The Official Vrabel vs Ben Johnson Discussion Thread

Maybe he thinks Vrabel is a formality and he, and possibly by inference, Ben Johnson are wasting precious time. Just comes across as extremely unprofessional and disrespectful by Kraft if this is what's happening. Pats kinda piss me off at times.

Wow.. means Aaron Glenn did not want to be seen as another Rooney rule candidate and feels strongly about his chances elsewhere and realizes he is backup candidate for pats when they don't get Vrabel or Johnson.

That's signs of a confident leader and very high levels of conviction and self respect. Whomsoever gets him is a lucky org. My guess is he goes to Jags or Bears.

Why would he feel that if that Pats already met the requirements of the Rooney Rule? That makes no sense. The Pat's request isn't related to the rule. More likely, he was not one of the first candidates to be considered or its not a great fit for him so he does not want to waste his time.

Do these coach candidates meet with the QB in these meetings

He’s pissed
When the Patriots called the Lions they only asked to interview BJ
They catch flack for how they complied with the Rooney rule
So they put in another request this time for Glenn only after they caught some heat
Glenn is probably insulted and not playing games with them

They all ask to interview pretty much everyone.

The Patriots are very light.

The Jets want to speak with everyone.

I read on this forum that internet interviews don't count for the Rooney Rule anyway.

Let's see the timeline/reported things here...

1) Pats reported favorite candidate is one that can be hired right away (Vrabel) but they also request to talk to Johnson
2) BUT they have to meet the Rooney rule first
3) they immediately interview two seemingly unqualified candidates that "check the box" so they can hire someone right way if they wanted
4) after a day of backlash over it they request to interview Glenn, who every other team already requested as one of their FIRST orders of business

Seems very obvious that they have no intention of hiring Glenn. They just wanted to do it as a token interview not to satisfy the Rooney rule but as a defense against people who said the first two interviews were token interview to satisfy the Rooney rule.

It's a shame too because it's not crazy to think Vrabel and Johnson end up in one of the other openings and in that case they need someone else and Glenn might be the next best candidate. It's frustrating that they're only interviewing two serious candidates and even more frustrating that they managed to piss off other serious candidates in the process with a real possibility they could lose out on their top 2.

Thunder will just bring Mayo back if Vrabel and Johnson fall through.

Pats should want to speak with everyone too. You can learn a lot from the candidates. They all come from different organizations and different backgrounds. When you ask them questions, their answers might open your eyes to some philosophies or ways of operating that you might like even if you go with a different candidate.

That's kind of a weird wrinkle, that the GM opening in LV opened up WHILE Vrabel is interviewing with the Pats. Feels like a leverage move happening live.
Its Vegas signaling to Vrabel that they want him
Close the deal Kraft

If they know they want Vrabel, lock him up asap and do not risk him going elsewhere

Its kind of obvious Vrabel should be the HC
Just like it was obvious Ladd Mcconkey should have been the pick at 34
They screwed that up, I could see them screw up the HC hire

I saw that coming.

Ben Johnson here we come.
If Kraft wands Vrabel he can’t let him leave without a deal.
Otherwise we trot out Flores or Glenn or interview more candidates.
No love for Kellen Moore or Joe Brady?
Kliff Kingsbury.
I’m surprised Kingsbury hasn’t been asked to interview anywhere.

I suspect that Vrabel will be officially named HC no later than Monday the 13th, if not as soon as Friday the 10th.
I think not, watch this space.

When is Vrabel interviewing with Vegas?

They don’t
That’s not what they were trying to do
They already complied with the Rooney rule
They just caught some bad press. The after effect was Oh we also want to interview another black candidate
If they wanted to interview him sincerely they would have requested him when they put in the request for BJ
Glenn is probably insulted and said no thanks

I've spent too much time on patsfans.com today ... I should just sign off until Tuesday, but acting like an addict...
