Is our defense this good?

Could be an immoveable object, Could be the resistable forxe.

To answer the question of whether this defense is good, the answer depends on who they play. Bill's scheme will look good against bad teams, but then the lack of talent shows up when they play teams above .500.

Aside from having "one of the best D-lineman in the NFL" in Godchaux, they only have Barmore on the D-line that's worthy of any attention. They do not have a competent off ball LB who is disruptive, travel coast to coast and most importantly reliable. They do not have a proven competent edge rusher opposite Judon. Jalen Mills should not be any team's #1 CB. I hope he's ready, because he can't hide anymore defending opposing team's lesser WR's. Jack Jones should compete for a starting job taking it from either Mills or Butler. S's are the strongest unit, but you can't put all of them out there at once.

We will see the same thing we've seen the last few years. The defense will "statistically" be good enough, but the QB will have to pass his way out of games because the lack of talent will get exposed against most competent offenses.

Interesting, that defense sure played terrible against the Titans, Bucs, Browns, and Chargers last year. If only those teams were above. 500...

The defense was missing speed at the LB positions. They have that speed now. Let's see how they do before we bury the defense during the offseason

The whole Bills punt nonsense is silly, patriots were very banged up in that game and j.c. took the day off
Nah, I think it’s one of those things that should be repeated, over and over, ideally with the Pats hearing it until they get really sick of hearing it.

Two games, they gave up 80 points, over 900 yards, and didn’t force a punt. Two games. That is epically bad and it can’t be spun by being “banged up” or having somebody out.

In both those games the slot corner, Bryant was exposed, the pass rush nonexistent and rush defense Mia.

Everything had been revamped except the DL.

? The secondary has gotten worse, and they lost all experience essentially at LB. Missing random players here and there dont mean its ok to never force a team to punt

I am worried the most about the secondary. The LBs are worrisome as well but without a true #1 corner, I have no idea how we slow down the top flying offenses. I guess we hope the DL gets home a lot which is a possibility but tough to rely on that when you play mobile QBs like Allen and Mahomes and Lamar.

They lost an all pro corner, youre betting on Jon Jones to come back and be a really good player a year after a major injury. And two rookies to hopefully play well.
It's better than the two I cited.

Malcolm Butler/Mills/Jon Jones is better than JC/Mills/Bryant?

No, but Butler/Mills/Jon Jones/Mitchell (typically 4 corners see significant snaps in a game) is better than JC/Bryant/Williams/Bethel, which is what they had in the Bills playoff game. Top end talent doesn't mean much when your weakest link is getting beat consistently. Still remains to be seen whether the depth IS better once the bullets are flying for real, but right now there is more upside on the CB2, 3, 4 than there was last year, once it was clear Gilmore wasn't playing for us.

You listed 2 mediocre players, one player who is coming off major injury and a guy that we were told wasnt good enough to play in a super bowl 5 years ago here.

Well when you look at things through those lenses, no one deserves to be in the league.

I don't view Mills as mediocre. I think he's a good player who got better as last year went on, and is better than JJ Williams.

Mitchell is a veteran of this league with 51 career starts in this league. From all accounts he's having a good camp. Regardless, he's better than Justin Bethel.

Jon Jones needs to prove he's healthy, you're right. But when he is, he's bettet in the slot than Myles Bryant.

The drop off is Jackson to Butler. No argument there, that's a big one.

The point is, they're better 2-4 than they were at the end of the year last year. Lots can happen (injuries, etc) between now and the end of THIS season, but we haven't even accounted for contributions from the rookies, and the depth SHOULD be better. How much? We'll see in September.

Jalen Mills played when they couldnt force the Bills to punt as well. The first time, not the second time. You can rave about the depth all you want, but they have no top end talent. Im sure you would agree. Them going to zone heavy with a lot of mediocrity does not seem like its going to be bringing a ton of improvement imo
