Jakobi Meyers ▣ Free Agency

Or let him go and put his money to a true number 1, not sure of the free agent market so I'm not sure who's available.
Jakobi Meyers is available on the free agent market!

Let's face it, we'll have an improved passing game because of Bill O'Brien, because of Tyqun growing more after his rookie year, BUT we're not going to have improved receivers UNLESS a couple of truly nutty things happen: #1 either someone trades us their top WR like Jerry Jeudy for a 2nd rounder or else we draft someone like Josh Downs in the 2nd and he immediately starts producing.

So the question is really not a matter of upgrading our WRs (because it's is going to be extremely difficult to do that) but rather keeping what we had last year and hoping that Mac Jones settles down under Bill O'Brien and more competent tackles in front of him.

It would be ideal to keep him and draft a good receiver on a rookie contract.

Y'all keep talking about his ceiling, and yet in 4 years, all he's done is get better every year. Comparing him to Hogan is a joke. For that matter, he's better than Amendola as well. And there isn't another receiver on the roster who Jones has shown the slightest chemistry with. But sure, dump him and take another shot in the draft.
This. I was going to say he’s not necessarily a number one (obviously) but he’s as good or better than Amendola, and certainly less injury prone.

In FA? Not really anybody. Build through the draft. Need to apply the money towards special players.

So why wouldn't you pay him?
Great question, especially since he's been my binkie since his 1st TC. It's because I'm really cheap and also think we can build through the draft. I also have a thing for top end speed (which isn't anywhere close to the most important to be a successful WR), and he definitely doesn't have it.

Edit: After his 2nd year (with Cam), I was imploring the Pats to sign him to a cheap-ish long term deal like a 5yr25mil (which would basically be a 3yr20mil from this point), but it sounds like at least one of the parties wasn't having it. If Breer is correct in that he thinks Jakobi's getting 3yr22.5mil, then I'd be psyched to keep him, but imho, he should be getting way more than that.

The question is absolutely about upgrading our WRs though...

the answer is how much risk are you willing to accept in order to do that... Re-sign him is low risk, moderate rewards... Targeting Tee Higgins or DeAndre Hopkins via trade is high risk / high reward because you have no guarantee of landing either & you let your best guy go

My problem is I will not give up that #1

We haven't picked this high in 14 years.

Tee Higgins is great but he's not worth 5 years of a rookie contract for a Pro Bowl level CB or LT.

No one. And if there were, Bill would never pay the 25-30 mil it would take.

You keep him and draft someone. Otherwise, you're massively weakening the team.

That's why I mentioned keeping him and drafting someone that's good, if possible.

You have to cross your fingers though. Hope Josh Downs is available in the 2nd and that he becomes a Stefon Diggs type, or Kayshon Boutte or Jalin Hyatt. But you're still just hoping and crossing fingers that these guys will be good.

Hope is NOT a plan.

IMO. Belichick will not count on finding his #1 WR for 2023 in the 2nd Round.

If he's giving up the #1 pick, he's giving away the one thing all our competition has been using to get better. A top 15 player with a cheap 5 year contract.

It's the one thing we haven't had.

A top WR with a big contract is NOT the final piece of this puzzle.

There was talk last year, that Belichick wanted to get faster of offense & maybe that contributed to the Thornton pick.

If he wants a quick / fast team, than I don’t see Meyers as an option despite his production. Meyers is currently our #1 & despite his production he no #1 and he should not be paid more than a #3, slot receiver gets.

The Patriots paid Nelson Agholor an AAV of $15 million before the new TV deals, and few if any saw him as a number 1 receiver. So, why wouldn’t the Pats pay their best receiver for the last 3 seasons and the best FA receiver on the market a $18 million AAV?
The Pats paid Nelson Agholor $11m/year, not $15m.

Saw this linked above... Figured Jakobi deserved his own thread...

thats a big contract for him, but that is the market for comparable wrs...

Is that too big? Would we be better re-signing him? Or give up some draft picks and cap cash to go after trade bait receivers like Tee Higgins or the lesser talented Jerry Juedy? Any other guys that could targeted?

.
He may find himself surprised.. Edelman went through the same thing in his FA period. He's a fine player in our system, he makes great catches, he's a 1st down machine.. he may find he's valued more in NE than elsewhere... I'm rooting for Jakobi hope he stays!!

Yeah I have a tough time with this. He’s not a “number 1 WR” but he is a guy who plays a critical role on the offense, and has done it well, which is worth a lot. Problem is that some team(s) may offer him WR1 money which would be irresponsible to match.

Let’s see if perhaps Bill and company can offer him a lower total value but higher guaranteed deal and retain him at a reasonable value. We know Jakobi isn’t a diva who wants to flaunt a huge AAV figure even if it’s based on void years and fake money, he most likely just wants security. I just learned today that his agent is Drew Rosenhaus, whom Bill has notoriously been ably to hammer out deals with, so that makes me feel a little more positive.

IMO Meyers plays a crucial role similar to what we had with Hogan. He's not a WR1 and should never be put in that position but he's very valuable as that WR2 possession move the chains guy. This is a player we need if we don't have that reliable slot WR that we have had in the past. WR1 needs to draw double teams on occasion for this to work. I really hope Meyers is re-signed.

At some level I’m curious what the offense looks like if they just run it back with Parker as the number 1, Meyers as the 2, Bourne as the 3 and Thornton rotating in but with a real OC this time. It’s not a bad group… Parker is a weak 1 but he flashed periodically, he just needs to stay healthy.

I thought that was going to happen in 2022. I think that is the optimal config. Let's see what happens in 2023.
