Which makes Kraft story about teams hiring Mayo right out from under him a joke.

Mayo was a LB coach.
Mayo was a LB coach with zero experience at other positions. Mayo never developed defensive game plans. Mayo never called the defensive plays during the game (except from the field when he was playing).

We had our success with keeping Brady in the same offense with McDaniels almost his whole career.
Mahommes has Reid
This is the blueprint for long term success for a franchise QB.
Yes as long as the offense is the same the OC should not matter too much.

Reid has it. McVay has it.

Vrabel didn't therefore he doesnt have control over his destiny.

Comparing Mayo and Vrabel is nonsensical.

You don't like Vrabel. We get it.
Reid does not have it lol. He very famously said when he went to KC that he wanted to only focus on coaching and wanted to leave GM'ing and all facets of dealing with personnel to someone else. This is well known throughout the league that Reid wants nothing to do with that. He did in Philly and it soured him on it.

McVay has some influence on the roster, but Snead has been there since 2012 and he has final say. Also McVay is a SB winning HC.

Vrabel getting roster control would be an asinine suggestion. It would be a total outlier in the league for a guy who just frankly did not succeed enough to merit it.

It's dumb to compare Vrabel and Mayo because the situations were far too different. The closest you can really get is 2023 and obviously you don't want to hold Vrabel to that.

Idk why Patriots fans would watch the last 6 years and say "damn what we really need is a hard nosed defensive coach who wants more influence on the roster and is a former Patriots player who learned under a former Pats coordinator that learned from Bill". Even if it's slightly better, you're still making all the same mistakes.

Part 1. Chiefs and Lions make the Super Bowl
Part 2. Chiefs talk up the "3 peat" for two weeks
Part 3. Lions absolutely smoke the Chiefs in the big game 54-27
Part 4. The next day, Ben Johnson announces that he is the new Head Coach of the New England Patriots

Believe what you want. At the end of the day those two are calling the shots. Period.

I dont think he asking for it.

Ok you mentioned LBs so..

I don't think people are saying that. I think what they want is a coach who is competent, smart, and can put together a great coaching staff and win.

A Dream

Yeah. QB's work best with stability. People like to act like the good ones were predestined to succeed but the truth is that it's one of the most volatile positions in the league. You can **** them up so many ways. Tons of coaching turnover, poor development, bad talent around them, just losing a lot earlier can screw with their head and get them snakebitten.

Peyton Manning was an all time great HOF QB. His first season he set the TD record for rookies. He also set the INT record. He ended up having an INT issue his whole career relative to his peers and losing so much in big games his first 8 years got him insanely snakebitten in the playoffs and he could only win the big one when his defenses had to carry him across the finish line.

Whoever Scout D is who knows I could make that up.
It’s conjecture l.
I think their availability had some of Kraft's mindshare in the decision but at the end of the day he knew Mayo needed to go no matter what.

Some posters saying we shouldn't hire another young coordinator. Last I checked Mayo wasn't even a coordinator, SB called the plays. Ben Johnson is HC in waiting, whether it be for us or someone else. Not sure why so many are stuck on Vrabel, but if we have an open/fair/full recruitment process then may the best man win.

ps. Maye is our ace in the pack. This isn't Mac or Zappe on deck for the new HC. Offensive minded HCs will want to work with Drake.

Has there ever been a position coach like Mayo ascend straight to NFL HC before?

Either Vrabel or Johnson will come with their guy.
Who is buying the groceries is most important. If it is Wolf Johnson should have a lot of say. Without an experienced GM Johnson should not expect much help from the rest of the organization.

Part 5 Ben Johnson stuffs the chiefs for the next decade and wins more than them.

I think Johnson brings Agnew on as Gm title but collabs with Wolf and Highsmith.

Part of why I like Ben Johnson over Vrabel is that I just want a clean break from the "dynasty" years. It was an amazing time to be a fan, but I think it's time to put that all the way in the past. I think it creates unfair expectations, nostalgia, etc. to keep those connections alive. It's not like Vrabel is only a popular candidate here, but feels like part of the infatuation with him from fans and Kraft is that just seeing his name brings back fond memories of happier days at a Pats fan. Even with players on the roster, at some point I thought it was great to keep guys like Wise, Jon Jones, etc. around as pillars who could recall back to the dynasty era, but it feels like a detriment now. Not that Mayo was great, but I felt the constant comparisons to how he said or did things vs. BB was unfair. It's a new era and the people in place now are going to be doing things their own way and I think we should treat them as new without hanging on to how things worked or didn't work in the past.

Dude I like you, but you are completely wrong with Reid and our going against what he, the entire org and anyone who covers them says. Like it's probably one of the most well known things about the Chiefs that Reid wanted to avoid front office responsibilities like the plague and just wants to finish his career coaching players and working with them on X's and O's and being on the field. Like every single person who remotely covers the Chiefs is very aware of this. It's not a new thing, you probably picked the worst example with Reid.

Personally I think this is more Patriots fans being so accustomed to how Bill Belichick did things and ran the team and no realizing how much of an outlier we became in regards to the coach having control. Teams don't do it that way anymore. The entire league has moved off of it because they view roster building as too big of a job for the guy who has to be coach. We have a tiny operation and it's one of the biggest issues with our front office in that regard.

Idk if he's asking for it now, but he straight up wanted it on the Titans and got in a power struggle there.

I think Patriots fans want a coach that can put together a modern program and can elevate and develop talent.

Correct. Veach was hand-picked by Reid- not Hunt. That is control via proxy.

For the record i'm in on Ben Johnson but Vrabel is the 2nd best option as I don't think hes a "BB guy"

I also think that Vrabel is going to come in trying to sell the idea that he will be the next Bill Belichick and do a bunch of things Kraft is comfortable with and not challenge him because it gives Vrabel more freedom.

Ben Johnson will come in and say "uhhh this isn't how teams do things anymore, I can help bring you into the future".

I don't think it's control if you stay out of it and don't meddle. Which by all accounts Reid doesn't go ear that stuff.

I agree on your second point to a degree.
