My money is on Gisele being behind this leak to prevent him from backtracking or changing his mind down the road once his body fully heals and he's got plenty of time...

I never ever blame the wife because it’s such a tired dumb old trope for all of history and people who actually know what they’re talking about have reported how over the past 15 heard Giselle has been extremely supportive of Brady’s career and indeed helped inspire him to play hardball over it. BUT in this case I think this might finally be true. Schefter and Darlington would only run a story like this so confidently with THE most ironclad info. Brady giving back the signing bonus is a non-starter IMO, he signed a two year deal for 50 million and that's almost exactly what's he's earned to date not including Super Bowl bonuses and incentives. He'll work with them to spread the dead cap out, I don't think he's giving a dime back.

The Buccaneers would have $32 million of dead money, which is a salary cap charge for a player no longer on a team's roster, with Brady retiring before June 2. That's almost $11.8 million more than Brady's 2022 cap number. Retirement would void the $8.925 million salary guarantee.

This increase could be avoided with waiting to process a Brady retirement by carrying him on the roster until at least June 2. By doing so, the $24 million of bonus proration associated with the dummy or fake 2023 through 2025 contract years would be a 2023 salary cap charge rather than part of the 2022 dead money, which would be $8 million. Just remember, there's no additional salary cap significance of a signing bonus being deferred. The player is guaranteed that money. The guaranteed amount is just spread out for salary cap purpose based on the contract length, etc.

The $15M brady is due he is entitled to if he retired night of the Rams game or on Feb 3rd or later. The deferred is to manage cash inflow of the franchise. I imagine a lot of that had to do with so many player contracts being converted/extended with signing bonuses to keep the BUCS in tact for 2021 season so was easiest to have Brady defer the payout.
