Pre Game Thread- Pats @ Jets

I think it's performance related. He did emphasize the fact that a full workload is necessary and seemed to understand that the split reps may have been an issue.

"I think it's more important when you haven't played in a while," said Belichick on Thursday. "It's always important, but when you've been out for a while, getting the timing and execution back is important for you and your teammates - at any position."
It did seem like he was a hair off with a couple guys on Monday. That deep pass to Thornton (who he hasn't actually gotten to play live game reps with yet) was just off his fingertips.

Barmore missing not good for this Defense Jets Traded for RB Robinson who's not Hall but can also run and catch. We are an absolute joke on the edge Monday night any RB with just the title could have exploited us. I hope this is not the new norm we don't have an Offense that can carry a Bad Defense.

I find this rather interesting. Do they just think Mac needs to perform better, or does this go deeper than that?

I think it's rather obvious (to me, at least).

Jones hasn't performed well this season. Zappe came in and did a better job. Jones, given the injury, his captaincy, and leadership, is getting the opportunity to respond.

If he continues to play as he has, I have a hunch he won't be starting past the bye.

I think Phil Perry read into it too much. Bill confirmed Mac is healthy, got the full practice reps and is the starter. They then asked if Mac is going to be the starter going forward and Bill said he doesn't do hypotheticals. Media turned it into "Mac has to continue to earn his role."

It's not just Perry. Curran (who has been a vocal Jones proponent) had the same takeaway from BB's presser. His opinion is that BB feels Jones hasn't been good enough and this is his opportunity to raise the level.

Thanks, I really hate when they read into the quote and then their own analysis of the quote somehow becomes the quote itself.
Hearing it/seeing it also provides some context. But I did find it interesting that he mentioned the workload and the continuity angle, which sort of also coincides with Jones saying after the game how important a routine is for him. Sort of wonder if the two talked and Belichick felt they needed to just commit to the kid and give him a real chance to redeem himself.

Definitely makes you wonder if he hit that throw, how much might that have changed things? Hindsight is always fun like that

I think BB knows he did Jones dirty on Monday night. Toss that whole thing out, wipe the slate clean, take him off the injury report to silence that chatter, and give him a week or two without intervention to see how things go.

If we get status quo, I don't think he starts the rest of the season. If he elevates his game and plays considerably better, he'll continue to get the opportunity.

Let's not pin this on the media, though. This is a BB-inspired thing. He was definitive about Brady during the JAG era. He was definitive about Newton during the Cam error. His choosing not to be definitive about Jones might just be nothing, but it stands in stark contrast to the examples I mentioned, and that's naturally going to lead to speculation.

For sure! Thornton is seriously roasting his man on almost every play, I think Mac really needs to rep with him... Mac has shown he throw it further this year, they just need to be on the same page. A couple successfully deep ones to Thornton a game will loosen up the rest of the field for everyone else...

That ball lead Thornton which is what you want that was good throw the Defender had no chance to get it. Mac needs to throw more of those really hope his full load in practice translates on Sunday.

I hope they target WR Mecole Hardman in the offseason and pair him with T Thornton next year great speed on Offense.

Good point, and you're probably right. My thing was that I don't think Twitter (and especially Perry's post) always lends itself to being clear what is speculation and what Bill came out and said.

THIS.

I am telling you right now, if you are right this is the last year Belichick is going to be the Patriots' head coach. I am telling you. That is a crossing a huge redline for an owner with a head coach especially with a future Hall of Famer in Belichick.
I apologize if my interpretation of reality conflicts with the demigod image of Bill many of you have constructed in your minds. But, at this point, Bill needs Bob far more than Bob needs him.

Belichick is not starting over elsewhere as if anyone else would want to hire a prickly, diva 71 year old as their HC anyway. No one else would let him chose a trusted assistant as his successor or continue the coaching careers of his sons.

Bill is acting nobly here. He’s trying to rebuild this thing before exiting and keep the organization of people he’s built here over the last 20+ years gainfully employed after he departs.

Bill doesn't need anyone anymore. His legacy is secure and he has more money than God.

His preference is to stay in Foxboro so his kids can continue to establish their careers.

If they part ways there are 10 teams who will line up and ask him to be their President of Football Operations.

Belichick is a rich 70 year old who could easily get a studio job the second he leaves football. And if he was free to go to another team, there would be plenty of teams fighting over themselves for him. Don't kid yourself.

And besides, I don't care if he had a thousand options or no options, when an owner starts to dictate how you run your team on game day is when you leave the organization.

Besides, Kraft already learned his less with Parcells. He doesn't interfere with the day to day operations of football team like that. He would never dictate who starts. If he did and it got out, what coach would ever want to coach for him again? If he is telling Belichick who to start, what is a first time hotshot head coach going to think would happen to him if he struggles.

And he thinks Mac Jones isn't starting worthy and he knows the owner is choosing Jones over him, how does Belichick think he is ever going to rebuild this team? If he cannot even choose his own starting QB, what is the point of trying to rebuild this team? Why not just go to another team that will give him complete authority of his game day roster?

Kraft allowed Belichick to give Patricia and Judge control of the offense with no experience. Which he kinda questioned publicly. And he is going to tell Belichick who to start at QB? If Kraft does interfere, it will be after the season and will be him telling Belichick he needs to hire an experienced OC.

Kamu Griger-Hill anyone?

We could use him with Dugger out and our OLBs looking slow. He ran a 4.45 40 before we drafted him/cut him years ago....

Bill did not step in. He was stepped on. Patricia and Judge don’t burp without Bill’s permission. Bill wanted Zappe too. Ownership wanted Jones. We get Jones.
I dislike when people pick a narrative based on their hunch or the narrative they want to believe and state it as fact. And it’s become really common.

How do you know this? What information do you have to state those claims?
