Tom Brady Retires (Update: Shouts out to Pats players, coaches on social media)

So has your only experience as a football fan been as a fan of a Brady team?

A lot of people are in this position, & that's okay, it just means you're not that old. That's being half a fan, and it is by far the funner half. The other half is hanging with the team, even if grumbling, looking for progress, growth, etc., even when seasons do end disappointingly -- even when seasons begin without apparent promise. By the way, the fact that it's divided up half and half like this is because this is a Pats forum... some teams, all you have is proudly suffering through bad teams for decade after decade. I don't wish that on anybody except Jets fans.

It's way better, I agree, to go into a season as a good bet to win it all, and way more fun as a fan. It's great to be packed to the gills with weapons nobody has answers for etc. etc. etc. It was superb, for nearly 2 decades, to always be a threat, because Brady would make us a threat. Yep he is gone. I like the next guy up. They hit a home run, getting a kid that can compete as a rookie, and he did that. So it'll be fun watching him develop, and watching the team fill out, and so on.,

It was great watching those years when we were just the odds-on favorite almost any given season... it was even sweeter watching different layers of football wishes come true after spending some years where we went without. Being well fed is absolutely preferable to hungry. But I bet your first ever (your favorite dish here) would be better if you'd subsisted in gruel up to then. On the other hand, there is a limit. kindly GIs during the liberation of camps in Europe realized in horror that the Hershey bars they were giving to starving prisoners were too rich for some of them and caused them serious medical issues, That's what a SB would be like to a JETE fan.
I am 47 and I don't agree at all. I hated watching the Pats of the late 80s, early 90s. I did enjoy both SB runs in 85 and 96 but nothing compares to watching the GOAT for 20 years. And I am not just talking about ALL the wins but the way he played the position. His competitive fire that was second to none and his big game, clutch moments that made me jump off my couch too many times to count.

Perhaps the best part was watching him go past all the other great QBs of the game - Marino, Elway, Montana and then his contemporaries Manning, Favre, Brees. And now we get the joy of watching every young QB get compared to his historic resume.

Football won't be the same for sure for me. But it is not just Brady but also the game itself with the bogus rules, Roger's ridiculous and unfair disciplinary actions and the refs blatantly rigging games. In many ways, Brady was a throw back QB especially when compared to today's young gunslingers but to me the game has become unrecognizable. I will always be a Pats fan and root for the team but man, what a ride we had for 20 years.

I don't know that we disagree - maybe? I lknow the good and the meh teams, and the true garbage teams, actually prepped me to get the absolute most out of that ride.

Here's something you remember at your age. 90s bandwagon Cowboys fans, in it for the temporary dynasty. I mean, the threat of the Cowboys just looked omnipresent back then, right? And these guys just didn't want to hang with their Patriots, or Jets, or Bengals, or whoever. They wanted somebody to root for who might actually do something,. I could never really do that, not even when Tommy was in Tampa Bay. I was happy for him, as a fav. player, winning with Tampa, but it wasn't really like having "another team." There were just no stakes. The stakes come from looking for ways it can all happen, even when there are bad odds. Just giving up and saying "I know how it can happen, I'll look for a team that's good, then there's no risk in getting into them winning. They're going to come pretty close, guaranteed," doesn't work for me. But neither does JETE level self-loathing mind you, but there's a lot of middle ground there for the sweet spot.

I don't expect to ever see the equal of this 20 year run or even anything comparable. I just remind myself that the actual players have to be out there physically working to make their belief into something real, so I have pretty cush job as a fan.

I don't think football will be the same for any Pats fan after these 20 years, and in terms of how your "football fan life" goes, if the Pats became a laughingstock, God forbid, I'd still die with more to be happy for than any non-Pats fan.

On your topline point, competitive fire is a narrative that fits him. He also won an inordinate amount. There are other guys out there that reeked of competitive fire. They just didn't win that much.

I think we say that as a handy stand-in that doesn't sound nerdy for "all intangibles." What I saw was he had total command of the field. He knew exactly what he was seeing and he knew it FAST. Just watching him almost seemed to slow down the game. It was fielder's choice how to dissect the defense. He also knew in real time exactly what broke down, could chew you out on national TV, then next play go right back to you and celebrate when it worked. And he knew to do that. Think who else inherently gets that, what each guy actually needs to be their best. When I say "each guy," I obviously can't be bothered with the ones he just couldn't be bothered with in his later years here. I mean, have you ever seen a receiver say, "I'm a good receiver with this QB over here, Tom Brady just didn't get me"? He seems to just be over running the "make Reche Caldwell a no. 1 receiver" phase of life. He needs to have some kind of complementary talent level.

OK, lots of asides. More just reminiscing than arguing.

Did I just see a report that "Brady officially retires" when in truth he has not. I'll wait to hear it from Brady instead of the mediots on BSPN.

I never ever blame the wife because it’s such a tired dumb old trope for all of history and people who actually know what they’re talking about have reported how over the past 15 heard Giselle has been extremely supportive of Brady’s career and indeed helped inspire him to play hardball over it. BUT in this case I think this might finally be true. Schefter and Darlington would only run a story like this so confidently with THE most ironclad info. And if it’s not Tom who else has that authority?
Are you really saying that mediots don't lie? Defamegate should have taught you differently.

I'm a fan of both BB and TB and will say I agree, it will be weird. Looked at my DVR and it has a copy of last week's game on it, and it made me think: I watched that entire game and didn't once say to myself this guy is playing his last NFL game. Yeah, I had heard the murmurs but gave them next to no credence. like less than 1 in a thousand odds, and didn't give it a second thought while the game was on.

