Is our defense this good?

This seems to be a popular take on here for some bizarre reason. But what do Mike Williams, Mike Evans, Brandin Cooks, DaVante Parker (twice), Stefon Diggs (3 times) D.J. Moore and Amari Cooper all have in common? All of them were held under 100 yards receiving (averaging around 55 yards per game) and they caught a whopping 1 TD COMBINED in a league dominated by passing. Jackson had a league low QB rating when thrown in his direction and only gave up 4 TD's which was among the lowest for a #1 CB and was 2nd in INT's.

Tough crowd for JC.
jackson was also a turnover machine, we will miss that this upcoming season imo.

At least the defense is not depending on rookies. Everyone is at least in their 2nd season with the Pats so familiarity should help. Also it seems like a good group of athletic guys with positive attitudes. BB must love the positive and "moldable" attitudes.
the thing is that some of the second year guys have so little game experience that they are basically like rookies from that standpoint. Jennings, McMillan, Bledsoe, Uche, Wilson, Peppers either did not play last season for us or were injured. We are counting on Mitchell (new) or two rookie CB or a Cb who did not play last season. I don't see much experience here, and practice experience is completely different. Best example is Uche. According to a lot of writers he flashed last year in TC but did not show much during the season so i don't give anything about our defense players showing flashes against our offense in TC especially with the offense learning a new system. I think the defense will be average

JC Jackson was the number 1 cb, who was not good enough to cover elite wrs, but definitely good enough to be a 1

Patriots have improved slot and safeties as well as team speed overall. They have nobody as good as Jackson, but, Jon Jones can occasionally move outside with Marcus Jones inside...also, Jack Jones may be a starting cb. Miles Bryant and jujuan Williams won't ever ha e to play...bottom of roster improvement still counts.

So far. At least at camp, it seems the loss of Jackson has not been noticed.
I mean, no one has been able to stop Parker, who isn't a true #1. That's a problem (so far). Butler had a couple of pbu on him I think but has been burned as well.

Patience...we won't know anything until probably mid October

This is right.

Although I wonder if this team can still afford to drop two to the Lions and Jags (like in 2018) in September in the spirit of an extended pre-season** and still feel pretty good about winning the whole thing in the end.

(** viewing September as an extended preseason is something WE made up on the board. I don't know how BB thinks about it. Sure he wanted to win those games too.)

What's "a true #1?" It's an imaginary designation with zero significance.

In 2020 with a healthy Ryan Fitzpatrick and Chad O'Shea at the wheel Parker was a true #1. 72 catches, 1202 yards, 9 TD's, 16.7 YPR... those are #1 numbers.

Since then it's been Tua who averaged about 5 yards a pass. With a healthy Mac, great blocking and health Parker could do it again, or be even better. He has been a force in camp, like when he put the DPOY Gilmore on roller skates and abused him.

I think people forgot how a healthy Devante Parker turned the best CB in Football at the time on the Patriots *Ahem* Stephon Gilmore like a tap.

Yes I agree that the 2nd year, and sometimes 3rd year, players do not have a lot of game experience, and that is a concern.

Having said that, the 2nd and 3rd year players 1) have an offseason conditioning program to increase their strength and weight balance (look at Mac or Rhamondre for example), 2) are familiar with the routine and surroundings (listen to Judon's comments how he is more comfortable this year knowing all the people, where to go, etc.), and 3) are knowledgeable about the playbook so they can play faster than last year. Every team has to introduce new players into "game experience", that is the nature of the NFL. I think it is better to introduce the players to that "game experience" when 1) they are in professional NFL physical shape, 2) feel comfortable with their surroundings, and 3) are familiar with the playbook.

i fully agree
i think there is a lot of uncertainty/unknown regarding our defense before we see them in actual games especially at the LB and CB position and TC performance will not be an indication imo

I agree with that as well.

What is unusual to me, for the LB position, is that we have so many 2nd and 3rd year players with limited game experience to replace Hightower, Collins, and Van Noy (3 positions). We have Uche, Jennings, McMillan, Wilson, Bentley, McGrone, and Perkins (seems like I missed one) to replace three guys, along with our strong safeties, Peppers, Duggar, Philips, and Bledsoe (seem like I am missing one again), to fill in for two guys from last year - Duggar and Philips . Who knows if the new guys will step but it seems like we have enough to improve the defense while also having reserves for injuries (all with very limited game experience). Limited game experience is the nature of the NFL. We have a plethora of guys so 1) the competition is tough which should be a huge motivator and 2) we can cover for injuries.

there are so many "new" guys i can't remember all names or numbers. This is gonne take some games.

Although it is unfamiliar, it might be a good thing. Hope all is well in Germany with the uncertainty about gas and oil.
thanks for the kind words. It's a complex situation in europe right now. The inflation rates are high, the european central bank is still a bit conservative imo. Gas for car, heating and food prices are going crazy but i think situation in germany is good. I hope all is well for you too

The defense looks like it could be deep, especially in the secondary, if young players develop like we hope.

But there is an absence of a top corner as well as impact players, even with an improved Barmore.

We will have a tough time against top passing teams.

Like JayNM said, "it's a rude awakening or surprise."

Now that we added jalen elliott and brad hawkins the answer would be yes

I am glad to hear all is well with you. I don't think the Russians are winning in Ukraine any time soon, so the energy situation will get worse, IMO. Who knows how it ends. Our issues in the USA are not related to Ukraine/Russia so we can fix them.

Unfortunately Bill disagrees.

Jalopy Tavai absolutely ****ing SUCKS… Dude’s barely a Practice Squad talent.

Once again, Little Bill is either a Liar or a Fool; take your pick…
