Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

It's a simple proposition: Notwithstanding the Belichicks, Mayo was supposed to have been the wizard behind the scenes on what was a strong defensive corps last couple years. Yet, under his HC leadership, that defense has regressed. So in reality, he was the fraudulent wizard behind the curtain. And, with all apologies to Drake Maye, that's not even taking into account the **** show that's the offense.

I never, EVER heard even the slightest hint that Mayo was doing great things ("wizardry") behind the scenes defensively in his role as assistant coach. To the best of my knowledge, his job was running the meeting room -- in other words, imparting game plans devised by SB and BB.

If anyone has info regarding whatever the hell he might have contributed beyond that, please chime in.

They either get rid of Mayo now, or they suffer through another year, get rid of him in 2026 and lose Drake Maye to a team that's ready to "win now" as soon as his Rookie Contract is up...and then start all over again.
Sorry to be a Grinch at this festive time of the year, but that's how I see it.

Mayo pry Coach redded SBs playbook from him and Brian Belichick

It's an interesting situation because out of college the word was Maye was the least ready for the NFL.

Now he makes decisions like a veteran.

Did he learn all by himself?

I was watching Patriots Press Pass where Taylor Kyles and Mike Kadlick are discussing Mayo’s future and they pointed how many players are coming to Mayo’s defense, so that suggests he hasn’t lost the locker room, and that would make it less likely that Mayo gets fired.

Now it is worrisome if Kraft is looking for anything to protect his ego and find a reason to keep Mayo, but the fact that the players are backing Mayo is not a reason to keep Mayo in my opinion.

Maybe losing just doesn’t bother them that much and they like Mayo personally, but that doesn’t mean they will make the effort to correct what they are doing.

Maybe they are just comfortable.

I remember Ben Coates saying how much more relaxing and pleasant it was with Pete Carroll as the coach, as opposed to having to deal with taskmaster Bill Parcells.

They may have liked being coached by Carroll, but they weren’t winning.

They didn’t start winning again until Kraft hired that hard ass Bill Belichick.

What players are backing Mayo?

Watching BB on McAffe was mindblowing. He is joyous, funny, engaging and light.
Clearly the disaster of his last 3 years in NE were largely on him, but maybe not as much as we think. It seems the Krafts forcing certain staff hirings, and clearly pushing Mayo to be inserted as a puppet didn't help.
By the reports - Kraft is going to double down in supporting Mayo. And that means firing all kinds of other guys as scapegoats.
I'm not anti AVP at all. He might be the only competent coach on this staff - judging by the development of Maye and absolute sh*t show the rest of the team is.

Reportedly Maye agreed with Boutte about that.
If so, that is pathetic. I remember the WR always praising TB12 for throwing the same type of ball as Maye to protect them from defenders. This team is not a team, it is a collection of mostly mentally weak individuals. That starts with the coach and GM and all of their stupid comments about not being as mean as BB during the offseason.

I used to teach school. The most popular or well-liked teachers were not at all necessarily the best teachers, and such teachers were avoided by really good students who wanted to get something done. The analogy to head coaching is pretty strong, it seems to me.

News flash: players like coach who doesn’t coach them at all and just lets them do and say whatever they want

Word out of college was just wrong. He was the most ready. Even CJ Stroud said it.
I give AVP credit though, because Maye came from a terrible OC at UNC. He did have things to learn and AVP was actually a good coach to teach him proper setup, the way to recognize certain coverages etc. Maye is a better player because of AVP but Maye was a star the day he walked onto NC campus and these elite special talents will get there eventually. AVP has helped accelerate that vs getting a bad coach like Patricia.

Now it is time to get an innovative OC that understands the nuances of calling plays better than AVP. AVP has served his purpose and now his strengths as a coach are less useful going forward.

I like how @Ross12 said he couldn't wait for Mayo to say some weird comment at the press conference that he'd have to explain the next day, and literally exactly that happened lol

I mean, he does it almost pretty often after a game at this point so it was more just betting that he was going to do it again. Don't give me too much credit. If anything it just makes it all the more depressing lol

Dude thinks he’s Ted Lasso.
Lasso thought he was tripping balls when he made a good scheme and wrinkle to help the team. Guess we gotta give Mayo some non tripping shrooms and tell him hes tripping balls. Hand him a pencil and pad and watch the magic.

It is near the beginning.

Peppers was one.

Plus Peppers is at best a coke head at worst a woman abuser,
The fact Mayo is letting him play is the reason Peppers is backing Mayo. Who else has backed him?

I'd be more inclined to credit McCartney and retain him, than to give Van Pelt too much credit in Maye's development.
