Pats trade Sony Michel to LAR

4th rounder in what promises to be a VERY deep draft is more like a 3rd rounder. Plus, Pats save money and he was gone after this year. They had him for 3 years and he was essential to winning a Super Bowl. They deal him and still get good value. What’s not to like? Next year’s draft is going to be good.
Not to pick on you, but I see this type of thing a lot, meaning almost every year. A 4th rounder is the new 3rd rounder like 40 is the new 30? You know that’s not true. A 4th rounder is a 4th rounder.

And there‘s nothing wrong with that. Michel was a talented but ultimately a disappointing 1st rounder who is in the last year of his contract. Back in 2012, the Patriots traded away a 4th rounder for a talented but ultimately a disappointing 1st rounder who was in the last year of his contract in Aqib Talib. This is exactly what these types of guys are worth, so as you said they got good value. Ultimately it’s more likely than not that the 4th rounder won’t wind up with much of an NFL career, but there’s a still a decent enough chance that it could be the next Flowers or Mason.

Smart. Taylor is returning kickoffs so he was locked in. Stevenson has been solid so he was worth holding onto.

You don't pay RB's massive deals, they're expendable. BB got an instant starter for his 31st overall draft pick then exchanged it for 4th round value four years later.

If Sony stayed healthy his entire career maxing out his talent, then left now over a contract dispute because the Pats weren't willing to pay him (Chandler Jones, Jamie Collins, Trey Flowers) would that have been good value for that pick?

Sony ran them to a championship in 2018. The "BB sucks" people will find fault at every turn.
Exactly, it all added up to Sonys exodus.

JJ returns KOs and is in the Kevin Faulk role.
White is white.
Harris leap frogged over Sony last season as the # 1 RB.
Stevenson is hopefully the bruiser that the Pats have been missing since Blount.
Bolden is the jack of all trades.

Sony was in the final season of his contract. The Pats recoup his salary, which as usual is high at the end of contracts for maneuvers just like this.

You're forgetting Stevenson. He is the one that made Sony expendable. Then there's JJ Taylor..

I really like this mix. Harris and Stevenson have speed and pass-catching ability. Stevenson is a battery ram, JJ Taylor is shifty and elusive.. nothing tires a D out than having to constantly adjust to different backs.
I'm not forgetting Stevenson. I'm just counting on BB not ever getting to a point where you only have a rookie as your featured RB. Although, I've really liked what we've seen so far. In fact, I wouldn't be that worried if we did lose Harris and White for a game, and ended up with he and JJ as our 1-2 punch. Either way, it's still a super solid group

I think having a solid core of TE's lessens the pressure on the RB group to come through.

I will miss my boy Sony and it is always a pity to see a starter coming finally to his best form go.
But it was inevitable. Durability issues & contract year sealed this long ago.
When healthy he was still the best Pats RB and he showed this in preseason.
But sustainable dominant running game is mostly about OL, PP and durability/depth esp. the way Bill wants it.

4th rounder is a very solid return for RB in contract year with durability issues.
Its the top of the comp market for RBs over the last 5-6 years at least.
And they already returned the investment in Sony's replacement - on a much cheaper contract..

Anyone complaining BB didn't draft Nick Chubb instead are delusional, for one BB wouldn't have paid Chubb what the Browns did and he'd be gone anyway. Also Chubb sucked at pass blocking leaving college and the Browns put Kareem Hunt on the field on passing downs to this day.

The Pats needed an instant starter in 2018 who could play immediately with a 41 year old QB. Fans are often clueless... this is real football we're talking about, not fantasy football. Go ask Alex Smith if pass blocking from a RB is important.

Somebody good in the RB group was going to get cut, maybe Sony.

If not Sony, what was the likely gap in one year contributions between Sony and that RB to be cut?

Weigh that gap (if any) vs. getting a little more cap room, getting a 4th rounder in a year, and being able to keep a different RB for more than a year.

I think the Patriots actually got good value when you consider all factors.

The Pats misused Sony his whole career here. He was supposed to be a 3rd down back in a Alvin Kamara type role. Instead they had to use him as an lead back, which tore him up.

If he is healthy it will be interesting to see how the Rams use him.

A 4th rd comp pick isn't horrible compensation for a RB in the last year of his rookie deal. Still Sony had/has a lot of talent that was not properly used here.

Another note on Stevenson (we really need to come up with a short nickname)
While he does fill that Blount-type role, he is certainly more shifty - better hips - than Blount.
He plays lower and seems to have faster top speed. I'm eager to see more of him this week.

As predicted Michel had no role here with the other RBs and they didn't extend him. He wasn't a bad RB just not worth a 1st round pick. Those recent drafts are going to look worse and worse from Michel to Harry to a 2nd for Sanu. The John Carroll boys really wrecked the drafts until Wolf and Groh and Patricia showed up.

I just call him Rham. I refuse to type the first name and the last name is the same as that banned, idiot poster.

I wouldn't trade that 2018 championship for a 31st overall pick now... it was a fine pick, that he just got a fourth back in exchange for.
