Pats trade for JC Jackson

This is what his cap hit looks like :

9 Million this year and 14 million for the remaining 3 years. A big chunk of the package was the signing bonus (40 mill) which the Chargers suck up. Doesnt sound too bad if he plays like the old JC.
Now, we can back out of this after this year without those cap hits in 24 onwards, am I reading that right?

Good move if that's the case.

I've been hoping they traded for him since last year. He's a severely depressed asset that I think the Chargers are simply mismanaging. I think he will bounce back here. He may not be as good as he used to be but he'll be solid. If we can get to a place where we have Jon Jones, JC Jackson and Jack Jones out there, they'll be more than fine. If Gonzo eventually comes back, they'll be freakin' elite. And JC is signed for several years so even if Gonzo isn't back this year, next year, things will look good... Color me optimistic.

It’s amazing just how predictable the Pats are. Can they get some player basically for free? Then they’ll sign him. Doesn’t matter if he sucks.

Gonzo is done for the year.

Ok so MAYBE the defense stays par… offense is still impotent

This a playoff team in your eyes?
They are 1 game out with 13 to play. If they win enough of them they will be a playoff team. They have a great opportunity over the next 6 games with an easy schedule to be in the hunt. Let’s see how they play in those games and see what the playoff prospects are then with 7 games to go.

Wow! Well i hope the contract is easy to escape next year in case he is truly done. If hes anywhere near the guy he was 2018-2021 then those numbers look fine.
They can escape any time for a cost of $0.00.

With this roster, there are no easy games on the schedule.

If the Chargers are eating most of this year's salary and the Pats swapped a 6th for a 7th, I see that as a win for the Pats. At worst, he is an one year rent a player who is washed up. At best, he becomes a legitimate #1 CB again this year and possibly redoes his deal next offseason and becomes the #2 CB opposite Gonzalez.

We shall see. There are 4 weak teams in the next 6 games.
The team needs to grow and improve. That’s what competitive sports are.

Hopefully Gonzos season ending injury isn’t a long term reoccurring issue with what he’s dealing with.

I don't think torn labrums tend to be long term issues. I could be wrong.

This basically isn't even making a move, this is just a no brainer taking him for a pick swap and less than 2 million bucks for the rest of the season with no guaranteed money in the future, you can't have Bryant covering WR1 or WR2s.

The Chargers are pretty much giving him to you to get him off the books in future years.

I wonder if they are thinking of moving Mills back to CB full time.

He's essentially got a $12M salary each year through 2026, but his 2023 salary is guaranteed. 4 weeks of that salary has been paid by LAC, so the Pats are on the hook for around $9M (I think). The good news is that all of his existing signing bonus is being eaten by the Chargers. Theoretically, they could convert his 2023 salary into a signing bonus and spread it out over 4 years at a rate of $3M a year to lower his cap hit to around $4M this year. His hit would increase to $15M a year over the next few seasons, but his salaries are all non-guaranteed, so if he proves to not be worth it he could be cut next year for essentially a dead money hit that's a little less than the salary they would've had to otherwise pay him this year. However, I think in all likelihood he will probably be worth that contract especially as the cap increases.

Why? They got a swap of a 7th for a 6th and ate all the dead money.
They moved on from a overrated guy who sucked in their system I think we are getting that player. Take your rose colored glasses off.
