if Brissett is injured, seemingly Maye is next in line, no? wouldn't he offer the best chance to win, seeing as he will have received many more snaps in practice over Zappe? in theory, through the summer, Zappe would be the lesser experienced QB in this offense.
It depends on the team's goals for this year. Is the goal to win as many games as possible, even if it could hinder the development of or risk serious injury to their franchise QB (if the line can't protect)? It could be (I doubt it). Or is the goal to protect and develop Maye this year on a schedule dictated by the coaches, not by circumstance? Brissett's signing argues that the team is taking the latter course, and I don't think they will change course due to a Brissett injury, unless the situation changes. That is, if Maye looks ready and OL is solid.

The Goal should be for the Offense to pull its weight we could have close to a Elite Defense with good health would hate to waste it. A competent Offense wins some games. IF Maye looks the part sky's the limit I hope he plays like Joe Burrow.

I cannot see a scenario other than injury where Zippy gets the reps to show out. the other 3 need reps, and giving them to Zappe seems wasteful.
You are assuming two things: (1) Maye is either QB1 or QB2, and (2) the team sees Milton as a viable QB3. To start the season, I don't think either is true. But even if Maye is QB1 or QB2, that doesn't make Milton a viable QB3 at this stage, and like Maye, I think throwing him out there before he's ready only has risk and no reward. This is not a win now, playoff-push season.

Brissett was signed to start until the team thinks Maye is ready to play. There is no magic time. And, yes, the team will make that decision before every game, and after every change in circumstance.

The team has NOT decided to sit Maye until the OL is solid. That is the wish of some fans. Those same fans will probably not agree that the OL is ready to protect Maye until after this season and perhaps into the middle of the 2025 season, or later.

Should the offense "pull its weight" even if it risks Maye's health and development? Or, alternatively, should Maye's safety and progression come second to winning games THIS season? You seem to be dodging this question. "Yes, this is football, it's dangerous and Maye will learn more from the crucible than from the bench" is a valid response, but no one wants to say it.

How do you know that the team isn't factoring the OL into that decision? I'd like to see some quotes from team personnel supporting that, because that would indeed be a development and change my assessment.

If he sucks, there has to be someone better available, right? "Sucks" is an easy bar to get over. Why hasn't he been cut yet? Whoever takes his spot as backup/PS QB should at least be brought up to speed on the AVP system this preseason should a rash of injuries strike. Why are they letting a failure of a QB like Zappe get the coaching and reps his non-sucking replacement should get? Mayo & Co. are already showing gross incompetence, I guess.

Brissett will be starting. I feel like them saying its a competition means its for the future face, not for the rest of the QBs. They brought in and paid Brissett specifically to start until Maye's ready/OL is working like a well oiled machine. Only way Zappe starts is if/when Bris goes down and Maye's still not ready.

I think everyone is asking that question, and Mayo has stated they will not keep 4.
Zappe has already been relegated to 4th.
I assume he is cut shortly

I miss Cam

I miss Cam
I don't. I look forward to the Maye era starting. But as much as I dislike Brissett and Zappe, I'd rather have them play over Newton. That is how bad Newton was in 2020. The rugby style play calls 5-10 yards out from the endzone with Cam running straight into a pile was some of the most bizarre **** I've seen.

Yeah. I wonder if Mayo was just giving his version of BB's "the best players will play" line. I like BB's better.

Agreed. Made me think of this

No idea why he didn’t run to the right side when they were expecting left all the way… he fooled them for a TD earlier in the game running left when they expected right not sure why they didn’t try it again here.

Tongue in cheek but I kinda miss him anyway I guess lol.

If Brissett is starting until the OL is working like a well oiled machine, then we should have signed hm to a 2 or 3 year contract.

Okay. I think that's more like the definition of an NFL starting QB, but okay. It's restrictive, because you can event point to existing starters who don't meet it, but different strokes for...

I wonder how different the thread would have been if I had substituted Zappe with "Backup QB" (not named Maye and Milton, because obviously the calculus is very different with either of those players). Zappe is so polarizing that I think logic goes out the window sometimes. But, at least it was a spicy thread and generated interest. Things have been slow lately.

I basically look at it as an NFL caliber QB is one you can start and win with, or has the potential to do that. One team could have 2-3 of them, another, like last years Patriots, could have none. People will always disagree on who is or isn’t an NFL CALIBER qb, but that’s the standard I apply to it.

Almost every year it takes a few games for them to get to this point….i don’t think I can remember a year that they were firing on all pistons right out the gate.

Might be different this year with a new regime... we'll see.

So apparently NFL teams should go through the entire offseason with somewhere between 55-65 players.
After all, the 25-35 others aren't going to make the week one roster anyways, so what's the point?