Wish I could agree with this, but I can't. The reasons behind him leaving were complex, but he did become a FA as he was entitled to do and he did leave. Tampa put the best offer on the table and got his commitment, he justified their commitment and earned his pay. He will always be a part of Tampa's legacy too.

You give credence to a story from BSPN? That's odd.

I wonder how Brady looks at the way he left here? It definitely surprised BB, who ended up with Cant Newton off the NYFL trash heap.

My first game was with my dad in the 60s at Fenway vs San Diego. I have a vivid memory of Ernie Ladd coming out early and putting on a show without his pads by banging into the goalpost in right field to get them shaking wildly.

The 70s brought some very difficult times vs the Raiders. It's great to have moved so far ahead of them now.

The 80s run culminated in the first NYFL team to win 3 road playoff games. That was the Squish the Fish year and if not for a smothering Bears defense it could have been our 1st SB win.

Then came the 90s, when Tuna Crap dumped on this team during a SB run. He was in NJ's pocket the entire season and took Curtis Martin with him when he bolted.

And then there's the Brady years. Words can't really describe the 20 years of the 2000s, can they?

And Joe Montana's KC legacy will always be remembered. Come on.

Of course, TFB went to Tampa and got them a trophy,... sorta different, I guess.
Ask a KC fan if Montana is a part of their legacy and they will say yes, he took us to an AFCCG even though he was in decline and oft injured because the rules of the day let the D line tee off on the quarterback.

Ask a Tampa fan and they'll say of course TB12 is a part of our legacy, he played two seasons at a MVP level and won us the ****ing Super Bowl!

SO HERE IS A LIVE GRENADE AND A STOOPIT ONE AT THAT. Let me stipulate, it will never happen.. .but then again, never say never. Anyhoo. Pretend it's a possibility on the table. Let's hear it:

Suddenly, right after the Super Bowl, Brady surprise-announces, it's not so simple. He goes golfing with Bill Belichick.

TFB tells BB he wants the 1-year retirement tour. He will play for league minimum. To hell with it, he gets that fat void year in 2023 anyway, play cheap in '22. He will take whatever personnel they can afford to lure to Foxboro. Gronk, of course, has a "property of Tom Brady" t-shirt so he'll come too.

Anyway that void year stuff was to SOUND like there's some way this can happen for the live grenade value.

Do you WANT BB to take the deal?

Or do you want BB to say "Tommy, we love you, but we've moved on. Mac needs to develop. You can be a QBs coach any time."

BEGIN!
Disrupt the development of the entire rest of the team so TB12 and Gronk could have a ball-washing tour? Hell no! Who would sign up for that? Whomever would should be locked in a room with a TV endlessly showing "Tom vs Time" with Gronk's USAA ad breaking in every two minutes.

Absolutely not.

Belichick agreeing to something like that would be fireable IMO.

Brady would never even think to ask anyway.

Spoken like a true Bradyite...

Brady will likely formally announce after receiving his bonus check next week.

Then Tampa Bay can decide whether to take back any of the bonus money, as is their right. Also, TB might want to make this a post June 1 retirement to spread the cap hit.

And yes, it is still possible that Brady will be persuaded to play another year for the Bucs. He wanted to play at 45. And coming into the HOF rubbing elbows with Big Ben is awful to ponder.

I read somewhere that basically Brady realized the coaching staff is a bunch of idiots who blitzed and cost him a chance at back to back Super Bowls. One would assume that is speculation but I think Arians being a buffoon combined with the cap starting to catch up with Tampa Tom may feel like he doesn't want to play another year at 45 on a team that may take a step backwards.

Hard to say. The defense got him 4 fumbles that helped jump start the comeback. On the first play of the last drive they blitzed and caused Stafford to fumble but he fell on it. They live and die by the blitz. I really doubt one game made him decide he didn't like the coaching staff considering they helped him put up the best back-to-back seasons of his career and also shut down Mahomes in the SB in the process.

I think Brady has still the desire to play. Just not for Bruce Arians. I think this year open his eyes and make him regret Bill a little bit. I think he is exhausted after this year because in my opinion he had to do Arians job and make sure the team was ready to play week in and week out when the injuries started to come up. I don’t think he wants to do that next year.

The report I saw said something about how he was used to a more "buttoned up" coaching staff so I would guess it goes beyond just the loss the other day. If I had to guess Brady doesn't really respect Arians as a coach but honestly who does?

I am 100% with you but define backward becaus if Brady wants to play one more year I think they can have back Godwin, Gronk and Fournette but it would need another HC.

When he sign his two years extension, he was fully committed to play in 2022 but he saw this year how much of a moron is Arians. If Brady was a free agent now, he would definitely play elsewhere in my opinion. But he can’t now unless he can convince the Bucs to trade or cut him.

The Bucs will not hold him hostage if he still wants to play somewhere else. They would trade him. The guy is the GOAT and about to be 45. He has nothing holding him back if he still wants to play, it has become apparent that he does not want to IMO. Blaming Tampa seems ridiculous to me. They will do anything Brady wants including firing Arians.

I absolutely believe that Brady is fed up with Arians but it’s incredibly dumb to just blame that blitz at the end of the Rams game cost him a Super Bowl. First of all the game was tied. Who knows what happens in OT. Second there are two more games and the Bucs are banged up on offense pretty bad and their best offensive lineman was way more hurt than they let on since he immediately went and had surgery after the loss.
