DRAFT BGC 2021 Pre-Draft/Patriot-Type Prospect(s) thread

All the big shots are saying Jones. Shanahan is pushing all the chips in if he takes Jones. Trading up for a "safe", "high floor" pick isn't what you normally see using that much draft capital. I can't wait to see this play out. SF will give Mac everything he needs to succeed. Big-time storyline going into the season if it plays out that way.

How would Breer know whom the Scout's wanted? It's not like they would openly talk to him about who was on the board. Breer hasn't been on the "inside" of the Patriots for a long time..

Yea, not saying its true or not.. just stirred up frustrated feelings with the N'Keal pick lol

in fact knowing Breer, its likely he's just puking up nonsense to rile people up

really wanted AJ Brown (or ANY of the other 7 or so receivers).. i have very few criticisms of Belichick overall, but that and the Sanu trade are certainly among them

I kind of imagine it's Chicago or Washington. Chicago already tried to trade heavy assets to seattle. If the 49ers are picking Jones we could still land one of Fields/Lance between 5-8. I hope they pick Jones

I hope they pick Fields...What I would REALLY love to see is Fields going to the...J-E-T-E!

Fwiw I believe every teams board is a lot smaller than most of the fans/public think. I would be shocked if most weren't between 100-150, closer to 100-125. I just think New England's might be more to the extreme but who knows.

How many people have seen multiple big boards from us? Lots of speculation but I bet no team has hundreds of players on their board. Like us they'll cut down looking for their types.
Didn't Caserio say that they did a whole bunch of trading up on day 3 one year because they were "afraid of running out of draftable players"?

It was even worse than I thought in there...At least ownership has finally admitted publicly that there have been Way Too Many misses - including during the draft's first two days - than should be acceptable, especially when considering the reputation of the man making the Final Decisions...
My response to the Payton/Brees article is the Pats were winning championships while the Saints were having fun. Payton/Brees had many more losing seasons than BB/Brady

Many scouts have left the team to join other organizations. Maybe he’s hearing it directly from them. Obviously they’ll be self-serving (“oh no, I didn’t advocate for the bad guy who was picked, I wanted the good player but I was overruled!”) but that in and of itself doesn’t mean it’s not true. Could be, but not necessarily.

Frankly, the scouts leaving the organization part is the more concerning piece to me, and I can’t say I’m fully surprised. Belichick runs a tight ship and has his hierarchy, and it’s got to be tough to be working for someplace where you don’t think you’re valued. You’ve seen other teams war rooms on video — many have the entire scouting organization in there and it’s like Christmas for them, the culmination of their year of hard work. Whereas the Patriots have practically no one. I completely understand why BB does it that way — he wants to be planned and organized, ready for all contingencies, and doesn’t want last minute chaos as someone wants to reassess the rankings to pound for his pet project player while the team’s on clock — but it can foster exactly the type of ill feelings among the scouts that Breer is talking about. Especially when they can see how their peers are treated elsewhere. BB needs to find a middle ground where those guys can feel more appreciated and part of the process, while still preventing potential chaos in the draft room. They pay him the big bucks, he needs to figure out how to do that. Sounds like he’s trying, which is great to read.
Noted, but BB has always run a promote from within organization so those who do a good job get rewarded. It seems a lot of the Pats scouting staff leave for advanced positions, indicating a strong case for career development within the Pats organization.

I believe so although the actual quote escapes me.

Agreed on all parts here. Evaluating QB's or any position is incredibly difficult. Not easy at all. Pro or amateur scout, it doesn't matter. You're dealing with young prospects just starting out. Going into a new environment, being asked different and unfamiliar things.

@reamer @patsfanfromoversea @Mark Morse @long distance @Joker @KontradictioN @patfanken @One-If-By-Sea @borisman @Scotty @Uptown @upstater1 @Tony2046 @captain stone @DaBruinz @masterbouncer @JarOfMayo51 @State @ctpatsfan77 @Steve:Section 102

Apologies for the time but it was tough sorting through all the info. Last year I had one sheet with everything available. This year was a bit different, working off a few different sheets.

Anyway this is a decent representation of what a Patriots board would look like imo. I definitely plan on cutting some names. I want to be around 100. I'm around 120-130 now, I don't include on udfa prospects. It's said the Pats have a notoriously small board. Anywhere from 75-125 names. I have to think it changes every so often but again I'll try to get as close to 100 as possible. Updating it all the way until draft day.

