How Mac Jones Looked in His First Start Compared With Tom Brady

Precisely because the game has changed, in 20 years someone other than Brady will be widely regarded as being the new GOAT. Maybe Mahomes, but nobody knows. Almost every top QB prospect has a higher ceiling than Mac, because their ceiling is Tom Brady with legs. I agree that Mac can't be the new GOAT, because he lacks the legs. Trey Lance and Justin Fields have a much higher ceiling than Mac because they might some day be better than Brady because of their legs.

Your view of quarterback play, ceiling, and greatness tied to scrambling ability is not shared by most. In the recent NFL100, 10 quarterbacks from history were selected:
  • Baugh (pocket)
  • Brady (pocket)
  • Elway (scrambler)
  • Favre (mostly pocket)
  • Graham (mostly pocket)
  • Manning (pocket)
  • Marino (pocket)
  • Montana (mostly pocket)
  • Staubach (scrambler)
  • Unitas (pocket)
Baugh, Brady, Manning, Marino, and Unitas were all statues behind the line. Elway was the only one close to being a dual-threat or relying on his legs, and his championships were won when he mostly gave that up.

Even now, in the last twenty years there have been so many hyped up “mobile quarterbacks.” The Hall of Famers from the 90s forward are Aikman, Favre, Warner, and Manning, likely to be followed by Brady, Brees, Roethlisberger, Rivers, and possibly Eli and possibly Ryan.

Young, Rodgers, Wilson, and Mahomes are still not close to being a prototype for greatness or “higher ceiling” of greatness.

Let's stop the Brady comparisons. Let's appreciate a rookie QB making that touch throw to White yesterday, dropping it in his hands and beyond the defender. That was a thing of beauty.

I was being sarcastic. Interesting that so many find that viewpoint credible.

Pretty interesting tidbit

You have to be kidding me. lol. Comparing A QB who went to a team that had 20 years of success with a money spent loaded team, in his first game 20 years later? Comparing two players in their first games 20 years apart is not only stupid, its borderline fireable. I knew the boston media was stupid, but wow.

And let's not forget that the Patriots have continuity now on offense, a long history of running their offense in this league. The 2001 Patriots were coming off an offense designed for big armed Drew Bledsoe, and it was still a Ron Erhardt offense. Weis is the guy who designed what we have now, but he was not yet who he was to become.

That being said, Mac Jones's throwing style and his pocket presence reminds me a lot of.... Peyton Manning. Not Brady.
Patriots were also coming off only winning 13 playoff games in 40 years. Boston media never surprises me for stupidity anymore.

Mac already looks better than Brady did his first year. Mac was named the starter, Brady was not until the following year. Brady was what, 1-4 vs Detroit in his first game action?
If the Pats just gave a QB a 100 mil contract Mac would not be the starter this year. The Pats didnt have a QB that is why Mac was named the starter. Brady was 4th on the depth chart and worked his way up to backup and was the first one in when the starter went down and never gave up his job. Two completely different scenarios that have zero to do with either QB.

Why. Why do we do this crap? I’ve found a lot of people to ignore lately
He is or will never be tfb, half of him would be amazing

Make it 25 yards in the air and I don’t think Mac had 1.

I mean he might have, I am just wondering how many of that type of pass those players on the list had. I think Mac had one completion that far on the throw to White on the wheel route. I believe those other players had more than 1 throw that long.

I dont understand, are Mac's legs gone? What happened that I didn't hear about between Sunday and this evening? How did Mac lose his legs?

I'm surprised you guys are surprised by this, you've been here your whole lives, c'mon, we have writers like Tomasse still working.

Ok, but Brady didn't become a backup until his second year. He couldn't even beat out John Friesz or Michael Bishop in 2000. And he didn't excel in college like Mac did. I'm not saying Mac will have a better career than Brady (which has been amazing) but it's clear Mac is more ready to play in this league now than Brady was when he entered the league. There's a reason why Brady went in the 6th round.

Mac threw a 3 yard pass to the flat on one play and I said "Brady could never make that play" and got so many dirty looks from the folks around me lol it's too soon but it's inevitable. The Brady comparisons will be there all his career like it or not

brady was 20-5 as a starter in college and won two bowl games. According to belichick in his Book Brady looked better than all the QB's pretty early on in his first year. Again Mac was taken number 15, he was not competing with a 100 mil dollar QB. Mac was going to have the job. Brady had to prove what he was. The reasons why players are drafted where they are have nothing to do with what they are. There has been number 1 overall QB picks that didnt even make it a year. You watched one game of Mac in the pro's and the team lost and they couldnt even score 20 points. Let him actually have a few games before you start comparing him to hall of famers.

I hope you were kidding...because...wow. I am going to ruin the story here a bit. If people's expectations are that Mac will be brady, you are setting yourself up for failure.

No. Not at all. He looks nothing like Peyton to me. I totally disagree.
