It's easy, and only takes a few moments. Before the deadline Onwenu could only negotiate with one team, after the deadline to franchise he can negotiate with every team. Completion drives contract values up and the higher his value goes the less likely the Pats are to retain him.
I think it hurts Dugger's chance to get a deal, because a team offering to him has to put it up, I believe, which means they could be out of the FA market with that (lot of) money while the Pats decide whether or not to match. As long as they are planning to match any deal - which they can easily do - I don't mind this at all. They are essentially playing the odds that no one gives him a deal of $17m a year, which is the franchise tag number. If they have assessed his market accurately, they should get him at a solid enough price.
They need to accompany this with a proper top of the market offer to Onwenu though.
They were never getting a comp pick off of this free agency. Save your emotions for a week or 2, you'll feel better.I think it hurts Dugger's chance to get a deal, because a team offering to him has to put it up, I believe, which means they could be out of the FA market with that (lot of) money while the Pats decide whether or not to match.
Also, NO, the Pats WILL NOT get a comp pick if he leaves because they decline to match.
The Winfield tag was expected by most fans. The Pats very likely knew that he was going to be tagged. The Dugger decision probably had nothing to do with Winfield. With Winfield tagged they probably didn’t see a choice. They must really have a high opinion of Duggar’s play.
What are you basing that on?It's looking more and more like Onwenu is not coming back. Although, stranger things have happened.
Exactly. I may be irritated with the decision later on. But no one can really judge our staff’s decision making yet one move into the offseason. They were never getting a comp pick off of this free agency. Save your emotions for a week or 2, you'll feel better.
But it is not really stopping people. So many are assuming it was Dugger OR Onwenu. When it is notExactly. I may be irritated with the decision later on. But no one can really judge our staff’s decision making yet one move into the offseason.
Save your condescension. They were never getting a comp pick off of this free agency. Save your emotions for a week or 2, you'll feel better.
Yeah, I know.
Confidence is not high.

Why would he be upset he still gets to go to the market and get a contract either he plays for that team at that contract or he plays for the pats at that contract. Teams do not guve anything up for the transition tag unlike the franchise tagSave your condescension.
This wasn't a promising move for team tying to change their reputation. You think Dugger is happy about this?
no - franchise tags are no freaking good, unless all you want is 1 more year of that player at a very high price. It never leads to a long term deal cause you've handed over all the leverage to the player. It's a gut punch to Dugger. A team offering him will have to tie up their FA resources for nearly a week while the others in the market go away, which means he comes back and the Pats save a couple million dollars.
If you're going to tag a guy you want to keep, a guy who came up through his rookie deal in your system, use the damned Franchise Tag.
How so? They can keep him no matter what other team will still talk to him.Curtis Martin 2.0.
Very bizarre move.
They have to match it to keep him. Just sign him or move on. Kraft is playing games like he did with Martin who as we know was a way superior player. How so? They can keep him no matter what other team will still talk to him.
Yes they do . Yet Dugger could have chosen to just go now the patriots can keep him at his market value instead of guessingThey have to match it to keep him. Just sign him or move on. Kraft is playing games like he did with Martin who as we know was a way superior player.
