How Mac Jones Looked in His First Start Compared With Tom Brady

I think it's fair to say Mac Jones will likely not do half of the following:

-Overcome a 10 point deficit in the 4th quarter to win in a snowstorm. Divisional Round game.

-Beat a 14 point favorite in the SB. While leading the game winning fg drive.

-Beat a 14 win SB favorite on the road. Chargers game. Trailing by 8 points in 4th.

- Nearly beat a superior opponent on the road in a dome. While most of the team has the flu. AFC title game.

- Go perfect in the regular season. 17-0. 19-0 sans a once in a billion lucky catch.

- Overcome two 14 point deficits at home to successfully beat a great defense. AFC Divisional Round game against Baltimore.

- Storm a ten point rally in the 4th quarter of the SB against a once in a generation type defense. A win btw.

- Throw 28 TD's against 2 interceptions in 12 games. 2016.

-Successfully overcome a 25 point deficit with like 20 minutes left in the SB.

- Win MVP at age 40. His 3rd league MVP.

- Shred the best defensive team in the league with an injured hand. Down 20-10 in the 4th and win 24-10. AFC title game.

-Throw 505 yards against a great defense in the SB at age 40. All the while his coach is benching key players and his defense is getting shredded.

- Concert three 3rd and 10's in OT against the best team in the league. On the road in a hostile environment. AFC Title Game.

- At age 42, with nothing to work with, put up better numbers than most of the QB's in the league.

-Go to the worst pro sports franchise and win a SB in year one. Beating three HOF QB's consecutively. Two of said games on the road.

-Still be a top 3 QB at age 44.

- Win 5 SB MVP's. 7 SB wins in total. 10 SB appearances.

By my count, Brady has won 5 (Raiders, Ravens, Seahawks, Falcons, and Jags) postseason games when trailing by 10 or more. 3 league MVP's. 18 pro bowls. 3 all pro's. Has every QB record imaginable it seems.

Jones will be great imo.

But Brady is the exception to every rule.

I am just glad BB drafted, developed and promoted Brady. BB does a nice job when he has the ability to pick his own QB of his choosing. The results are quite good. I bet Garoppolo would've been better here than in SF, too. Coaching matters. And Brady got the best one ever giving him the answers to the test along the way.

Jones seems like he has the recall capability and football IQ to be groomed as well. We all know how well BB builds his teams and dynasties.

eh, matter of time.

Tom who?

I’m surprised no one has brought up the early Brady phrase:

The It Factor

Remember how everyone used that to describe Tom because they couldn’t really figure out what he excelled at but knew it when they saw it? Some combo of:
  • Confidence and command in the huddle
  • Anticipation of player movement
  • Unfazed by pass rush
  • Quick decision making
  • Ice cold assassin in big moments (developed more in 2001 postseason)
What I see from Mac so far - like Brady - is that natural understanding of the clock and the pocket, as well as the field vision. Watching Tua yesterday, it was clear he has one of those hot potato timers in his head.

Check option 1, throw if open.
If covered, quickly check option 2 or throw away.

With Mac, as with Brady, the amount of time to throw is more of a sense of the pocket and pass rush. Progressions are more natural than forced. Moving in the pocket is to create a little more time or space, or a throwing lane, whereas many QBs seem to struggle with keeping their eyes downfield at the same time as assessing the pressure.

Jones was a better college qb than Brady!

Jones is light years ahead of Brady as a rookie.

but nobody will ever have more of the “it” factor (whatever “it” is) than Brady. Brady makes the other 52 guys on the tram better! Simply put….Brady if the best there is or ever was!

Brady was not fantastic in his first year. He was good with a lot of protection by the D and STs. 18 TDs and 12 INTs isn't bad, as Manning threw way more INTs early in his career, but he didn't look as good as Mac did in his first game.

RIP David Patten and gimmicks vs Indy was how Brady won his first game. I didn't see any gimmicks needed on Sunday with Mac. He looked like a season pro.

Jones was 16/20 vs the blitz and had 138 yards passing. Very impressive. Brady beats the blitz, too.

Don't fix this b/c the mental image is too great... but the other 52 guys on the tram?

And I thought I'd heard every version of the "trolley problem"

What gimmicks? Are you talking about the 2and Indy game?

Put it this way: after just preseason and 1 regular season game, I've seen enough that I no longer miss Tom. I feel confident that we're set at QB for the indefinite future.

At some point we had to pivot from TB. He's been outrunning the coverage, God bless him, but it can't go on forever. He did us a favor by ending it, so we could move on.

Think he's talking about how our D used to be able to fool Manning by disguising coverages pretty well, and doing pretty radical things including having Ty Law and Rodney Harrison switch positions in the AFCC on a handful of snaps. However, a big part of that success was just punching the Colts in the mouth every single time until the NFL stepped in and made football a game more of a slapfest.

