I thought Folk was at the top of our players in terms of performance for both 2019 & 2020. He’s proven dependable and clutch. Hard to skip on a guy like that - especially a vet who knows the League.

Having said that, I was surprised when BB moved on from Zoltan. But Bailey is a stud, so, there is precedent (?)…
Folk was very dependable. The problem is that Folk is getting a bit old (36, turns 37 during the season). How long will the leg hold up? You don't know. If Nordin can show over a decent period of time that he's 80% as reliable as Folk, and you've got reason to believe that will improve as time goes on, and Nordin's got more leg than Folk (he does) - you keep Nordin. Yes, you lose out on the guaranteed money you paid Folk this year, but you've got a decent kicker on a UDFA salary for the next couple seasons, so that's okay - and you hopefully have your long-term future at kicker secured, as opposed to having to worry about the position again next year.

I mean, we don't even know if Folk's leg is still good NOW - he hasn't kicked at camp at all yet. For all we know, Folk's leg is already shot and Nordin's all we have. That's unlikely but not impossible. We'll see.

Cautiously optimistic about Nordin. We knew he had leg, but the questions were about consistency and if you could count on him to nail the short ones you need to have, and the PATs. He nailed all of 'em tonight plus the deep ones too. 10 for 10 is impressive. Let's see if he can do it in the preseason games when rushers are coming full speed.

I'm gonna need to see more from Nordin before declaring he won a spot. It wasn't more than 2 or 3 days ago that the camp reports about him were "strong leg, absolutely no accuracy".

Fully understand. Youngster - if equal - is always better. I’d caution against “80% as good”. I think he needs to be much closer than that.

But BB likes dependability. If the newb shows consistency, that’d be more impressive than “long FGs” imo.

*The Patriots will enjoy an off day on Saturday before returning to work on Sunday with practice set to kick off at 2:45 p.m. The workout is open to the public with gates opening at 2 p.m. As always please check with Patriots.com for the latest schedule updates.

*Josh McDaniels was on the Blue sideline talking to Jones in between series. He also had a walkie-talkie and may have been calling plays for both teams. Wide receivers coach Mick Lombardi was on the White sideline with what looked to be a play sheet in his hand.

I’m telling you if we try to put Nordin on IR or sneak to PS he is being claimed and a all pro kicker to some team.
Last thing I want to see is losing a game by a field goal because the opposite team marched our Nordin who hit it from 60 plus.

The finances aren't relevant. Unless he's traded, Folk's money is already spent, whether he's on the team or cut. You don't keep a guy around because you've spent money on him. Nordin's salary will be the minimum, so no impact on the cap.

All the reporting is about Nordin's distance, which as you point out, we already knew. The real question is whether the Pats' coaching staff has adjusted something about his mechanics or mental process that has improved his accuracy. Or, conversely, the 10 for 10 day was a fluke. I wish one of these reporters would get on that story, instead of just reporting what we already knew and everyone can see.

I think it is clear that the rookie needs to prove it in preseason, but he is on the right track.

The only time we've ever seen anything like this happen was Bojorquez going to the Bills. He sucked in camp here (besides having a strong leg), didn't even play in a single preseason game, then got claimed off waivers by Buffalo to be their full time punter and has done well for himself.

But here's the thing: even independent of us finding Jake Bailey, we made the right call on Bojorquez because at the time we cut him, he did not look good enough to deserve the job.

I'm not going to worry about losing Nordin on waivers until we actually know he's worth worrying about. One good practice and multiple bad practices does not make him worth worrying about.

Still rooting for him over Folk because of age and upside.

Also, interesting to hear so much about LaCosse. I had him all but gone by the first cutdown, but sounds like he's showing up as well as Henry so far. Which is worrisome for Henry and his huge $$.
Why is it worrisome? 24million of Henry's deal is guaranteed. he's going nowhere.

Well they aren’t keeping two; and the new guy won’t stay on PS anymore now tha he showed that; someone will snatch him.

of course, if he dorks up in preseason (real pressure situations) he could still pass to PS,

Bailey was a 5th round selection and as I recall Zoltan was on the last year of his contract which wasn't guaranteed. So no precedent.