How did I get here? Every team has a type. Whether its a DB's arm length, LB's 40 or OL 3 cone. Every team looks for certain things in different positions. Pats are no different.

I looked at height, weight, arm length, testing #'s for certain drills we favor for each position and then placed each prospect where I think their value is. This is the most subjective part of the process for sure. I have a good hit rate compared to the NFL, a little less so I feel good about where each prospect is in terms of value.

So I need a little help cutting down. Give me some suggestions. Someone not on there that should be? Let me know and I'll definitely consider it. This board is perfect amd I definitely make mistakes so please speak up. Fwiw there's a decent chance the prospect just didn't perform well in w/e drill we favor for that position.

I'll post this on the 1st page if anyone is looking and can't find this post. I should be done with me personal grades tonight/tomorrow so I'll post those as well when I'm done.

2021 PTP BOARD
I’d probably slot Elijah Moore in the first round. No argument on IOL. Where is Freirmuth in the TE group?

One other thing Kraft may have meant is the size of the Pats draft. It's been reported that it may be the smallest in the league and we've likely passed on players that turned out to be good players that possibly weren't even on the Pats board. The draft board needs to be expanded.
Well, this is a possibility. However, remember that every player added to "the board" is someone they feel has the potential to push someone off the roster. I think that reading the book that @BaconGrundleCandy linked will go a long way to helping people understand just what Belichick does when it comes to scouting and drafting players.

I hope they pick Fields...What I would REALLY love to see is Fields going to the...J-E-T-E!
Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it..

Fields is a much better QB than you give him credit for. And the Jetes do have a Coach in Saleh that I think is a very good coach. So there are more than a few chances of them NOT screwing this up..

BTW, you should be asking yourself why @BaconGrundleCandy has a 1st round PTP grade on Fields if he's "so bad" we'd wish him on the Jetes.

Anyone else wondering why he's comparing Slater (OT) to Marpet and Bitonio who are interior Linemen???
Some scouts view Slater as a better fit for the IOL. Arm length overall length look like a better fit there even tough he would be probably a good OT as well. Depends on the team probably and their scheme.

Something I've noticed over the years and just thought I'd throw out there: many people don't seem to account for the reflection when considering the potential of the draft picks.

For example: "This year's OL class is deep and really good!" and "This year's DL class is weak and not very good." Makes me go "hmm."

So if the DL class looks weak, is it because the OL class is so strong...or is it really and truly just weak (and therefore making the OL class look better than they actually will prove to be)?

And since, whatever the above question might reveal, we are left with a seemingly weak DL and edge rushing class, wouldn't that typically make QBs look better, with more time to throw?

Does a great receiving class seem greater because of a weak secondary class? Or vice-versa some years?

Ah well, just throwing that out there. Thank you for the board, Bacon...it makes mocking drafts way more fun and I greatly appreciate the work you've put into it.

BGC great job as usual ... Here are a few names I think you missed and need to be considered. Also some that need to be deleted. I agree on deleting a bunch of TE's. The only Day 3 TE I would consider is McKitty

Felton played strictly at WR in the Senior Bowl practices. The fact that White is only signed for one year makes me want to take Felton and his versatility to play both positions.

David Moore OG/OC Grambling - mean and tough, team captain and MVP. Dominated Senior Bowl practices and was voted OL practice player of the week for his team (Meinerz won for his team). He is a little short.

Robert Rochell CB Central Arkansas 6' 193. 11' BJ, 43" Vert, 4.4 40, 6.84 3 cone I think he checks all the boxes.

Subtractions
TuTu Atwell is too small
Landon ****erson only because of his injury history
Hunter Long is just not the Pats kind of player

I’d probably slot Elijah Moore in the first round. No argument on IOL. Where is Freirmuth in the TE group?
Freirmuth is more of a "my call" I guess lol.

Don't think he's that great of an athlete when I watch him, no real numbers to go either way but I see a slightly above average athlete. Not sure he would have hit the marks we like.

He'll go too early that makes sense for us imo. Don't see him as a big upgrade over Asiasi and again just don't see us taking a TE that early.
