Juju fires back against Breer's explosive knee claim

When the dean of the genre has nicknames like Shank and CHB, is there any wonder that the disciples follow suit? I actually remember
when the Globe was a decent newspaper Yeah, it was a long time ago, I'm old
Shank should have called it a day after the Sox won their first in this century. So he's closing in on 20 years overdue in hanging them up.

Come on, fess up - what was your one weird trick?
LOL, literally no rhyme or reason. Would love to know why, but it's only happened maybe single-digit times and there was no real explanation for those either.

But what's crazy when it comes to the Globe is that while they have Ben Volin (who obviously rubs people the wrong way) you've got Christopher Price, Jim McBride and Nicole Yang, all of which are solid reporters. The problem is, none of those three are opinion columnists, so you probably don't even see most of what they write because none of it makes enough noise to register on the radar.

Again, that's certainly part of the problem these days. And that's why it's always Volin who makes the headlines while those types of talented names hardly ever come up.
This is true and sad. The people at the Globe who actually report on the team (as opposed to Volin's rumor-mongering in between blowjobs for Aaron Rodgers) are really pretty damn good.

Ian, it's not that Voln "rubs me the wrong way". It's that he's incompetent. 90% of his content is just rewrites of OTHER peoples' columns the next day or two later. He has NOTHING to offer. His opinions are unoriginal and just mirror talk radio or wherever the prevailing wind is blowing. The fact he has a job (especially such a great job) is offensive to me and SHOULD be for everyone else.

This is not an opinion, Ian. It is a FACT that keeps getting proven EVERY time he opens his metaphorical mouth.

It's actually once of the best groups in a while, yet I hardly ever see their articles/bylines. Definitely frustrating because all three are terrific.

I obviously agree with you, and that move he made on the radio last year based off that fake DM didn't do him any favors. My point was just that he's the guy we hear about while the quality people who are there don't get anywhere near the attention they should.

Yeah, I recently restarted on the Globe sports section and have been pleasantly surprised at the breadth and quality. Don't they know that they are supposed to suck?

We're back to 5 now Mike. Thorntons on IR as expected. We'll see him some time in October and who knows what the situation will be,

Yeah, although as its been pointed out, Gesicki is really just a big WR.

Sorry but that's the kind of interpretation that sounds like you work in talk radio. You are basically giving credence to Breer simply because JJS chose to go into detail about his injury instead of blurting out "Dude's full of ****". Pardon me for JJS being articulate.
Nah man. Gonna have to disagree with you here. This has nothing to do with being articulate. Maybe I should have been more articulate? Here we go. I would’ve felt better had JJSS come out and said “Not sure where that report is coming from. I got injured. It got cleaned up. Knee is 100% and I’m good to go.” Don’t be dramatic about what I said. I didn’t give credence to jack. I stated it like it was. At no point did JJSS come out and completely state that he is 100%. Which is what I said and that gave me pause. I didn’t even read the Breer article. I saw the headline and quotes some folks here shared and thought he was making **** up. Then this comes out, I read it and the way I interpreted it is that JJSS is saying he’s getting better but he isn’t quite there yet.

"Jj Is Old, hE MiSsEd TiMe"

Shrug. I appreciated the honesty about an injury, which we don't get very often.

I think Bourne, Boutte and DeMario are the quality depth. We don't usually carry six WRs. I feel better about our WRs this year.
He was honest. That’s what I was saying. He isn’t 100%. I’m not giving Breer any credit, if that’s how it came across. I actually just thought Breer was making it all up. That’s what has me somewhat concerned. He’s still working at getting to 100%. It’s a knee injury. That sucks! Bourne is great depth but Boutte and Mr. Pop haven’t done anything in the league yet. I REFUSE (though I absolutely want to) to get pumped about those guys until it’s a week in and week out deal. Fingers crossed they both turn into what we all have been clamoring for.

WOW! I can't believe I'm going to defend Dan Shaughnessy.

