DRAFT Cole Strange-Welcome to the Pats

I view this as defending his good friend and fellow coach Bill Belichick in response to the viral video of the Rams coach and GM. This is not to say the 49ers would have taken Cole Strange in the first round.

John Lynch played for the Patriots and Belichick at the end of his career.

Further, it’s the concept of marginal utility that’s been around in economic circles, esp. the Austrian School of Economics, for over a century.

People value something subjectively. Not what the “objective” value for it is.

In Karl Marx’s own lifetime, one of his central pillars of Marxism the labor theory of value was debunked on similar grounds.

But if the realization of perceived value of others means something, too.

No one knows if Cole Strange with his stellar athleticism and dominant play in the FCS would have been available at 54. The chances, however, are very strong that he would have been.

Meanwhile, will the Bills even bother having a punter with the team when they play the Patriots?

A 49ers supporting friend of mine told me that Shanahan was talking about perceived value in the media and implied that they had a first round value on Strange too.

I can't find the clip online anywhere though.
The problem with perceived value for other teams is that Strange is compared athletically to other guards. It is totally possible that for the 9ers and Patriots, Strange is off the charts. But again, he's being compared to other guards historically.

A lot of people here wanted us to take Zion Johnson. Strange might be right there with Zion in the Patriots eyes.

But you can't deny there was a huge contingent of Patriots fans who didn't want a guard, even Zion, in the 1st round. This is the main problem with Strange. He's a guard.

When you look at the top of the first round, it's telling that it's made up exclusively of pass rushers, CBs, WRs and LTs.

Holy sh.t, Strange tested 7th on his Relative Athletic Score out of 1,300 guards taken over 3 decades. It’s starting look like the reason we didn’t like the pick was because we hadn’t heard of him, as opposed to his actual abilities. The Patriots needed to get much younger, much faster, and much more athletic in this draft, and they definitely achieved those goals. Whether they turn out to be really good players or not we won’t know for 2-3 seasons, but given what they had to work with, and what they needed to achieve they seem to have made the most out of this draft.

F*cking commie. How many rings does Karl Marx have? Huh? How many?

Marx couldn’t carry Deng Xiaoping’s track shoes.

Thanks BGC. I have not seen this posted - RAS score is a summation of athletic testing. Strange had the highest score of any guard. Did not see this posted anywhere. Notice Strange tested higher than Zion or Ekwonu. Also notice that Chasen Hines tested very high as well.

Yup he's an uber athlete with a mean streak. OG7 for me with a 3rd but I might have been a little low. I grade for the long haul, not necessarily where someone will get drafted but we'll see how he turns out.

I saw something in March I believe that spoke to how athletic he is. I'll post after the Celts game.

I'd like to read your review of the draft, BGC. Enjoy the game.

Appreciate it. I know it's a little late. I'd have it up just been busy. Definitely have some info that will make some feel better about Strange, Strong, Zappe ...

Cheers mate

Thanks. Zappe is OK. We need new QB blood and posters always hate drafting a QB.

Remember when Garoppolo was drafted in Round 2. Everyone went crazy. Same complaint as always when we draft a QB - Need the draft pick for something more critical.

Hopefully Zappe works out and Stidham is traded in August for a 2023 pick. Hopefully Harry and Stidham can fetch a 4th and 6th in 2023. Michel was a 4th - glad we moved on from him.

So your saying it's not smart to draft 1st round talent in the 1st and instead draft 2nd-4th rounders in the 1st and use the extra picks you got for trading down to move up and grab a 4th round talent wr in the 2nd? Now that's some high iq right there.
I'm saying you don't know what 1st round talent actually is. You, like most people, are parroting the draftnicks. You've bought into their propaganda that they KNOW their stuff. The only thing these draftnicks are trying to do is guess where player X will be drafted. They honestly don't care how the player turns out. Not a single draftnick has ever gone back and reviewed what they said about a player to see if they performed the way they projected. These "draftnicks" have no idea how teams truly see prospects. That was proven, yet again, with this draft.

It's come out that no fewer than 4 teams had a 1st round grade on Strange.

Who said Thornton was a "4th round talent"? oh. Yeah.. Those same draftnicks who swore Nakobe Dean was going in the 1st round. Same with Raimann.

You shouldn't talk about what is "high IQ" when what you're posting is nothing but parroting draftnicks who's job it is to get clicks..

As I predicted and fwiw, mcvay was quick to make his ‘i was not criticizing the pick and hes a great player’ announcement:

The only people who thought McVay was criticizing the Pats are the ones who look at everything in a negative light to begin with. Ones who ignored key points of what McVay said. like the words MAYBE and HOPING.

IS Strange JUST a guard though? I posted that his build (height/weight) is almost identical to Matt Light. I posited that the Patriots could be looking at Strange as the future LT while playing at LG this year. Strange is actually stronger and more athletic than Light. I know that doesn't mean he'll be better, I'm just positing that the Patriots may not view him as JUST a guard..

One thing's for sure, you can look and see what Friedrich Engels produced without Marx and what Marx produced without Engels and it's pretty clear that it was all Marx even though the two will always be linked historically.

I'm coming in late to a 47 page thread and I have to revive a stat that I am sure has been mentioned:

Strange has allowed one sack since 2018.

What other OL was available, who actually played, who has that stat?

I would also like to propose, assuming that it has not yet been proposed, that we begin now to call him "Cool Strange" because I'm unhappy that only his last name is an adjective. "Cole" also reminds me too much of "12 Monkeys."

I have spoken.

This thought has definitely crossed my mind. But Strange does not have long arms.

Strange's arm length is exactly the same as Matt Light's.

I refer you to Dante Scarneccia's comments regarding Arm Length.

I think that was a knock on Light too.
Yep. Matt Light had 33in arms.. 10 years in the league. ALL-PRO LT.

Certain people get hung up on arm length despite what coaching greats tell us.
