Mayo interview with Curran

Mayo may improve next year, I wouldn't say he's a literal moron incapable of learning.

But that's not the issue here. The issue is, yes, he's extremely green. And many posters here (not myself included, admittingly) called it from the jump: this guy has absolutely no experience and the Patriots are in a situation that seems to necessitate experience.

I can't really think of a more difficult position for an HC - hey, follow in the footsteps of the greatest coach and the greatest QB and countless SB appearances and wins, only after said greatest coach torched everything on the way out, leaving you with a garbage roster. Oh and uh, those two greatest's cultivated an intensely critical fan base. Have fun.

I hold out hope because I want to enjoy Sundays again. I miss it. I hope that the team makes a huge leap next year. But it's a big ask for any HC - let alone a super green HC w/ an underqualified DC and an OC with schizo playcalling.

Mayo hasn’t learn game to game. He is making the same mistakes all year long. I have zero confidence he will be able to learn year to year!

Mayo is the Jaylin Polk of head coaches. It’s clear as day that he is a bust

I just have a problem with someone doing a bad job and basically saying “that’s ok I’ll be better some day”
It just feels like a lack of accountability.

I also didn’t feel good about the talk about “vision” and where he said the whole team contributes to deciding what their vision is. That doesn’t sound like leadership. Then he couldnt really describe what that vision is.

At this point I believe that as long as the Kraft family retains ownership, the franchise will not be competitive.
This

Thunder went from meddling with Tuna to giving BB complete control to the point of running Brady off with a Super Bowl ring left in him.

When it all began to go sideways, Thunder took the wheel again and today he is running this show.

Problem is Kraft set Mayo up to fail. Now that he has, it seems unlikely Kraft will fire him because it would require him to admit that his plan was a mistake. I expect a few assistants will be sacrificed. If so, I only hope that Wolf and Mayo have learned a great deal more than it appears.

Counter example: A fellow I knew who was contact point for new people coming into a teaching band. He got all the rank beginners started. He was great with the newbs, young and old, great with the kids' parents, imparted lots of enthusiasm. However, he was not a good musician but didn't know it. All the beginners passing thru his hands had horrible fundamental skills. They all needed to start over basically from scratch if they wanted to be any good. They sounded a lot like the current Pats look.

So, sure, relating is important and certainly makes things pleasant. But quality demands knowledge.
? That's not a counter example. It actually reinforces and agrees with what I was saying.

I could give countless examples why you're wrong but there's no use arguing with a fundamentally flawed perspective. If this was the NBA, perhaps. Enjoy the futility while Mayo gets his on-the-job training.
It's really hard to believe what people have been watching if they believe this.

Go 11-3 with Chuck Fairbanks?
Then go 2-14 with Ron Erhardt 3 years later.
Then go 11-5 and to the Super Bowl with Ray Berry 4 years later.

This was all the same team. The players from 1978 until 1985 were largely the same. There were no huge additions.

Go 8-8 with Pete Carroll.
Win the Super Bowl with Belichick 2 years later. It was almost the same team except for Brady over Bledsoe, but Bledsoe could've won that Super Bowl as well.

Ok. I'm confused.

It doesn't matter how much you know about teaching and how much you've mastered the content, if you don't care about the people you're trying to teach, none of that will get through.

I'm saying the reverse; it doesn't matter how much you care if you aren't a master of the material and the methods of imparting it. "Caring" won't get it done if you don't know what you're doing.

I started by saying that's what someone said to me this morning. I was told showing you care matters most.

And I countered that by writing this: "This might apply to litttle kids, but I learned more from a complete misanthrope ornery cuss than I learned from anyone in school. He truly didn't care about us; in fact, he went out of his way to terrorize and insult us!...

He just knew his stuff. And presented it in a digestible way."

Ok. Got it. My bad. I locked in on the first part and blanked out on the rest.

I'll be better next year...

Right, but as a fan and knowing we’re stuck with them, I want to find the way to some kind of success. I don’t think the offense is as far away as some people do. I think there’s a more realistic chance that Covington gets fired than Mayo, or they hire someone as an “advisor” who essentially is the defensive coordinator. If we start winning some of these one-score games, the prognosis on the team starts looking different.
True, but sadly the prognosis then becomes perennial mediocrity. I’m not too worried about that, though. The FO doesn’t know how to put a team together, and Mayo can’t coach. We will have to wait for Jonathan to take over or for Bob’s ego to give up on Mayo.
