Nun I hated the pick at the time wanted another WR but Zappe did pass the Patriots' vaunted interview process with flying colors. That has to count for something when trying to get him up to Game speed.
LOL so did N'keal harry! :haha:

But to be fair, what choice do we have now with Hoyer taking a concussion, the safest thing is to play Zappe next week and hope he doesn't look absolutely awful against the Lions. The good thing for Zappe is that he'll be facing the #32 defense in the league. But the bad thing is that the Lions are also the #1 offense in the league. I don't think he'll be able to hang in a shootout.

That's my immediate fears too.

It's a myth that teams need to start a guy before they know if they are good or not. If Zappe goes out there, it's because they already think he has something that can help them win. If he doesn't, they already know he doesn't. We did this song and dance with Stidham two years ago. The coaches knew he wasn't it and were proven right whenever they relented and gave him some time in a game. McDaniels had to basically spell it out to everyone that they knew what they had in him.

There is nothing to find out for the coaches besides if they already think he has something if it translates under pressure. If they think he's not there yet, it just not going to show up on game day.
The frustrating thing is the fact the coaching staff knows what they got. Which has repeatedly been backups who cannot win games. I understand the salary cap and all that, but I see other teams fielding capable backups that actually win a game or two.

Is Brissett the last backup to win a game for the Pats?

Not sure why Hoyer’s last X number of games “as a starter” record is relevant to this discussion. Those games were almost all played with different franchises composed of entirely different talent levels and with entirely different coaching and offensive systems, spread out across a span of 5 years. How is that relevant to today?

If you actually look at his record and look at the two years immediately preceding the No Good Very Bad 0-11 Run (spread out across 4 different franchises), you’ll see he went 7-6 as a starter with Cleveland in 2014 and 5-4 with Houston in 2015. Somehow that doesn’t apply though.
This is exactly why we need Bledsoe to suit up. Dude won 11 games in 1996. Seems like a no-brainer.

He is. But to be fair, QB is already a shallow position. The fact is there isn't ever a year with 32 teams with a capable starter. There's going to be some teams with diamond in the rough back ups and some teams with absolute trash. There was a period in the late 2000's/early 2010's where the Patriots happened to have Cassell to at least hold things steady when Brady went down and the Colts basically went YOLO and decided if Manning went down their season would be over and then when he did go down they only won 2 games because they had two guys who didn't belong in the league.

Also not to "go there" but this is giving me a greater appreciation of Brady. The last few times he hasn't been the assumed starter we have 2016 where Jimmy G couldn't go two full games without getting hurt, in 2020 Cam had his Covid issues and missed time, and in 2022 in Mac's second year he got injured and needed to miss multiple games. Aside from the big 2008 injury and the suspension, from 2001-2019 you could pretty much rest easy knowing Brady was going to be available.

Is it fair at this point to question how the staff saw Hoyer as the better option to win games?

Just imagine some here wanted poodle arm Ahoyyyyyy over Zappe?

If you bench Zappe he possibly will sit the rest of the year until preseason next year. To me he is showing what the Belichick offense should look like. He is making smart decisions with the football, throws to the sticks, reads the field well, takes coaching advice openly. I mean he got the entire offense envolved like Brady did. No favorites, just the open guy. He looks off safeties and throws darts. Tough decision coming. To me Hoyer is not the backup anymore. Zappe has proved his worth today to me. I mean i hate to say it but; Brady like performance?

I watched him play. I noticed that the Patriots have Hoyer as the backup, not Zappe. Stidham was the backup over Hoyer, after all. Do you think BB doesn't know his QBs anymore?

I'm fine, thanks. It's good to see that the kid hasn't soiled himself, and has pulled a bit of a JAG (terrible in offseason, looking better in regular season).

Don't worry. Be Zappe!

Min. 6 att, he's leading the league in completion percentage last year and this year. He also had the best preseason out of the 3, imho. The problem is he can't stay on the field. I expected him to last maybe 3 games tops before his expiration date, but that milk soured quickly.