Manning reportedly got so desperate he tried to get Ty Law drunk to pump him for tips on how they were able to disguise so well, but I think that's more of an old wives' tales.

Given the Pat's cap situation, it was the right thing for both player and team.

The majority of fans don't understand the cap, so this escapes them entirely.

Ok, but Brady didn't become a backup until his second year. He couldn't even beat out John Friesz or Michael Bishop in 2000. And he didn't excel in college like Mac did. I'm not saying Mac will have a better career than Brady (which has been amazing) but it's clear Mac is more ready to play in this league now than Brady was when he entered the league. There's a reason why Brady went in the 6th round.
Brady had an amazing college career despite the circumstances. He wasn't named the starter but was put in when the starter sucked and won multiple come from behind games. Brady was a closer even in college. Nobody believed in him because they couldn't measure his intangibles, he looked like a skinny go nowhere kid.

Yes I agree, Mac was exposed to an NFL offense and TBH, I think hes smarter than even Brady. Lets see if he has the same come from behind determination and ability to impose his will on the competition like Brady does.

One of the things I like about Mac is his determination. Last week a reporter asked him about Brady and Mac refused to bow down to him. He said, "he obviously did a good job with the Patriots." However, he didn't want to say Brady was the GOAT.

“He definitely did a good job,” Jones said. “When I first got here, just watching all the tape, I’ve watched all the quarterbacks, obviously he was on there and he did a really, really good job. Hopefully I can do a good job too.”

Yes. BB protected Brady a lot early on. Smart move with a developing QB who didn't know much after being a late bloomer.

I don't know about that. The Brady Drama had been going on for years right under our noses. Even his dad saying "it will end badly" was passive aggressive. No one even knew what that meant back in 2014/2015 other than it being a childish public lobbying for his son to get a long term contract that he wanted until 45.

From the revolt he led in 2017 with the signing of Gilmore and Butler wanting money, to the passive-aggressive Amendola and Gronk childish Twitter and Facebook usage acting totally unprofessional, to Brady's own antics and sideline blow ups as people are rolling their eyes on the sidelines right in front of him. There were so many clues that Brady didn't like not being the king of the team that he though he deserved.

Brady rigged this TB reunion with Gronk well in advance and has been trolling the fans and Kraft/BB ever since. I cannot imagine other Boston legends doing these things, and the thing is, they haven't. Williams, Russell, Orr, Bird...None of em behaved that way.

I agree with your other comment about breaking away from that and apparently finding his successor fairly quickly, as other franchises spend decades to do it.

They've been listening to Vulgar and Spazz for over 10 years. Disinformation has run rampant on the internet to condition people to believe falsehoods. Like Deflategate. Or Spygate. Or Documentary Seriesgate. Vulgar has sad for years contracts mean nothing and can be re-worked over a weekend with no repercussions.

Then I think about how bad Aaron Rodgers's GMs have been for him or Mickey Loomis for Brees in NOs. They were terrible and coasted on their SB from a decade ago.

The salary cap is critical to any team's success and its momentum to remain a playoff contender year to year. Some teams mask it real well like Pitt and Baltimore, but most teams are terrible, and will remain terrible. Who knows how bad a shape KC and TB will be in soon, but it "will end badly".

Of course. But nobody is doing Mac any favors if he's being compared to Brady all the time. Brady is a once in a lifetime athlete and yes it's extremely unlikely that Mac will ever measure up to that level. I've also said the same thing about Brady's first year but the only thing you could say about that is that a QB's first year doesn't make a career. Mac will make his own history here. I don't see why he can't win a title or two of his own.
This :)

I think Mac will do very well statistically compared to early Brady - but so will guys like Mahomes and the rest. The NFL has really changed their league and now it is easier for QBs to put up numbers that in the old days were huge.

I have been impressed with Mac's grit. That is what really bodes well for him right now.

After watching the Cowboys game I was very impressed with how Dak could stand in there and take hits while throwing to the uncovered guy.. I wondered if Mac could do that. It turns out he can. This is something that really derails alot of promising QBs - they get spooked and get happy feet..

Most people laud Mac's intelligence but its going to be his reaction to adversity that makes or breaks him. For most guys - it breaks them. Most QBs don't make it. It's the most important position but at the same time has a ton of turnover..

Incidentally Mac missed quite a few open targets more down the field. I think he alluded to this in his press conference. So it will be neat to see if he can be more aggressive and keep most of his accuracy.

Can't find stats for Steve Grogan's first career start in 1975.

Mac showed in college and in preseason that he has excellent down field accuracy.
