Mac: "I want to be coached harder"

Sorry Ian but this is more excuses. Once he reaches the second level, he's dealing with DBs that aren't any bigger than he is. We don't have any DBs that are taller than he is and only Dugger outweighs him by 3 #s. Hamlin and Poyer are =<200 #s. This is football, you can't give up 1 yard short of the 1st down marker in a critical moment in the game.
I also don't think it matters, @venecol. I just feel like if things keep going the way they're going, I think things come to a head this offseason, and barring major changes, I really don't know how this one resolves itself.

Not only shouldn't I ever agree with you, nobody should, but this time you're actually right. Like him or not, this is going down the wrong road, looking for a problem with how he's coached.

It's also in line with the "bad coaching" narratives flying around up there and I don't like the idea that "the noise" has that easy a path to the QB
I would agree except Mac is right. This is probably the worst coached year of the Belichick regime. You can see it on the field. Jones doesn’t have a QB coach and the offense doesn’t have an OC.

Corky's part of the Grand Slam of Suck too. He's doing things - bad things - on the field that have little to do with his coaches or his offensive Line or Nelson Agholor, at least not directly.
Some yes.. partly to blame. No one is perfect. But he is not having any opportunity to do things he is good at. So obviously he looks worse than he is supposed to . You can't have a carpenter do a neurosurgeons job and vice versa.

Mac's strength is his cerebral power and processing different formations and executing creative and different play calls. Unfortunately in the name of simplification Patricia is running flag football schemes in nfl. Patricia and team are making Mac beat teams with his arm or short obvious dump offs which make him look worse than he should .

Read kurt Warner's article. Found it to be pretty relevant . This is on Bill and Matt

I like Mac in general.

However, he does seem to have two issues... one of which can be coached... one I'm not sure.

The first is situational awareness. The grounding he took at the 1 yard line... he could have just fallen to the ground, taken the sack, but not cost the team a down. Also the mega sack in the red zone.

The other... and I hate to say this... is a certain level of, I guess, fearlessness. That he seems to lack. Kind of reminds me of Tony Eason in that way. I don't know if that can be coached up.

That said, I saw a lot less of that fear last year. In fact, not much at all. So maybe that is coaching... or more confidence in the OL... or just being happy to be on the Pats ans an rookie and ready to do whatever. And maybe it's too much thinking. Who knows. I hope he can turn it around.
Mac's problem imo is he played with elite talent at Alabama and cannot adjust to subpar protection given to him now. As a rookie he said it was fun to take hits, which is silly to say. Now after getting popped a few times it appears he feels pain in both of his legs and doesn't seem too willing to stand in the pocket without panicking. Everyone has bumps and bruises but it is clear to be limiting him and affecting his decision making. He scrambled without fear his rookie year and now he doesn't with some cowardly slides we've seen this year.

I'm not 100% sold that Matt Patricia's offense cannot be successful in the nfl, but it is clear that it won't work with Mac. We need more than just passes to Rhamondre and Meyers that often do not go past the sticks. I want him to succeed but it doesn't feel possible. It feels no different than waiting for Harry to turn it around and many others etc.

I think we are already there, Ian.

Thursday night was the breaking point for a confluence of issues these last 2 years

-Stupid play on the field
-Bad coaching/clock management
-High draft picks and expensive FAs not playing to their paycheck or draft status
-Bad offense
-Not competitive with upper eschelon teams

There is no way Bob is letting Bill spend $100m on FAs this off-season and Fat Matt coaching them.

No chance (unless they win the Super Bowl...maybe)

I must have brought this up 100 times during that draft.

The biggest difference makers in college football are OL and Kickers. That's where you see the biggest gaps in talent between teams. QB are the most important position but the drop off isn't nearly as big as it is with those other positions.

His OL helped him out and made him look better than guys like Waddle, Smith and Jeudy. That corp is great but his OL was absolutely dominant. You could count on one hand how many times they broke down that year.

That's the biggest issue we're seeing . Mac needs top tier protection > top tier targets. Although we need to upgrade there as well. Mac just isn't equipped to deal with messy pockets.

Like I said last week, we've seen "simple" schemes be very successful in this league for decades. You don't need to be a mad genius designing plays. That would help but again guys like Kubiak, Shanahan called like 10 plays their entire career. I mean we've seen straight running offenses have major success like Tennessee, Balty and others. You don't need Gruden or Payton calling plays. You'll never win with a guy like Mac with sub-par protection. Not happening.

Fix the OL is priority #1 imo. Doesn't matter if Sean Payton was calling plays this year. That OL has to be fixed. I'm definitely not MP fan and wouldn't mind a serious, established OC at all but the OL is fix #1.

That was excellent. Thanks.

He's detailed and objective in his analysis. Doesn't object with the play calls despite being simple, just the details to create more spacing. Has issues with Mac's tentative decisions, his mechanics but also praises a lot of his plays. Good watch.

Hire Warner as QB Coach and fire Judge.

My friend Kevin had a pretty crazy idea.
Trade for Sean Payton bring back Brady..

Unless you're Mahomes, Allen, or Lamar, you need have a solid offensive line to win games. The focus on free agency and the draft this year should be at least 3 offensive linemen. Mike McGlinchey, Elgton Jenkins, Orlando Brown Jr, and Jack Conklin are good options if the price is right. I knew Trent Brown was going to have a subpar year when he tweeted when the team was doing joint practices with the Raiders that "he wanted to go home." Dude doesn't care anymore - he has a ring and he just wants money without putting in any effort.

Yes, let's sign Brady to a 4 year contract until he's 50...

I wonder if this will be a 94-95 redux.

10-6
5-11

....and Tuna can't pick the groceries in 96

Will Bob let Bill pick the groceries in 2023?

Brady hasn't done much with TWO stud WRS. The play calling there is also pretty suspect.

Brown already has money as well. His play has been uneven but not horrible. He's fine for what they pay him.

I run 6 plays, split V, it's like novacaine, just give it time it always works.

How about you buckle up your overalls and play better.

How about they coach him from the bench the next 2-3 games?

Further confirmation of poor play design and a poorly coached quarterback. By saying he wants to be coached "harder,"what Mac's really trying to say is he wants to be coached BETTER. Everything Warner points out can be rectified by an OC and a QB coach who know what the hell they're doing. No way should BB be allowed to bring Patricia and Judge back next year in their current roles. This season has been wasted by those two schmucks and by BB for not making needed changes when things first went haywire.
