Report: Patriots looked into trade for Case Keenum

Knowing the rules is one thing, but Goodall can punish whomever he wants.

Bill had a reasonable understanding about the filming rule, but Goodell stole a 1st round pick regardless.
No. Bill was flat out in violation of the filming rule. He has said so himself.

I very much Bill pushes the envelope at all with the new QB rule ...

Is that an excuse? Well many of the other teams are a joke at the most important position so we can be too!
This is life for any team without a franchise QB. Brady and to a lesser extent Bledsoe spared us this experience for the last few decades. If Mac can take a major step forward this year and there's no good reason why he shouldn't be expected to then that will fix a lot of issues.

Joke is a bit hyperbolic but let me ask you, did you believe post-Brady our QB situation would look like this?
Yes. You don't replace the greatest QB who ever lived overnight and overcome a bad cap situation going into 2020. What did you expect? 14-3 and Super Bowls every year?

What I didn't expect is how horrifically undisciplined and stupid they played last year.

I agree. It has been the biggest disappointment of the preseason - Zappe's regression ...
I don't know if it was as much of a "regression" as his flaws as a limited QB being exposed for everyone to see. This is the real Zappe, it's who he always was. Like I said earlier this year if he somehow become our starter then something went terribly wrong at the QB position.

Just going through the grind like every other team does. We were spared this with Brady for 20 years. Unprecedented and some don’t deal with the aftermath very well.
Like I told amfootball what was unacceptable last year was the undiciplined, stupid football and the gross miscalculation Fat Matt can implement and run an NFL offense.

I didn't expect Brady at all. What I did expect was more of a plan when Brady left. I didn't expect a year of Newton or last year with Patricia as DC. That is why I called it a clown show. It is one thing to go 8-9 or 9-8 and the operation looks buttoned-up and on its way to contending again. It has looked just the opposite IMO.

The clause “during the playing of the game” is where Bill thought he had wiggle room.

Goodall said he didn’t believe him.

I believe the rule said video equipment could not be on the field at all.

I think Bill's mistake with spygate was pushing a little too far at the wrong time. I'll bet he'd pushed the envelope on rules plenty of times prior, and what happened was the league said, "Hey, stop that" then adjusted or clarified the rule.

With spygate, he did it to a protege who was looking for a way to bite back at him, with a new commissioner who wanted to establish his authority, at a time when Patriot hate was at an all time high amongst fans and other owners. So once the optics of it became public, Goodell decided to bring the hammer down out of principle. I imagine Belichick expected to get another memo, not a loss of a first round pick. Miscalculation on his part.

Last year was absolutely a clown show. Unacceptable.

Despite what you think the 2017Jimmy, Brady situation was managed as best it could. Any rumors of getting a 1st rounder for Jimmy are exactly that- rumors. Bill drew it out as long as he possibly could.

I think it’s 3 or 4 times and he can be protected on the practice squad.
That rule was put in place to prevent players a team predicts they will need to elevate that week from being poached. It is not to protect a player long-term. That's why there is a period each week where no one can be protected.

We knew it was going to be a lot worse naturally, going from the GOAT who was also an iron man and never missed games

Almost no teams have a new starting caliber quality QB1 to replace their hall of famer.. can count on 1 hand the number of times in NFL history that has happened

This 3rd year will go far in telling us what our QB situation looks like... If Mac isnt cut out for it, then our situation is atrocious.. if he builds off of his rookie season success and continues to grow, then I think we're in a decent spot from a QB perspective but obviously need to keep searching for a QB2 (Corral could be that guy)

Id imagine BB is going to continue to draft a QB virtually every year going forward, similar to what he has done even when Brady was on the team, constantly searching and trying to develop more QBs

Tom Brady aint walking thru that door (well he is, but only for Sunday's game as a farewell/send off), and if you compare every QB we get to Brady you'll never be happy because Brady was the GOAT and there will never be anyone like him ever again

I'm not comparing anyone to Brady. I am talking strictly about the process. When Brady left, we had no transition plan and had to scrap Newton off the trash heap. When McDaniels left, no transition plan again so Bill plugs in Patricia as his OC which was an unmitigated disaster.

I agree on Mac proving if he is the guy this year. Hopefully he stays healthy to give us an answer one or the other. But if he tanks than this soft rebuild starts all over again ...

No.

Do you think Bill is done with him because how many weeks can you elevate a QB to #2 before someone grabs him?
No. I think if Bill were done with him, he'd no longer be here.

I think he will be on the 53 as the back up.

we claimed Corral off the waiver wire, so we had to put him on the 53... not sure how long he needs to stay on the 53... could see us keeping him in the number 2 spot for a week, then moving him down to inactive as the third/emergency qb while BZ takes over as number 2...

Yea it was a bit weird of a transition, could have been intentional as a way to reset the cap.. at least that would explain the 2020 season

2021 was a competitive year with a rookie QB, but then the Patricia disaster really derailed any momentum the team had established.. People have theorized that BB had his heart set on OBrien but knew he had to wait 1 more year, so he thought he could bandaid the OC position as a bridge year and it failed spectacularly

Not BB's best moment, we were wobbled from all of that and it looked scary, but we're starting to normalize and get our legs under us again with OBrian

We very well may get the bag beaten out of us in week 1, so I wouldn't really use week 1 as a measuring stick but im sure we're going to have quite a few people declare the season a complete failure if we don't pull off an upset of the team that should have won SB last year and was dominant

Eagles defensive line is terrifying... going to be a rough and immediate gut check type of game out of the gates

If DOES matter who the offender is as well.

Other teams could just stay quiet as the league took steps to weaken the monster who was destroying their own teams’ chances of winning a SB.

Remember when the Denver Broncos were caught filming the 49ers’ pregame walkthrough, under HC Josh McDaniel?

As a repeat offender the Broncos should have lost a 1st round pick and more, but they were only fined $300,000.

No one cares about crippling a 5-11 team and bringing them back to the pack.

But Bill IMO is a cut above every other Joe. At least that is what everyone believed when he had Brady. Most thought we would be just fine post-Brady and continue to be perennial playoff contenders ...

Gotta give him time to rebuild a contender post-Brady.. time is running out tho, I originally said I would give him 5 years to reset cap and rebuild a contender under a new QB

We're on year 4.. this is a huge year that will determine a lot about the future of this franchise

Hey guys, could we please bring this back to the QB2 situation or Keenum? If you all want a thread to discuss the post-Brady QB succession plan, we can make a new one for that.

Sort of OT but here's my power rankings for Pats backup QBs in the BB/Brady and post Brady eras

1. Drew
2. Jimmy
3. Cassel
4. Brisket
5. Hoyer
6. Zappe
7. Huard
8. Flutie
9. Mallett
10. Stidham

Hard to say where Keenum would be on this list. He'd be up there though. Maybe after Jimmy?
