Said they spent to the cap each of those years.
That's not the same as saying 27th in cash spending though. Kraft knew what he meant. I was pissed we hardly spend in '22. That was a mistake. Kraft obviously told him to make it work w/ what he had in the cap (no more cash up front).

Barmore and Godchaux trash?
All I know is the staple of the patriots d has been we can always stop the runZ hasn’t been the case last three years. Barmore I like, everyone else ? Ehhhh

And in my opinion, it’s a personnel problem. We have a trash interior d line, slow linebackers and a secondary without a #1 cb. Coaching has been fine based on what we have.
D-line could be upgraded from Guy. Godchaux would be next in line to be replaced. Barmore needs to take off his diapers and become a starter. Need at least one off ball LB that can be more disruptive going sideline to sideline. Bentley and Tavai are serviceable reserves. Defense needs at least one outside CB that can slow down opposing WR's. Asking for a "shut down CB" is unrealistic as they don't exist consistently in todays game. I'd like to see Jack Jones cement himself as the #2 outside guy. Need a FS to replace Devin McCourty if he retires.

But he did say they spent to the cap in the clarification.

People think it’s absolutely necessary to keep him. If he’s been involved in d and it’s been so bad, then why?he gets credit for the good parts, but not the blame for the bad?
Mayo said he did the coordinating and Stephen the play calling. @patfanken said that the coordinating was a big deal. Play calling can be done by anyone, I guess.

Right. All teams spend to the cap. They have to. It's the cash flow that matters to the Owner. That's why teams like NO and Rams are in trouble, they kept borrowing from the future to stay under the cap.

Wow. Another first. Bill issuing a retraction or clarification. Yea, that definitely pissed off Mr. Kraft. He's talking about guarantees, which is the cash the Owner has to pay up front. Being 27th in a 3 yr span says, we're cheap.
That 3 year span includes 2020 where they were so slammed with dead money that they couldn’t hardly do anything at all, 2021 where they spent more than anyone else, and 2022 where they were reeling a bit from what they spent in 2021. So overall it adds up to a low figure across 3 years. It makes sense. Bill could’ve worded it better, but I don’t know the context of the question he was asked to give that response either.

I personally felt like they could have done more in 2022 but it is what it is.

How's the defense done against good starting QBs over the past 2 seasons?

So I ask this question, and it gets a poster with an "I don't agree" emoji response.

He was asked about the record spending in '21 vs poor results.

I haven't played football since my freshman year in high school, but I imagine it commands more respect when you are actually being coached by a former player.

Agreed, especially during a coach's first decade or so if he wasn't a former player like Mayo, Vrabel & Dan Campbell were.

Mayo will be a better HC than Vrabel...

Based on...?

Who knows, maybe Bill retires from coaching, but keeps the GM role.

I'd rather see Bill continue coaching and "retire" from the GM role, if I had to choose one or the other for him.

My personal perceived amateur evaluation of his performance as a player and coach, leadership qualities, and understanding of the game.

In other words, my opinion.... which I don't expect to be the most respected on this forum.
I agree with you. Players have raved about him. I've watched him in several interviews. Carries himself well, looks confident. Bill loves him and respects him.

Mayo is old school but realizes these younger players are "different" and you can't just be a hard ass. Mayo said that Bill doesn't micro manage, that he lets the D staff do their job. He said Bill was even teaching him some FO stuff. He's more than ready to take the next step.

If he's not calling plays, how do you blame him for bad defensive play calls?

This is such a bizarre press release. It smacks of desperation. Clearly Kraft knows that the Patriots fans as a group are bitterly disappointed and pissed.
I just hope there is some meat on this bone they threw to us.
They must be pretty confident they will be able to reach an agreement with Mayo. If they don't this "announcement" will make them look even worse.

Interviewing "OC candidates"....this does not sound like BB talking. The PR side of the team must be worried that as other teams like the Jets announce they are looking for a new OC and /or teams announce interviews with big name OC candidates that the fans frustration will grow to epic proportions.

Clearly the team leaked info to Curran for his article and they realized that was not enough meat on the bone. So they throw this bone out there to the ravenous fans before there are large numbers giving up on the ship as they watch wild card weekend.

They must have someone in mind for the OC position, but can not release that information.