But Shaughnessy was VASTLY different than Volin. Shaughnessy was a fantastic beat reporter for the C's in the 80's and into the 90's. When he moved on into his opinion column he could piss off a lot of people with his opinions. The difference was his pieces were almost always well written, interesting (even if it made yourhead explode) and he backed it up with facts. He generally had good sources, AND most importantly when he was wrong he owned up to it. Volin has NONE of these qualities.

That seems to me to be pretty much exactly what he said.

I saw a few people bring this up in the other thread, but the thing I posted here, which I linked back to Darren's entry, was basically just pointing out his comment. After digging up the video and watching the report, it was something I hadn't heard and thought it was interesting. I had heard other guys in the media voice similar concerns, but that was prior to Breer's comment, and as much as people here don't like him, he is relatively plugged in around the league given what he's done since he took over for Peter King. Albeit, I don't think he fully thought it through before he said it.

One thing that was surprising was the fact the entry I posted ended up going viral, which was bizarre because I didn't post it on Twitter, and it only got a handful of referrals from our Facebook page. Instead, it got like 10s of thousands of views after hitting the top of the search engines in the news section, which makes zero sense because that rarely ever happens, even on things where a lot of effort has gone into it.

That absolutely caught me off guard, especially since I threw it together as I was heading out the door after I was just trying to post a few things to help boost traffic on the blog a bit for that day. His comment was something I hadn't heard, so it was just something I was passing along here.

Again, anyone wondering why reporters/writers say or write outlandish things, I guess that's the reason. Normal news reports get zero traffic. Opinions, even ones like that which were somewhat in passing (Again, I don't think Breer meant it to become what it became, and he just had that piece on Mac last week, which was great), are sadly what people read/click on.

Our blog gets a handful of views and is basically just me maintaining our little corner of the internet. I think anyone who sees the day-to-day stuff posted is aware it's certainly not a "look at me" type of thing. For those of you who are part of the literally dozens of people each day who do read it (@captain stone) , I appreciate it.

Just a little look at behind the curtain to show you the state of things these days. That's also why you've seen a shift in reporters moving more toward those roles because it's just impossible for them and anyone else to survive in this climate online otherwise, whether it be online or on-air. It is what it is.
I get the sense that Breer didn't even mean to say that in a way that meant to make waves. It seemed like he was just commenting, but also casually embellishing, like someone might with a friend or something. But because of his stature, people took it as though he were reporting something.

It really rubbed me the wrong way because in one thread we were discussing how Juju had caught more receptions than anyone in camp and it had been underreported by the media. So it seemed really strange to hear Breer say something that seemed to be--at least the tone of it--contradicted by the actual facts.

But I think that highlights one of the things I really like about Mike Reiss and some of the other great beat reporters. Reiss almost never speaks off the cuff or embellishes like that. If he says it, you know it's backed up in fact.

A number of people have said it on here and it's really true, not all media reports are equal. As consumers, we really have to weigh what we know about the journalist before we necessarily take anything they say to the bank. Pats fans probably know that better than anyone.

3 years? Very few people are going to remember that Breer said this in a month… regardless of what happens to his knee. Part and parcel of the never ending news cycle.

I guess I'm also thinking about this board. Getting a sense of people sharpening their knives and just dying to use them by saying "I told you Breer was full of it" or "I told you BB sux for getting injured guys." Those 2 camps ain't putting their weapons down in a month or year or decade.

Never. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender.

I'm glad your whole-ass article on Bert Breer's fever dream did so well.
I wouldn't say it did "well". I would say it ended up being a bizarre result of an unintended social experiment.

I was kinda hoping that Reiss would get caught up in all the ESPN cutbacks so he could work at a local media outlet. Sometimes I think he gets lost amid the vastness of ESPN. He is REALLY the best of the best.

He said his knee is 100%? I’ll go back and read it.

Okay, I read the article again. “I don’t think my knee is a ticking time bomb,” Smith-Schuster said, responding specifically to the notion it could explode at any point. “If anything, it’s something that’s getting stronger every day.”

Nothing about that says to me his knee is 100%.
