Losing Barmore, Bentley was debilitating but not as much as losing the premier defensive mind of this century at coach. Hell, look how the Jet’s defense fell off a cliff the moment Saleh was fired. They weren’t good offensively but at least they could hang their hat on superior defense.

You need talented players along with smart coaches, just one won’t do.

They still weren't as good as they were made out to be. Couldn't compete with good teams. Now of course they have trouble against bad teams too.

47-17 was a total coaching failure.

While they weren’t the main problem, they’ve been overmatched by competent offenses for years. If you’re going to neglect the offense, but then put the blame on them, you better have an exceptional defense. They didn’t.

Bill’s assistants don’t have a good track record and Devin McCourty had said Steve told him he was freaking out because he felt he didn’t know what he was doing his first day as S’s coach. Many didn’t like him here because of the nepotism and we all knew it was Bill’s defense.

He’s done a good job in Washington and he’ll probably come back to the NFL at some point.

That was bad. Good point, but my argument is that they have fallen off this year compared to last year. Though I guess there are likely objective metrics like PFF or whatever. I'm not an x and o guy I'm an eyeball test type of guy. So maybe someone here has the numbers or metrics or whatever.

They have fallen off this year for sure, as now they have trouble beating bad teams as well as good. Before they could at least handle the bad offenses.

Last year they were bottom 3rd in the league in turnovers forced, this year they are very close to the bottom.

They haven't been an elite defense for a while, not since Super Bowl 53

This was what happened to Matt Patricia. Detroit's defense got worse since his arrival. He was quickly canned.

Avoid PFF like the plague. They said Gilmore was a mediocre CB during his DPOTY season in 2019 and later said Jalen Mills was the best CB through the 2nd half of the 2021 season. The latest PFF hero is Jared Verse.

PFF is only used to try to win internet arguments.

There are some positives: White looks like a beast and is getting needed experience; Jennings has emerged; Tavai continues to be solid; Gonzo came back from injury and is elite. marcus jones is a keeper. Dell Pettus seems like a find. Bring back the injured/missing players, a few draft picks, and a couple free agents, and we have a solid group.

Love your optimism. The guys that are currently playing should be improving so that when guys get healthy and new players are added In the off they can Have clearly defined roles..

Even if the Patriots had had Prime Brady, Gronk, Moss, Welker, and Edelman they would have had trouble in the game.