I don't get why everyone thinks Nordin won't make practice squad. Because he went 10 for 10 in a walk though and has a strong leg?

Nordin went undrafted and Nick Folk will have beaten him out. I know Buffalo stole the punter a few years back (and he's still meh), but almost every team has a decent FG kicker. Why would there be a stampede for Nordin?

If we could get him there, they could protect him (you can protect 4 every week), but yeah, we'd probably never get him through waivers.

He doesn't just have a "strong leg," he kicks absolute bombs. Here's hoping they've adjusted him physically or mentally and he can keep them through the uprights, because a bomb-kicker is a special weapon.

It's all good news for "Mac to the Future" (TM)
But I still think there's no way BB doesn't start Cam week 1, because he's BB. And BB don't start no rookie QB right away. He'll let Cam remind people why we needed to use a 1st rounder, and why any growing pains after the switch is no worse than him. BB might even put a call into Mo Lewis on week 2.
We here this all the time about rookies yet top rookies start week 1. He hasn’t started a rookie qb because there never has been a rookie better (or even close) to the starter.
I get your point, but ascribing it as a BB tenet is not accurate.

If this holds, and he takes the job; does Folk get cut, out of respect to let him choose his destination OR trade (with/wout consultation) to get some value back.
he still an above avg kicker-i wonder what anyone would give?
I don’t think he has any trade value.

I don’t think he has any trade value.
Maybe - the Pats would probably release him and let him pick where he goes as a courtesy. But an accurate kicker who has proven that he can make the big kicks isn't all that common (which is why Nordin will have to absolutely win that job outright to push Folk off the roster). Some team will have a kicker get hurt, or will be unsatisfied with what they have, so maybe a low-round pick.

Even if hes not starting week 1, chances are high IMO that Mac jones will be starting games eventually this year.

either cam Newton will

A. get covid/be considered a close contact since he didnt take the vaccine.
B. Stink up the joint so bad he gets pulled for Mac Jones
C. Get injured
D. Some mixture of all of the above

Cam newton may start the season, but the door is open pretty wide for Mac Jones to step in and steal the job. Right now, Mac looks like the better quarterback. he has natural throwing motion and reads the field well. Cam newton is more of a running threat but throws the ball like a javelin

I was thinking the same thing
Thank God for Bailey.
But BB the ST guru what does he value more?
Old faithful or a player who can potentially turn a punting situation to points?
I think if Nordin keeps this up you have to bank on the big Leg.
Now if Preseason games Nordin has a shank each game.
He’s not ready.
Would BB go into the season with 2 kickers?
Before we all say of course not this is the head coach who values special teams arguably more than any other head coach.

That kick looked like it would’ve been good from 70 plus, geez.
He had a great night but on that kick he kicked it from the 37. Ball was spotted on the 30. Look at the scoreboard and jumbotron. They headed the post wrong. But hearing how he kicked 70 might have been in play

I hope Nordin sticks we need youth at that position. Kickoffs should be fun with him

There is an impact on the cap, Folk’s $1.6 million would become dead money and count against the cap as would Nordin’s rookie deal which would be the net cap impact.

Usually, there’s offset language and Folk has an incentive to kick for another team to extend his career even though Folk would essentially be doing it for nothing. The Pats would get a credit in their 2022 cap for whatever he was paid by his new team which would most likely be the vet minimum.

Folk’s guarantee should not act as a disincentive to cut him and keep Nordin if they thought he was up to the job and too good to lose to waivers. Whatever is lost would be more than gained back by Nordin’s 2nd and 3rd year salaries being significantly less than what a veteran kicker would cost them for those two years.

Kid has a cannon for a leg. Jesus.
He certainly does and had a great night which is promising. As I noted on another post the heading on that post saying from 60 is wrong. He is kicking that from the 37 ball spotted on the 30. But he kicked a few sub 60 kicks so the cannon quote sticks
