Curran: NO WAY Pats go into season with just Cam and Stidham

Title needs to be corrected for proper context:

“Tom E. Curran: 'No way' Patriots go into season with just Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham”

Not exactly breaking news. It should be quite obvious to everyone that the Pats are looking to add a third QB to the picture, it’s just a matter of where they find that QB (draft, trade, post-cut signing).
Pats have gone with just 2 QBs many times when they liked them. If it's obvious that we'll have more than 2 then it means we're not convinced about them.

Oh definitely, but that was back when they had Brady. He was so dependable that they only needed him and one backup, plus whoever they had on the practice squad. Last year it was back to three, with Newton, Stidham, and Hoyer. At minimum they’re replacing Hoyer this year, and it won’t be Dolegala, who is just there to keep the seat warm.

The stark reality is that they're giving up on 2021 just like they did on 2020 if they don't get a real QB, either via draft or trade.

They are not a contender with Cam or Stidham.

Can you imagine a guy who makes laughably terrible decisions under pressure like Stidham facing that Bucs defense this season....the same defense that made Mahomes run for his life in the Super Bowl?

NC-17 hide your children!

Also Curran:

"Even if I took Mac Jones [at pick 15], which I'm not gonna do, I wouldn't be solving the quarterback problem," Curran said. "You know why? Because Mac Jones is already on the roster and he's been there for two years, it's Jarrett Stidham.

The Pats have a much better OL than what KC put out there for the most important game of the year.

Mahomes was running for his life because the battle of the trenches was a historic mismatch.

I agree that his durability is a huge cause for concern, but I don't think he is a middling QB when healthy. In San Francisco, Shanahan is 22-8 with Garoppolo and 7-27 without him.

This right here the key stat for why SF is going to draft a QB and Jimmy is basically done in SF. Can't rely on an injury prone guy (hello Wynn).

A rookie qb ain't winning in 2021

I can’t see coach trading away a future 1st round pick to move up. If that move craps out....

I am no Mac Jones fan at all, but that comparison is silly and lazy. Jones was much more accurate, clutch, and error-free than Stidham ever was. Physically they may be similar, but mechanics, footwork, and mental makeup edges go to Jones. That said, I prefer someone other than either Jones or Stidham under center.

JAG's greatness must be why that same Shanahan is looking to get rid of him...

This is Stidham under pressure.

Some of us want this guy to be the starter for the Patriots. :D I say nah.

So you never take a QB because they're unlikely to win a Super Bowl in year one? A rookie QB at least has the possibility of turning into The Man and giving the team a future.

Cam and Stid give you no hope at the position now OR IN THE FUTURE. They're not even short-term solutions, because they're not solutions, just dead ends.

Plus plenty of rookie QBs at least contributed more to the passing game than 2020 Cam did.

e: To be clear, the Pats don't have full control over who is available to take and/or who is willing to trade with you, but regardless the offseason is a fail if no new QB with actual potential is acquired in 2021.

I was just responding to your supposition that not drafting a QB was giving up on 2021, I did not say they should not draft somebody. I certainly agree that the QB position as it stands right now is a disaster. They need to do something to address it. But, it is likely that we will see a DT/LB/CB drafted or a trade down in the first...so be prepared!

This is a good draft for project/back-up QBs. Plenty of guys who have played a ton of college football and have some promise.

As I've said before, I don't think anyone outside of Lawrence is worth a first round pick.

Davis Mills, Stanford intrigues me.
Kellen Mond has play 4 years in the SEC and I would take him over Wilson or Lance anyday

you will have to take them in the 3rd rd.

Late round guys that might blosssom...

Jaime Newman, Wake Forest (transferred to GA but opted out)
Sam Ehlinger, Texas (won alot of games in college)
Felipe Franks, Arkansas (started at Florida, jumped around might shine with better coaching, he has a huge frame 6'6" 234 4.5 40, might be a TE conversion too)
K. J. Costello, Mississippi State (another one who jumped around different colleges, but at one time was considered a top recruit, good size 6'5" 225)
Ian Book, Notre Dame (short 6', but he is a multi year starter and is the winningest QB in ND history, that must mean something)
