Player Signing Patriots sign corner Carlton Davis

We need a FS now. Maybe sign Jonathan Jones to be a FS at reduced price.

I think Dell Pettus is going to get a shot at the FS job. He played very well last year on a limited basis.

I mean, he didn't puke on his cleats like Marte Mapu, at least.
I'd like to see them actually get a real free safety in here, FA or draft, there's options in both.

I mean is he really that good or is it hyperbole?
I think he is really good, not a lock down, but very sticky in coverage and big for a CB. I love this signing and with hopefully a better pass rush there will be several INTs. the QBs are not going to have WRs open as soon, in theory, and there will be alot of bad decisions made.

Edit: I thought you were asking about Davis. My bad

A faster Brandon Browner with actual cover skills.
He's not Darrelle Revis, but he's not Jonathan Wilhite either.

  • While Pettus has man coverage skills, he can struggle when sitting back in zone. He’s not instinctive and struggles reading downfield routes and tracking the deep ball.

IDK... doesn't seem suited for FS.

I'd like to see them go to a base dime defense with Peppers at SS, Dugger at "LB" and get a real FS. Pettus can back up Peppers, Mapu can back up Dugger. I think that's the best role for everyone. 2 years from now at least one of Peppers/Dugger are probably gone so there's room to grow into a starting role over time for Pettus still.

Fair point, I based my post on his limited snaps last year and he performed well in coverage. You are probably right about him being better suited as a SS.

Is he EVER going to get beat? Of course, the best get beat(and he's really just VG IMHO)....just ask Revis after Moss smoked him.

Look at the end zone play starting at 1:20. He's chasing Metcalf, but when Metcalf heads towards another defensive player he stops chasing and hangs back. Sure enough Metcalf then reverse course quickly and comes towards Davis again, but Davis is now in a great position to contest the catch. A gung-ho inexperienced corner would have kept chasing and gotten beat.

So what’s the over/under on the number of games this over-paid sick-body misses? I’m l guessing 8-1/2…
Hmm games played is tough to project year to year but I’ll give it a go… if you’re setting it at 8.5 games missed then the answer would be under for every year of his career so far so I’ll roll with that…

You and I are the minority on this guy.
I really don't understand the extreme position you guys have on this guy. He breaks his jaw last year. He doesn't and hes playing essentially a full year. For his career he's missed 27 games out of 116 possible (which is a decent amount) but not horrible.

Also in terms of the stats you put out there, rule of thumb is anything below a 90 QB rating against is very good, 90s is average. 100+ sucks. Hes been over 90 once since his rookie year and was 77 last year with a depleted pass rush.

Hes totally fine as a spot CB1 but a very good CB2.

It's interesting that once you sift through incentives, Davis here, Murphy in MIN, and Ward in IND all got exactly 3 years, $54M base deal. DJ Reed got 3 years, $48M, so almost the same. Seems like the market valued the top 4 CBs all very similarly and it came down to scheme fit. Davis is probably the best outside man cover guy of that bunch, so from that I think you can gather something about the scheme we expect to run.

Maybe Captain will provide more input on why he doesn't like him, but here's why I don't like him:

First, he's never played a full season. There's always something bothering him.

Second, I watched a lot of Bucs games during the Brady years and he always stood out in a bad way. If there were big plays, you'd see the back of his jersey chasing down some guy. But he wasn't the only one. Their entire secondary was pretty awful and a big reason for the Bucs downfall. Was pretty much the same guy in Detroit before his injury where he gives up yards.

He was predictably let go and traded by Tampa because he wasn't worth re-signing. This isn't a Talib or Gilmore situation where they were highly touted 1st round picks possibly misused on their former teams.

Posters are excited because of some out of context ESPN graphic and he got paid a bunch of money - therefore he must be good. We have seen for many years teams pay mediocre players where they quickly find out he wasn't good. See Trey Flowers making the 3rd most for DE's in 2019. People are still trying to figure out who Robert Hunt is.

The good news is that it's really a two year deal as I projected at just over $17M per season. He's also not going to be asked to take on opposing team's top WR's as he did in Tampa or Detroit.

Captain will hate the rain because it's wet. Plus he doesn't like when players miss games. Neither do I which is a totally fair criticism.

You've seen him player more than I have so i'm not going to nitpick there. Hes always seemed like a pretty consistent player to me.

What I see is a guy with playoff experience. Solid citizen. Good tackler. Averages 16 PDs a year over his career. Per game ave is allowing 4 catches for 48yds. 57% comp .If that's vs #1s then he'll own #2s.

Nice. I like this one.

Gonzo, Davis, and Marcus is a good trio. We now have one position that is actually a strength.

Still want Hunter. This just frees him up to play both CB and WR now.

And Toss in Holland too.

Wow. I forgot about Marcus. They are good at starting CB’s, now they just need a FS.
