Miguel's Jonnu Smith question

Time is running out, they are both signed for next year and this year there are 6 more games plus the break.
It's been covered, but Jonnu's a 4-year saga not a 1-year thumbs-up/thumbs-down.
I think of how highly his teammates have talked about Jonny and the big plays he was making in pre-season and practice and I just have to believe it’s just a matter of time.

I was actually hoping this was the N’Keal Harry plan with all the blocking they’re having him do… setting up for a deep shots out of a heavy run looks…
I don't know what gives with Harry but he's suddenly at least contributing. I would love to see that continue and both sides to step back from the need to ride him out of town on a rail. I mean, it would be a weird turnaround. Usually once it's as far off the rails as it's been with N'keal, that's that. But N'keal gives you just enough to hold out hope.
Your comments are well done, however there is some credibility to Johnnu's role as blocker, particularly run blocker. Is the recent surge in run yards pg partially due to him??

I love that possibility.

I tend to hit what I think of as the "event horizon" of the New England information black hole, then say to myself, "nope, nothing to truly know past right there"...."Here there be speculation."

That said, let's speculate... it could even be the case that "discovering" him as a run blocker is just the whole explanation of the "sky-is-falling" stat story. Maybe he's just a rare talent as a blocking tight end, and they think he is worth 12.5M APY to do it. I mean, if we can break off yards in chunks with JS blocking, and we can't without, and it is special and resides in the person of Jonnu Smith only.... then WOW, how valuable is THAT?

However, it seems unlikely as an intentional strategy. I think more likely it's "Well yeah we want him in the pass game but the blocking role is also a great use."

It would also be great if the Pats were saving the JS star turn for the Tennessee game :)

Since Harry is being brought up in this thread for some reason... I'll chip in that I low key and very secretly admire how he's just blocked the noise and kept grinding.

One of the very, very, very few songs where I enjoyed one of the remakes (Seal) just about as much as the original (Steve Miller).
I saw Steve Miller in concert in 1993. And only because I was trying to get in the pats of the young lady I brought. It almost worked.

All I'll say is that Danny amendola was hated his first year. Then in year 2 in the playoffs he took off and became a Patriots hero.

So not every free agency signings hits the ground running with this offense. But doesn't mean he won't at some point.

I sense a freudian slip in there somewhere

Im not expecting much this year anymore. I think we arent going to keep trying new things to see whats good in December, now its time to enhance what is good, and Jonnu isnt in this category, except in a few plays

Cant wait to be wrong tho

I see it very differently, I think he will end up playing important roles in their biggest games. I’m not going to compare him to Amendola, as Amendola never really lived up to his contract in his seasonal numbers, but when they really needed him he would make big plays that kept their season’s alive. I think Smith will have strong seasonal numbers over the next few years, but I also think he will make big plays for them in big games, and I can see him making plays that keep their season alive.

already been caught but if you're gonna Freudian slip, that's a great one!

I am generally an optimist ( a homer in Patsfans terms) as I don’t see the point in pessimism, but Smith is a really talented player at a position where athletic ability is what separates the average from the really good/great players. I don’t think Belichick brought Smith and Henry in with the expectation that he would be starting a rookie QB, and I think that their numbers have suffered as a result, but I think that will improve over the rest of the season as well as in coming seasons. I think defenses have been trying to slow down the Patriots run game as well as their shorter passing routes, and that the Patriots offense will have to lengthen the field to open up more opportunities for the TE’s in the passing game. The Patriots offense is a work in progress but they have many of the pieces they need for the future, I expect them to build upon that this off-season.

I would like to see some screens to Jonnu. He might be able to get us at least 5-7 yards with those plays.

Harry is a pleasant surprise. Maybe we go with 2.5 TE package with Jonnu, Harry and Henry.

Henry is taking it in red zone. Leads NFL in touchdowns amongst TEs
