Mac Jones working out with Nic Shimonek on his strength and conditioning

I have a confession to make....

I've been sleeping with Mac Jones

Why even bother trading Mac Jones? He's in the third year of his rookie contract and only costs the Patriots $4.2 million for 2023. Even if they go out and get a veteran who could start, Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe make for solid depth in the QB room.

It is not at all clear that Mac Jones is a franchise QB. He had a good rookie season, declined and clashed with his coaches in year two. He's got a .500 record as a starter. He's not even Andy Dalton at this point in his NFL career. If there were a trade, the best one could hope for in exchange for Mac Jones is a fifth or sixth rounder and a maybe a mid-level veteran. He's got two years on his rookie deal which makes him financially attractive, but if you're the GM of the next team, your still looking at a huge question mark.
Agree.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the offensive coaching staff being overhauled with a proven OC and upgraded positional coaches. I'd like to see the Patriots bring in a guy like Derek Carr and let the three of them compete for the starting position now that Bill O'Brien will be have a big say in who to keep.
Acquiring somebody like Carr & the salary cap commitment that would follow him would hamstring the FO's efforts to improve the team in other areas, unfortunately.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Patriots need to make big improvement on the offensive line. Use the #14 overall pick to get the best guy on the board and got get a free agent starter with the cap money they have for 2023. Ideally a G-C and an OT who are ready to start to give the QB and that great RB group the time they need to do their best.
Paris Island Johnson (likely already gone), Peter Skoronski (probably gone, especially if his arms measure > 33"), Broderick Jones & Anton Harrison are the names to watch in the first round... All should be capable of being NFL Left Tackles and early-season starters.

If Jones is the back up, they have to trade him.

Derek Carr definitely isn't coming here. He has plenty of teams that will hand him the starting QB job without competition. He isn't coming here to compete with Mac Jones. Plus he isn't coming the Patriots after flaming out in the same system in Las Vegas.

Mac Jones is going to be the starter. People need to accept that.

But what if Zappy out-performs Mac in TC & in pre-season games the way Mac out-performed Cant Newton?

I don’t think Zappe will outplay Mac the way Mac did with Cam. But if he does…he should start. I think BB will start Zappe game 1 if that’s the case. That’s big with BB and if he gives Mac a pass…the players will see that and won’t be cool with it. If suddenly Zappe gets the Foxboro flu after preforming better then Mac…that will be another WTF for the players.

If I remember correctly, O'Brien made a comment to the effect of, "whoever the quarterback is" when discussing the Patriots offense heading into next season. I think that's a good indication that it's wide open, as it should be.

If it's open season I know who's my $$$$$ is on.

If Zappe is outperforming Mac, then the Patriots need to draft a new QB ASAP because that would mean they don't have one.

On the topic of rooting against players on the team, I assume the regular crowd will be out en masse to shout-down this post ... right?

And that’s how should be. If it’s too close to call going into game one then the job is Mac’s but he needs to keep the petal to the metal.

?

I'm not rooting against anyone. If Mac isn't the guy they need to find someone else who is. There's no evidence it's Zappe nor that Zappe is better than Mac.

If that’s the case then they will trade for Stidham. They are getting Jimmy G.

I did an edit @sb1

there is no evidence that zappe is not the guy either

I'd say 1 good game out of 4 in his backup stint is evidence he's a decent backup option at best, nothing more.

then we know that mac is not the answer too because he has started more games with more experience and was only marginally better in the same offense
