Tom Brady Retires (Update: Shouts out to Pats players, coaches on social media)

Why isn't this in the Tampa Bay fan section?

(Kidding...or am I?)

The NFCS is a trainwreck. Still the NO Saints shut Brady out. He did not have a good game vs the Pats.

The Rams fumbling 4 times saved Brady from what would have been an embarrassing defeat.
It wouldn't have mattered if he lost 70-3 to the Rams.

Nobody is going to remember the losses. His wins are so amazing that it overshadows any bad loss.

Waiting till February 4th?

Good detail. That makes sense. Also lines up with comments from his agent Don Yee: "Without getting into the accuracy or inaccuracy of what's being reported, Tom will be the only person to express his plans with complete accuracy... He knows the realities of the football business and planning calendar as well as anybody, so that should be soon."

On the one hand, it would be odd to see a QB retire when he's clearly still at the top of his game.

On the other, family does come into play. He probably wants to see his kids grow up and enjoy the finer moments of life.

Imagine if Brady announced his retirement around the same time the SB ended.

He wouldn't do it because he's too classy.

But it would be another much deserved FU to the league.

Hed have to give the money back so I doubt it.
He wouldn't have to. It would be paid out to him and then the Bucs would have to choose to try to recoup some of it back from him if he retires. They wouldn't be entitled to get it all back since it was a signing bonus from last offseason that also converted salary into bonus money so it had as much to do with 2021 as it did with 2022. Then it would need to be decided how much they should get back, if any. And, in doing so, they'd kind of look like jerks, trying to pry money away from the GOAT after he elevated their basement dweller franchise back to relevance and one title for two seasons.

The Bucs still owe him a ton of money! They still owe him 32 million in signing bonus. Plus they re-did his contract last off season to add three void years. Brady retiring is going to leave the Bucs in some serious cap situation.

I'm not sure how retirement differs from flat out cutting a guy for the NFL books, but either way, he is getting his signing bonus.
This article does a nice job of laying out the ramifications of Tom's retirement to the cap and possible ways the Bucs can lessen the hit.

Poor Big Ben (sarcasm) If Brady does retire, Roethlisberger's Hall of Fame induction gets overshadowed by Brady's as they both are
likely first ballot.

Brady giving back the signing bonus is a non-starter IMO, he signed a two year deal for 50 million and that's almost exactly what's he's earned to date not including Super Bowl bonuses and incentives. He'll work with them to spread the dead cap out, I don't think he's giving a dime back.

New Orleans tried to trade up ahead of us to take Mac and couldn't find a willing partner.

New Orleans only discussed this year’s first rounder if you believe Howe. 28th overall. There’s always a price to move up and, if you truly believe that’s your guy at the most important position, you’ll make it happen.

If by some magical happenstance BB signed Tom in 2020 he would have borrowed against even more cap to put a better team around him... it would have been dumb.

Brady should have been signed until age 45 long before 2020. But you’re correct that they wouldn’t have put together a better team around him. That’s what happens when 8 drafts are anywhere from mediocre to outright terrible.

Moving on was the right decision for both parties. Math doesn't lie.

Math actually lies all the time. Especially in the business world. That said? The decision worked out for both parties. It’s worked out much better for Brady than it has for us.

That's a pipe dream. The pats come out of this Brady thing smelling like a rose. They were smart to walk away.
Pats smell like a rose. Brady smells like new brass from that heavy ass ring and another Lombardi.

Unless I'm reading it incorrectly it seems TB might want to restructure once the new league year starts then Tom retires "officially" in June.

Ian Rapaport this morning - spoke with several people close to Brady and he is fact retiring

Schefter and Darlington are two of the best in the business. I'd now be stunned if Brady doesn't retire.

Playing GM from your lazyboy recliner is a lot different than actually doing it in the real world NFL. The Saints tried to trade up, teams ahead of the Patriots were happy with their position and knew who they were taking. Some teams that aren't very smart like Mike Ditka trading his entire draft for Ricky Williams don't often workout. If Trey Lance is a bust then John Lynch will look like the biggest clown in draft history, that's generally why you don't mortgage your future. Draft picks are unreliable, it's a crapshoot.

The rest ^ of what you wrote a typical misanthropic negative Nancy take on the Patriots situation the last six years of the dynasty when they were playing in four Super Bowls and winning three rings... they were simultaneously the best and worst at the same time... it makes sense but only if one is off their medication. Also those four Super Bowls and three rings they won at the end were partly the result of short one year deals for Brady and Gronk that kept them flexible and able to make moves in an attempt to win rings.... these were contracts Tom agreed to and signed... and Gronk begrudgingly signed. Those rings likely don't happen without wringing every last dollar of cap space out of the roster.

But I'll put it in math terms a 12 year old could understand.

In 2020 Dead Cap + Gilmore's Cap combined equalled roughly 54.8 million dollars.

In 2020 the entire Salary Cap for the NFL was 198 million.

That's roughly a quarter of the Pats 2020 cap space.

In 2020 their QB along with 11 other starters or major contributors were free agents and needed to be re-signed or replaced.

They also had a vet team with little in the youth pipeline, not because they were terrible at drafting, but because they mostly didn't draft until 2018, primarily employing vet experienced players who knew how to win. To that point they traded out to future years or for players like Brandin Cooks to help them win now, or only drafted players like Sony or Wynn who could step in and play immediately.

In 2018 when they finally started drafting they missed a first round pick and BB Haters lost their minds. It had nothing to do with a rebuild that had to happen anyway.

In 2020 Tom Brady wasn't making his decision based off what some 22 year old kid did in 2019.

Math

Or, if my senior citizen relatives living in St Pete are correct in how they describe Tampa, it will end up with needles in its arms and bullet holes in its chest.
I have relatives in Tampa, Pt Charlotte they say the same. Robbing houses left and right

The more I'm thinking about this, the more it makes sense that there is some money/cap ramifications at play with the confusion. It reminds me of when Edelman got cut, and people were PISSED, thinking the Pats screwed him or disrespected him by cutting him before he retired. But then it turned out there was some benefit he was eligible for that he wouldn't have been if he'd retired under contract (I'm fuzzy on the details now).

This could be a case of it being beneficial for Tom or the Bucs or both if it's not official until a certain date. Or he could be legitimately still mulling it, but the former makes more sense to me than some (usually) very professional reporters went all in on a story that turned out to be horse cabbage.
