room for all 3 if they all play well.
