Hoyer is 1-18, as a starter, since 2016. Go with the kid if Mac is out for an extended length of time.
If Hoyer were 0-400 in his career as a starter, that still wouldn't mean Zappe's shown a higher ceiling. That's the problem with the whole "Play Zappe!" argument. Zappe's shown nothing to indicate that he's an NFL-level QB at this time.

Now, if they do put him in, maybe a light will go on and he'll show something then. But, to date, he's shown nothing.

And the people who are crying about Jones' arm will really ramp up the tears if the rookie starts chucking balloons out there.

He’s shown nothing in general. That’s the point. He’s a rookie. You know what you have in Hoyer. You don’t know what you have in Zappe outside of an appeal to an authority who has assembled the current roster.

Hoyer chucks up moon balls, too. It’s not a good situation to be in either way.

Right. This isn’t like Hoyer or Stidham where you knew Stidham is trash and at least Hoyer probably wouldn’t turn the ball over. This is where we know what we have in Hoyer and we don’t know what we have in Zappe. Zappe needs to start if Mac misses time. If he sucks? Put Hoyer in. But you need to go with the higher ceiling guy. That’s Zappe.
Exactly. Curious why some would prefer predictable suckage in Hoyer than go with someone who could offer upside. It’s a VERY low bar for Zappe to be a better option. It’s not like he needs to light it up out of the gate to give them a better chance to win.

We saw Zappe in the exhibition games, against lesser competition. Did he ever look NFL ready to you?

I -probably unfairly-remember the KC game and hold it against Hoyer. I definitely unrealistically hope that Zappe comes on and is an unexpected phenom.

But Hoyer has lasted in the league a long time and Zappe showed in preseason that he still needs a lot of seasoning, so it’ll be Brian starting. I wonder if someone like Bortles or Glennon is even signed to fill the spot if Jones goes on IR. Slim pickings on the free agent market now.

Neither JAG nor Cassel looked good in exhibition games, either. They both did fine here when they were called. Look, I’m not saying that Zappe will be the next Brady. I’m just saying that, if Mac is gone for an extended period of time, I’d rather go with the unknown rookie than the veteran who is on a 17-game losing streak.

And I'm saying that you don't go to the non-NFL-ready QB until you're at the point where you're throwing in the towel on the season.

How do you know Zappe is any less NFL-ready than Hoyer? Hoyer is 1-17 in his last full season’s worth of NFL starts. Zappe has never taken an NFL snap. If the kid stinks up the joint, you can still insert Hoyer. But all this talk is for nothing since it looks like it’s going to be Hoyer regardless.

Hoyer has lost his last 17 starts

It doesn't make it any less terrible, but the fact is, it's been 11 straight starts, not 17.

I'd rather have Hoyer be out there as a sacrificial lamb on the road in Lambeau (assuming he doesn't surprise the >70%), then give Zappe his first opportunity at home (where the ringing in his head in addition to the crowd won't be as loud) against the Lions. TB12's 1st reg season snaps were against the Lions.

I want Zappe because 21 years ago a late round rookie QB replace an injured 1st round pick and I want history to repeat itself.

Like this idea. Might be better on Zappe’s psyche if it’s atleast slightly more gradual. Have him prepare this week knowing he’s the primary backup but could come in anytime. Then next week inch his reps up and make it more clear he’ll lead the way.

No and that was against the 3rd string defense, don' t want to see him on the road against the starters. Just not fair for him.

It's going to be Hoyer, so not really a discussion worth having (until Hoyer's bad play becomes impossible for the coaches to ignore).
Will that be after the first or second series in Green Bay?

I watched him play. I noticed that the Patriots have Hoyer as the backup, not Zappe. Stidham was the backup over Hoyer, after all. Do you think BB doesn't know his QBs anymore?

I think Zappe will be playing sooner rather than later Hoyer cannot take a Big hit and he'll get one sooner with this current OL and Andrews.

Hoyer will start for Mac which *may* result is mediocrity if we are lucky. If he stinks, Zappe may play *if* Bill doesn't sign Cam or whatever free agent is available.

Matt Groh seemed particularly pleased with the Zappe pick...

LOL, what is this nonsense? Come on, now. You’re better than that. I don’t even need to take yet another thread here off track with the obvious. I can just point out that this is an appeal to authority.

It's not an appeal to authority, in the sense you're indicating. It's an appeal to what we've seen specifically out of this head coach. What we've seen with BB is the willingness to do 2 things at the QB position, when he's felt he had the QBs to do it:

  1. Cut bait early
  2. Elevate others over Hoyer
