Defense is the biggest disappointment in 2024...

Coaching and the front office worked in tandem to undermine the defense this year. For all intents and purposes Wolf did not invest anything in the defense, all resources when to the offense. With very little competition in camp, inexperienced coaches, and overconfidence in the defense across the board created a sense of complacency. When injuries hit, the team was not ready to meet the challenge. Going forward Wolf needs to balance investment on both sides of the ball, even if one side seems much better than the other.
I go back to the draft when wolfy says he had to apologize to covington for only selecting 1 player on defense. I kinda really just wanted to get the QB this past off season that is what it was really all about. I don't have this huge expectations that rookie WRs will come I. And do big things year 1.. I'm more disappointed in the defense that's the side of the ball with the continuity.. Mayo, Covington, Brian Belichick, pelligrino.. they should be at least middling they have been worse than the offense since Drake became the starter.

Covington needs to go before AVP as the offense is at least improving and the defense is some how getting worse.
The problem is that if Covington goes, who runs the defense? The BB well has run dry and Mayo hasn't even been a DC himself. Bob really didn't think this though.

Earlier I just said Mayo sucks with no description, so let me actually give reason to my frustration: as many have noted - they never make the right adjustment or do it in time. The last game is what really made me wanna toss in the towel in.

I agree that talent is kinda there, but if anyone can watch that Rams game and not wonder why the hell they failed to make any adjustments in the secondary. Why run a cover zero blitz and leave Kupp 1v1 with anyone but Gonzo. Just weird issues for someone who was a defensive mind as a HC.

It may be better to ditch the BB defense, because it requires a high level of knowledge, and understanding of how the pieces fit together and no one left can do that.
A new system is better than a system no one is smart enough to implement.

Flores '25????

If you're implying him as DC, he has to be either fired or have an expiring contract. This was why Mayo declined taking title of the DC position last season as you can only leave your team with a promotion. Lateral moves aren't allowed.

The more of this stuff that comes out, the more difficult it is to feel confident about coaching and front office. They need a DC with a cohesive vision that they own, instead of trying to reproduce a system no one understands well enough. Unfortunately the team has been trying to do the same thing on the offensive side of the ball since TB12/JMD left. Clearly Kraft did not go far enough with his BB replacement strategy. It feels like the team is has one foot stuck in the past while the rest of the body is trying to cut that leg off to prove that they are not stuck in the past.

If covington were to go I'd say bring in Vrabel as DC

Vrabel will be a hc next season

Open HC positions guaranteed for 2025

Jets
Cowboys
Bengals
Saints
Jaguars
Raiders
Giants

Potentislly HC positions that could open

Patriots
Eagles
Browns

Not that many good coaches available.

Ben Johnson
Kliff Kingsbury
Bill
Vrabel
Flores
Todd monken

No way Vrabel takes a DC position.

The Bengals aren’t firing their coach.

I became down on the defense becuase they have steadily gotten worse each week. I think the defensive side is solely on Mayo to run.. I believe everyone on this staff the clock starts on them next season. AVP has been the best of the worst of the coaching staff.

Really AVP has been terrible but Maye playing has hidden it from the spotlight.

Wether we want we like it or not he deserves credit for Maye's development. The QB is most important position in sports and we have one. So let's surround Drake with weapons and see what happens.

Mayo has said he wants to be a "walk around coach" who "empowers" his staff. He promotes a DL coach to DC when Mayo has never shown to be a competent DC himself. This move by Kraft is looking worse by the day.

We as fans were overconfident in regards to the defense, assuming that they would perform as well both on the field and statistically as they did in 2024. What has transpired should really not be all that surprising. One shouldn't fall into the trap of "the team will be better because Player X will be back from an injury" while simultaneously ignoring that inevitable injuries will occur the following season.

These three quotes sum up much of how I feel about this thread's subject matter.

Defense came in with some obvious deficiencies at edge, outside cb, and dl depth. Some other lesser obvious needs. This was compounded by major injuries/situations to 3 very key defenders. We need health and to address the former 3 areas at least this offseason. hoping we either get peppers back for 25 or get enough relief on his salary to fill that void too. Coaching needs to improve too, they certainly look like a rookie staff

Last years defense was overall top 10 based on a top 5 run defense. Losing Barmore and Bentley, Peppers, and perhaps Guy has hurt them significantly against the run.

They were #15 last year against the pass, without Gonzalez or Judon for the most part, but they were bottom 10 creating turnovers and below average in sacks, pressures, and hits. My apologies here for not looking up their numbers from last year in those metrics but that’s what I recall from the last time I checked turnovers, etc. They have not improved even with Gonzalez coming back, it’s not surprising when you factor in the biggest loss of all to their defense (BB).

This is why, if Campbell’s arm length is proven to be an issue or alternatively if his arm length is fine but he is gone by the time the Pats are on the clock (I am assuming that Hunter will go #1 and McMillen will also be gone, assuming their measurables are good) and if a suitable haul for their pick is not offered, I’d be looking hard at someone who can rush the passer well or nail down the other CB slot before going for a different WR or OT. I might also be tempted by Jeanty if he could be at the Barkley level of potential impact for their offense.

They need high end talent in just about every position, guys who can wreck a game for their opponent. I see Hunter and Tet in that light, maybe Graham or (if recovered) Will Johnson also.

Other guys I like but don’t know if they can be at the game wrecker level are Scourton and Pearce at Edge, Grant, Nolen, and Walker at DT, Egbuka, Bond, and Restrepo at WR, Loveland and Warren at TE, Banks, and Simmons, and Ersery at OT.

I expected it.
You took away the brains of the defense.
The defense succeeded by being a game plan, role player, play as a team unit that hid weaknesses
Players were subtracted and no one added to replace them is worth a dime.
The front office bought into the “don’t worry the defense is always fine” line without recognizing those things.

@PATSYLICIOUS always has good insights on the team a very good poster.

@captain stone would agree with this statement... Covington was a college WR who, when he came to the Patriots was tasked with coaching the defense.. like so man other coaches including Pelligrino, who was lacrosse coach. Why do you think this was occurring under Bill. Was it 'a coach is a coach' thinking? As bad as the coaching has been this year, I truly believe everyone was thrown a caveat for this season. Next season is where the clock starts ticking on everyone. I fully expect the team to add weapons on offense, and play makers on defense. If the defensive coaching is still bad then I believe ownership makes a change at DC.

They don't play sound and together. They give no resistance to an offense. It's inexplicable to be terrible against the pass and against the run. Stop something
To coin a phrase, they can't stop a nose bleed.

Great phrase... one thing we have to give BB credit on even we there were lesser talented guys on defense they still played well and got better as the season wore on.. I gave covington the benefit of the doubt all season but now 11 games in this defense is the biggest disappointment.
