Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

I agree that a top OC and DC are not going to work for Mayo except maybe a friend like Daboll. No veteran coaches are going to be come in and prop up Covington.

Mayo, AVP, and Covington come across as low IQ guys. Disorganized, always retracting their comments, very simple schemes, etc. Kraft should clear out the whole coaching staff but first fire Wolf. Kraft should have done that when BB left.
Hard to argue there. But you have to ask.. why did bill have them on his staff for years?.. Bill's a football legend, historical figure. Knows every Inch of all things football. I don't think those guys are low IQ at all as it would be a reflection on bill. Same with Patricia and judge they aren't low IQ guys either they just were not cut to coach in the roles they were in. they know more football
Xs and Os than the average fan like us. It's the same for Mayo and covington I don't think they are cut out in the roles they are in. That's me being fair about the situation.

Another reason to consider moving on from both Mayo and Wolf/Groh is because the upcoming FA and draft class are projected to be weak. The likelihood they pick the best players from a weak class….

Having the QB buys a staff alot of time. They have that.

I have commented over and over that BB made a huge mistake not firing Wolf and Groh. With new guys BB might have had some good drafts and stuck around.

I think your right 2026 for sure.
Mayo guaranteed last Jan that he would win more than 4 games. Not a bright guy, and a guarantee shows that he is not experienced either. He will not make it. AVP and Covington are so bad that they are only accelerating Mayo's firing. Four more losses this year and it is hard to keep Mayo and Wolf.

Here’s hoping

Yes. The thing is becuase the drafts had gone so bad the organization wanted a collaborative approach. So Bill obviously had no problem with it.. he signed an extension..he probably looked at it like the pressure was off him to a degree.

Your right. But Drake is saving alot of jobs right now that shouldn't be saved. I've posted that the defense has eroded from bad to embarrassing. Pelligrino, covington, Hightower, and Mayo all are bill disciples. It's inexplicable for the defense to be this piss poor.

Most media already wants them gone. Fans that think 2025 is going to be a step in the right direction shouldn't hold their breath due to the weak FA and draft class. And Mayo is not a defensive guy as he's clearly proven in 2024, but Covington is going to take the fall for it. The weak defense is not Covington's fault. Like Mayo, neither should've been hired for their positions.

They just had the 3rd highest picks in each round of the draft, but could only muster Maye? Also, Mayo has zero coaching or player connections around the NFL, so it's going to be hard to recruit anyone like Parcells, Carroll and BB did before him.

If Johnson shows interest in NE, Bob better make the moves of cleaning house and welcoming Johnson to work with Maye. He will not only poach coaches, but Lions players as well.

I understand that it is inexplicable to you that the Defense is this poor, given that
1) Barmore has been out (he isn't even 50% at the moment)
2) Bentley is out.
3) Wise and Dugger have been injured most of the year.
4) Peppers has been out for half the season so far.
5) Ximinez is out (we have been waiting PS LB's in each week).
6) Wolf refused to add solid players at DT, EDGE, LB, CB and S, waiting until next year.
7) Wolf refused to draft any help on Defense.
8) and yes, Wolf refused to sign a real DC, choosing instead to give Covington the title.

I expect about a DOZEN improvements to start the 2025 season, starting with the addition of at least one coach.

In about 50 post I've mentioned everything you mentioned at nauseum. HOWEVER the guys that are out there SHOULD still be playing sound, tackling. We lost judon and gonzo last season and still were a top defense. Wolf did add Ximmenes who when healthy is a solid edge setter, rusher. I can't excuse that. Patriots defensive units have always been good at taking something away regardless of the roster. The Jags game they were punked all game on the LOS. You allow 2 100 yards WRs against the Rams, you allow Miami to try new plays against you becuase they don't respect you. The upcoming Buffalo blowouts are where I think covington takes the fall for the defense.

True. I'll add as I've said previously the thought process was without bill here. The guys handling the defense are all the same with Mayo now overseeing it all. Week 1 they looked excellent.. now I know they lost guys wich I understand. However if the guys playing were getting the right coaching then the defense had taken chance to still be sound. However they can't stop the run, they can't stop the pass. QBs avoid gonzo and attack every one else. Drake is the sole attraction to players and coaches alike. Well $$$$ too!

The issue is that Steve B was the real DC and Mayo was the locker room guy. So finding a “Steve B” equivalent for Covington just means finding an actual DC who will do the job of a DC without the title while another guy has the title but can’t do the job. Who is going to do that who is worth their salt?

The irony here is that many here were ripping Steve Belichick as a nepo baby, and saying he was only coaching because of daddy. Now they want him back. Like daddy o think Steven Belichick is going to end up being a good NFL head coach.

Mayo made Covington the DC, not Wolf. Although I do think Wolf hired Van Pelt.

Do you want to endure them another Year?? I don't!

I don’t either. Belichick should have stayed with the Jets, and keeping Brady as the 4th QB when they have so man needs was stupid. Brady was a total bust this year, and they already have Bledsoe, who just signed a $100 million deal. As usual you are right PF2, the Belichick Brady thing was a bust, they need to make big changes for 2001. Your suggestion that they hire Rich Kotite is a great one.

Well, and add into that the further wrinkle that it has to be someone Mayo knows because his network of coaches is really limited. So, Matt Patricia it is!
Matty P is rumored to be going with Bill to UNC if he takes the job. Wilks is the guy I'd like. A veteran who's been a HC been a different organizations and would be a steady hand for Mayo. It appears most of the support is on the offense rightfully. However isn't Macadoo suppose to be the veteran assistant coach to Mayo? Now are what exactly his role is? Isn't Slater also an assistant?

I think the “nepo baby” stuff is nonsense. People are so quick and gleeful to scream it at any opportunity. In my opinion you can’t really say someone is a serious beneficiary of nepotism unless they have been given a position they were completely unqualified for, or continue to be allowed to hold a role they’re underperforming in, only because of a familial or personal relationship.

Steve worked his way up through the ranks properly. The only thing he was given for free was his very first position which required very little qualification. I never saw him underperform and I have a hard time seeing him as a beneficiary of nepotism.

The only guy I see who is a beneficiary of nepotism is Mayo.

I see your points Ross.. but the reason why nepotism is prevalent here with Bill becuase Stephen was a lacrosse player he didn't play football. Mayo and Covington did at least have football acumen. Same with pelligrino a lacrosse player. Bills career spanning 50 years he network is endless of the connections.

If Stephen were still here and the defense looks like it has all season we would have our answer. I've said myself Mayo's biggest fault was not going elsewhere and then coming back he'd be a much better coach having done so.

Mayo doesn’t fit the definition of nepo, but more and more it’s looking like he cultivated a relationship with Kraft to undercut Belichick, so I get what you are saying. I have been pretty disappointed in his performance this season, and I think his attempt to be the anti-Belichick has largely failed. My expectations were low, but throwing players under the bus, the performance of the defense, and the inability to cut the penalties down have all been indications that he’s doing a poor job. I hate giving coaches a short time to improve a team, but if they see a long term answer would be fine with them moving on from him, but Kraft isn’t going to fire him after a season. The worst thing they can do is to get into the hire-fire-hire-fire-hire-fire-hire-fire cycle, which is the death of all franchises.
