Pats Rebuild Intermittent View of Progress

The defense wasnt good in 05. Injuries didn’t help though
Thats not a down year.

They were still a playoff team which made it to the AFC divisionals

Not rooting for him to fail. Would love to be proven wrong. This preseaon he has regressed. Looks skittish in the pocket, indecisive, poor decisions and vision. Last year he did great against crappy teams but struggled mightily against good defenses and at the end of the year.
What elite skills does he have?
The eye test says he will be a middle of the pack qb.
Now if you put him behind a top 5 OL he will execute better
A top 5 OL is not walking through the pats locker room for at least another 3 years.

Then your “ eyes” have failed you Sam. By all accounts Jones had one of the best rookie seasons of any QB in NFL history. You guys desperately want to disregard that because you didn’t believe he could do that, and you don’t believe he can be a championship QB going forward. So don’t pretend he is failing, because he isn’t, you guys just want him to so you can say “ I told you,” and so he will be replaced by a future binkie.

I’m interested to see how it plays out too. And your approach is fine, wait it out. I don’t think it is absurd to have any sort of judgement beforehand.

There has been word from reporters of struggles (to say the least) with the offense, questionable buy in from top offensive players and split/uncertain offensive duties being assigned to two different coaches who have never coached an offense. Both of those coaches were embarrassing failures when they were handed the full reign to teams.

Maybe Bill is a genius and it will all work out, it certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility. but I’m doubtful.

to be fair the role of coaching assistant, coordinator or positional coach is dramatically different than being the Head Coach who has all accountability for football operations

Well first off sports local radio is not just hosts speaking from opinions for ratings. Theses are reports coming back from reporters in the lock room. You gonna tell me someone like Tom Curran isn't reliable now?

Well we may never know the full true, but there's enough reports and stories out there that you can safely say the head coach didn't want the QB back..

How it works: one of them gets an idea about something that might be possible and would be newsworthy in their world. The veracity ranges from a single direct source close to team, or just something they make up. They utter it on Twitter or a radio show. To avoid being responsible for stating something that turns out to not be true, they'll often use a cowardly preamble of things like, "I don't know, people are saying" or "That's what's out there, don't know if it is true" or "there are some who say it, I don't know how many" and using "if" to start a statement of fact. Then it becomes an echo chamber, and suddenly its true - lots of people are saying it, and "where there's smoke, there's fire." Soon, someone posts it on Pats fans and it becomes an assumed truth around here.

Those were not down years. They were contenders.
Was 2021 a "down" year? Being considered likely to get tot he AFC Championship Game at the middle of the season says "no", as well as the fact they were always in contention for a playoff spot.

2021 was not a down year either as it's a new era of Patriot football and they are rebuilding.

Personally, I believe a team can only have a down year if an annual solid track-record has been established and the negative result is a significant deviation from normal performance.

For instance, if Alabama goes to the TaxSlayer Bowl then that is a down year.

2002 was not a down year as it was a miracle they won in 2001.

You could argue 2009 was a down year. Maybe.

From a franchise standpoint the only real down year was 2020.

The Pats are old and getting older. Bad drafts and bad team building do not bode well for the Pats.

Do you realize that Mac Jones is younger than most of the 2022 draft class? Almost all of them are 24, meaning be the time they finish their rookie deals they will all be staring at the wrong side of 30! With COVID, everyone got another year of eligibility, Wydermyer is actually the youngest guy on the team at 21. Jabril Peppers is 26 going into his 6th year in the league!

Onwenu, going into his 3rd year, is actually six months YOUNGER than Strange!

The only potential young stars on the Pats roster are Mac and Barmore (both 23 BTW), other than that, the Pats are going to need a whole new cast moving forward. This will be the last year for McCourty (although he will cost $10 mil against the 2023 cap), Slater, Wynn, etc.

In fact, the Pats are scheduled to have 36 guys on the current roster, enter free agency next year!!

The rebuild has yet to begin, the Pats lost out on a shot to get another good young player when they traded down and drafted a 3rd 24 year old, Div 3 guard in the first round instead of making a pick at #21. Again, the BEST the Pats can hope for is a wash with trading Mason and drafting Strange (that's not counting the draft capital lost). That pick will set the Pats back even further. Maybe Thorton can come back in year 2, (he is only 22) and break out, but that's it, 3 guys under 24 with potential.

Hopefully BB doesn't squander the top ten pick this year will result in.

Is the rebuild proceeding on track or are we looking at a very long process.
In my view the rebuild is successful when we can honestly say at the start of the season that the Patriots are one of the top 10 teams and a legitimate super bowl contender.

Clearly we are not there yet, In my view you need an elite QB to be a serious SB contender. I do not think MJ is an elite QB and not sure he will ever reach that status. Great guy, great attitude...but...I would rather have Kenny Pickett to be honest with you.

If by 5 years post Brady (2024-2025 season) we reach serious SB contender status again, the rebuild has been successful. If not, that might be the time for BB to retire.
Every year is a new beginning and has been since Bill got here. I don't expect that to change and I wouldn't get my hopes too high or too low.

As for MJ, I don't know if his struggles so far this preseason are on him or the coaches. It's still early.

The success of the rebuild has nothing to do with “what we can say before the year” it has everything to do with what they do on the field.

Last year they were the 1 seed with a month left. They were 1 game behind the division winner. They were a “serious contender” last year but didn’t win out. (Only 1 contender does). Year 2 was a huge success on a rebuild scale.
There is not a very big step forward needed to finish as a SB contender.

But that will be determined on the field not in someone’s mind.
There's no such thing as a rebuild. There never has been with Bill. Every season has been a new beginning. What exactly are they rebuilding from anyway? Being last year's #1 seed with a month left?

2 12-5 seasons and 1 playoff win each year does it. No reason that can’t happen.
So the Pats aren't rebuilding. I didn't think so.

They are rebuilding from Brady leaving.

It's way too early to crown Mac as the Franchise.

Shouldnt people wait until Jones can beat Buffalo first?
I thought he did beat Buffalo.

Mac Jones and a rookie WR are playoff bound?

Put the bong down.
Did you say that last season too?

Why the negativity? It's too early to give up on them.

Didn’t say I didn’t value the win, so that’s a weird statement to make. I’m simply questioning why you would say that Mac beat them. Mac perhaps had the smallest role of everyone in that game. The ground game, the wind, and the D beat the Bills. Did you just word that part poorly? Or did I miss the point?
And on the flip side the defense had a historic meltdown the next two games. I wouldn't put the win or the losses on Mac Jones.
