That is more than likely the outcome.
Then you go into camp With Cam Jarrett and Jimmy and a rookie QB
Yeah, I do think they want Jimmy but if it doesn't happen they'll just trade up for a QB like Fields or Lance and move on. I guess that feeds into the "Jimmy = Plan A" stuff, as silly as that sounds. If they do get him, I'd think they go for a guy like Mond in the later rounds. Only question is if they keep Cam as Jimmy insurance if/when he gets hurt, or if they let him pursue a chance elsewhere and keep developing Stidham and a rookie. Don't know if the roster has room for 4 QBs...

IMO - Pats want Jimmy but are telling SF they won't wait around forever. SF doesn't want to pay him his big salary, but he has no incentive to restructure down because he knows they'll just cut him and he can sign where he wants. Their window to be able to get anything back for him is closing as the days pass. Hence - they are inquiring about Minshew who is starter level in case they can't get a QB they want in the draft. Send a 5th for Minshew, get a 2nd for Garoppolo, save $24M in cap. Maybe swap Gilmore for Jimmy - they need a corner, and without Jimmy they have the money to pay Gilmore what he wants.
I was with you until you went from they are getting desperate to let’s give them one of the best corners in the league.

I think this could very well be the scenario, but with caveat that the Patriots also aren't planning on it. I'll bet they have a plan if Jimmy is available, a plan if a kid they like in the draft falls to a spot they can trade to (and have already had preliminary discussions with teams in those spots), and a plan for if all of that falls through. Now they just wait and react to whatever circumstance becomes available.

Also, I don't think any of that is unique to the Patriots. All teams have these conversations and "what if" plans. Bill is pretty good at it, one of his strengths, but it's not exclusive to him by any stretch.

I understand that. Gilmore should be worth more, but his presumed desire for a new contract complicates things. Ideally, they trade a pick and keep Gilmore long-term.

I see a lot of posters are thinking we are going to trade for JG. How do we take on his salary with around $10 million left in cap space. If he gets cut I see us going for him. But a trade looks like it is out unless we trade a player with a high cap figure in return.

This Gilmore wants a new contract is speculation gone wild. People said wow his salary is 7 million, he isn’t going to like that and it took on a life of its own.
Doesnt necessarily mean it isn’t true but it is speculation.

Yeah I had that same argument earlier, I think in this thread. I also dislike the $7M salary-driven narrative. I think that the restructure he did last year kind of tells us he wants more money, but I don't think he's gonna sit out if it doesn't happen. It's certainly speculation, not set in stone.

Extension
Seems like it'd be simple enough to restructure with an extra year on the end (so a 3-year deal) with a signing bonus that gives him actual guaranteed money but spread out over those 3 years with a small '21 salary so his first year hit is small.

I think if San Fran had anywhere near the amount of interest in trading Jimmy G as you speculate, they would have jumped at the offers before now. I think they’ve decided to keep him as the best option they have and want a good backup (hence the interest in Mustache) who can start if Jimmy gets injured.

As long as we still draft a qb in the first round. Not willing to put the franchise in the hands of Injurjimmy G with newton waiting in the wings.

Probably correct, pending the draft

If they do they still have to go qb in round 1.
I fully agree
There is no way you make all these free agent moves and then draft a day 2 QB and have no bridge.

I predict we go up and get justin fields and he is starting by week 5.

We will have to get in the Top 5
We can’t wait another year to find a good young QB. I am not impressed with the Day 2 QB’s. They are going to need some time.
This rebuild cannot wait and be wasted. He is building to win now.
Go up and get him

I think Caserio might of been the issue after all.
Other than Chris Conley he has been shopping at yard sales in free agency
???

He had no choice, because of the team's cap/contracts/talent/draft picks situation. Caserio inherited a mess.

Also, the f#ck???? Is it really your position that every decision belichick has ever made has to be right or he isn’t the GOAT? Have you lost your mind?
